Abstract

This research analyzed translation techniques used to translate adjective clauses found in the novel The Kite Runner, described the shifts of semantic categories in some of the translated clauses, and described the effects of the techniques used on the quality of the translated clauses. This study falls into the class of descriptive qualitative research. The main source of the data is the novel The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini and its Indonesian version. The secondary source of the data is the information given by raters and respondents through questionnaires given to them.  The result of this study shows that eleven translation techniques are used to translate 268 data analyzed in this research. In terms of semantic category, 55 data are believed to experience shifts in semantic categories. In general, 231 (86,1%) data are accurate, 35 (13%) data are less accurate, and 2 (0,74) data are inaccurate. In terms of the acceptability, 234 (87,3%) data are acceptable, 31(11,5%) data are less acceptable, and 3 (1,1%)data are unacceptable. Meanwhile, viewed from the level of readability, 226 (84,3%) data are highly readable, 40(14,9%) data moderately readable, and 2 (0,74%) data hardly readable.

Abstract

Lyrics and music have always been essential components of art, and their actual meaning can be discovered in the way sounds are arranged over time. The songs' deeper meanings and implications, however, may not be fully understood by many listeners. This thesis investigated the deeper meanings conveyed by figurative language in Jason Mraz's album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride. The idea was to demonstrate that, in addition to simply appreciating the music, listeners may discover topics like love and life's journey. The songs gained depth and a personal touch from the use of figurative language, which uses literary devices to suggest meanings beyond the literal. In order to determine which figurative language forms were most prevalent in Mraz's lyrics, this study identified a variety of them. A qualitative method was applied, Classifying the data according to Perrine's (1977) theory, analyzing the data, going over the lyrics and their interpretations, and making conclusions are the four processes that follow. Numerous figurative language types, including similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, metonymy, understatement, and irony, were found in the songs, with metaphors being the most prevalent. Abstract

This study investigates the semiotic meaning in which emojis are used in the comment section of Nas Daily's Instagram posts, an Israeli-Palestinian social media influencer. This study employs Saussure's (1959) theory of semiotics i.e., signifier and signified relationship and Evans's (2017) linguistic theory of emojis, discussing their affective and contextual roles in online communication. A qualitative descriptive design was followed, and data were collected from screenshots of emojis in comments on the Instagram post by Nas Daily on November 26, 2024, about the Nas Scholarship. Data analysis applied Spradley's (1980) four-stage model: Domain Analysis, Taxonomic Analysis, Componential Analysis, and Cultural Theme Analysis. Results show that emojis serve certain communicative functions, where the most frequent functions are Substitution and Reinforcement. The most commonly used emoji sets are People, Symbols, and Smileys. These allow individuals to express emotions, emphasize their messages, or even replace words themselves. The study finds that Instagram users typically use emojis to summarize and reinforce their messages, especially in favorable and supportive settings such as in Nas Daily's comments. Semiotically, emojis are unveiled to be endowed with rich meaning and potent visual means of communication, and using them contributes to social relationships' formation in virtual environments.
