Abstract

Para mahasiswa dituntut untuk menyusun sebuah artikel ilmiah yang mereka refleksikan dalam sebuah publikasi. Keterampilan menulis dimunculkan melalui teori, dan fakta, serta mengkolaborasikan aspek-aspek tersebut mejadi sebuah gagasan ilmiah yang baik. Tantangan untuk meyusun artikel ilmiah membawa peluang bagi konsepsi pembelajaran secara mandiri (PLE). Penelitian ini membahas bagaimana keterlibatan mahasiswa dengan lingkungan belajarnya ketika mereka menyusun artikel ilmiah. Terdapat sembilan belas mahasiswa pascasarjana jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia sebagai peserta penelitian. Metode penelitian yang digunakan berupa observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara mendalam untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta didik memiliki keterlibatan yang kuat dalam penggunaan teknologi atau perangkat digital untuk mendukung pembelajaran penulisan artikel ilmiah. Namun, kebutuhan untuk memanfaatkan perangkat atau sumber offline juga menunjukkan angka yang signifikan. Implikasi dari penelitian ini ditujukan kepada dosen mata kuliah penulisan akademik sebagai refleksi pengajaran 2.0 dan peserta didik sebagai referensi dan pembelajaran di masa depan.

Abstract

Inspired by the unique of Ahmad (pseudonym), a young researcher who has successfully published his scholarly articles in international reputed journals regardless of his only holding a bachelor’s degree from a private university in East Java, this study aims to document his untold stories in writing for publication using narrative inquiry. Narrative inquiry informs the design of this investigation as the approach is particularly useful for understanding lived experiences. Findings of the current study show that through the past stories of Ahmad in his scholarly journey, he passed several events that had shaped his identity as a productive researcher with several published scholarly articles in reputable journals, namely: embarking on research world by attending academic workshops on publication, gaining good references based on interests and reading scholarly works related to them enthusiastically, finding research interests based on reading activities, preparing manuscripts, having mentorship with well-established researchers in his research interest, navigating targeted journals by browsing and reading the author’s submission guidelines and its scopes, submitting the research draft, negotiating the long revision processes. From those steps Ahmad went through in the past, reading references from reputable journals has been emphasized by him. Several issues confronted him during his journey such as difficulty in gaining access to credible references and less optimal guidance from his thesis supervisor due to her less scholarly reading activities. These barriers could be addressed by Ahmad through his virtual academic socialization with the experts of his research interest.

Abstract

The Community Service Program at the Miftahul Huda Islamic Boarding School (PPMH) in Doho Village, Dolopo District, Madiun Regency, is a solution to problems that occur in the community, especially among teenage students. Based on field observations and informal interviews conducted by the team with several students, they complained about their low motivation in speaking English. They feel a lack of confidence and their knowledge is still at a basic and immature level. Therefore, this activity is a program that will carry out mentoring training for the formation of an English Study Club to increase the motivation of PPMH Doho Dolopo Madiun students. Very basic things will be taught to them starting from providing basic training on small organizational management for students, increasing student motivation and abilities, fostering a collaborative and creative learning culture at the Islamic boarding school. The goal of this activity is to form an English Study Club as an English learning community. The implementation method is through direct training and mentoring to form the organizational structure of the English study club and run the organization properly. The results include improved soft skills competency, a more conducive learning environment, improved English language skills and motivation, particularly among students speaking English, and improved student managerial skills in running an English Study Club within the Islamic boarding school.
