Abstract

The use of corpus methods that combines both quantitative and qualitative aspects has benefited the field of discourse analysis. It is a corpus-assisted discourse study. The study focuses on the ways the writers of online reviews of tourist attractions in TripAdvisor website interact and how they position themselves and the readers. The study employed Lextutor online to get the keywords and Antconc to find the collocations and scrutinize the concordance lines. In the interaction, the writers evaluated the tourist attractions, gave advice and instructions, recounted, reported what the others said, thanked, and encouraged the readers to imagine. The writers tried to provide the information as much as possible and put themselves as the ones that have wider knowledge than the readers. They did it to help the readers make the right decision and anticipate particular conditions. A particular language structure such as prepositional phrases becomes the salient features of this text type.

Abstract

This study analyzes discourse marker (DM) kok (why) in colloquial Jakartan Indonesian. Co-occurences of markers are noticeable features. It focuses on examining the emotive and textual functions of the co-occurences of kok and other markers. This study applied corpus methods. It was found that there are 7 markers co-occur with kok namely lho, eh, oh, lha, wah, ah, and ih that always appear on the left side of kok. Only DM sih occurs on the right side. In emotive functions, the co-occurrences were used to show shock, disappointment, and disgust. Three markers might occur together in one utterance which cause more complex senses. Some utterances with kok appear repeatedly in the form of questions. It seems that in questions with kok, the speakers feel more curious and demand more responses. In textual functions, the speakers use the co-occurrences to raise a topic, emphasize, demand answers, and negotiate. Moreover, it was also used when the speakers have just noticed something and tried to make the interlocutors notice.

Abstract

Discourse marker sih is a common feature of questions in colloquial Indonesian.  The results of previous research show a contrast function of sihs in questions. The questions in which sihs occur are called marked questions. The present study explored the functions of sihs by contrasting marked and unmarked questions produced by the same speakers. The marked questions can occur before the unmarked questions or in reverse order. In both patterns, the marked questions indicate speakers’ great willingness to know. They also show speakers’ way to attract hearers’ attention. The unmarked questions were used when the speakers elicit more accurate and precious answers. Moreover, they were uttered when the hearers do not catch the idea mentioned in the first question. They were uttered because the hearers’ ask for repetition.

Abstract

This research explored the most frequent types of phrasal verbs, the 10-most-frequent phrasal verbs used, and the 5-most-frequent simple verbs used to build phrasal verbs on Twitter accounts. This study used qualitative research to collect qualitative data and used analytical techniques. The data were taken from the tweets of Barack Obama and Katy Perry. After collected the types of phrasal, phrasal, and simple verbs, the data were analyzed by categorizing them. After that, the frequency were calculated and converted to a percentage. The researcher examined as many as 379 tweets from both accounts. The frequency of types of phrasal verbs are idiomatic meaning (73%) and literal meaning (27%). The 10-most-frequent phrasal verbs are tune in, look at, get to, look forward to, sign up, reflect on, catch up, come up, check out, and live in. The 5-most-frequent simple verbs are look, tune, get, come, and live. The implications of this research can be used to prepare teaching materials about phrasal verbs. High-frequency phrasal verbs such as tune in, look at, get to can be included in teaching materials. After that, the teacher can explain types of phrasal verbs, namely literal and idiomatic meanings, and gives examples, so students understand this material.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi berdampak pada semua aspek kehidupan termasuk pendidikan bahasa. Dengan adanya perkembangan teknologi, korpus bahasa muncul. Korpus memanfaatkan teknologi komputer dan internet. Bentuk kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah pelatihan pemanfaatan korpus untuk guru bahasa Inggris di SMA. Kegiatan ini dilakukan untuk memperkenalkan kumpulan teks yang dikenal dengan nama korpus. Seiring dengan perkembangan jaman, teknologi yang memadai digunakan untuk menyiapkan pembelajaran yang lebih baik. Dengan berbasiskan kumpulan teks yang sangat besar, korpus dapat memberikan informasi bahasa mulai dari tingkatan kata sampai dengan diskursus. Investigasi kolokasi dan baris konkordansi merupakan fungsi dasar korpus yang dipelajari dalam pelatihan ini. Dengan menguasai hal ini, guru bahasa Inggris akan mampu mengamati berbagai aspek dalam teks seperti tata bahasa, tindak tutur, dan manajemen informasi. Penguasaan aspek tersebut dapat membuat guru mengembangkan rencana pembelajaran dan evaluasi teks karya siswa dengan lebih baik. Dalam pelatihan ini, guru menyadari manfaat yang bisa diberikan oleh korpus. Selain itu, mereka juga berpartisipasi aktif dalam pelatihan. Kata kunci : korpus; pembelajaran bahasa

Abstract

Berdasarkan informasi dari ketua MGMP Bahasa Inggris wilayah I Jakarta Timur, guru-guru MGMP Bahasa Inggris memerlukan pengembangan diri untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme mereka sebagai guru. Salah satu topik yang dibutuhkan adalah bagaimana menilai kemampuan berpikir kritis yang diintegrasikan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Solusi yang ditawarkan adalah pelatihan  untuk menilai kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa SMA dengan menggunakan rubrik SOLO taksonomi. Pelatihan dilakukan secara daring    dengan menggunakan Google Meet dan menyelesaikan tugas secara berkesinambungan sehingga diharapkan kompetensi guru meningkat yang berdampak pada pengembangan profesionalisme guru. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan bervariasi yaitu pemaparan, demonstrasi, diskusi dan presentasi. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru dalam menilai berpikir kritis siswa yang diintegrasikan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas dengan menggunakan SOLO taksonomi sebagai salah satu rubrik penilaian. Kata   kunci:  berpikir kritis, rubrik SOLO taksonomi, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris

Abstract

This research analyzed idiomatic expressions in speech videos on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel. This study used descriptive linguistics to collect qualitative data and used analytical techniques. The data were taken from nine speech videos from TEDx Talks YouTube channel, after collected the idiomatic expressions, the data were categorized using two theories: Biber’s (1999) and Ernst’s (1981) theories. This study found 54 kinds of structural units of idiomatic expressions with the most dominant were prepositional phrase idioms with total 21 idioms, followed by selected verb + noun phrase idioms with total 14 idioms, next selected verb + prepositional phrase idioms with total 13 idioms, and lastly noun phrase idioms with total 6 idioms. This study also found 11 idiom modifications, and internal modifications were the most appeared with total 5 idioms, followed by external modifications with total 4 idioms, and lastly conjunction modification with total 2 idioms. The implications of this research can be used in teaching and learning for EFL/ESL.

Abstract

Sekolah dapat berperan aktif melalui gerakan literasi kesehatan yang diintegrasikan dengan Penjaringan Kesehatan Remaja (PKR) untuk menciptakan masyarakat yang sehat. Sayangnya, kegiatan PKR belum berjalan secara optimal karena pencatatan masih menggunakan buku cetak, sehingga sulit untuk mengolah data yang ada. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan literasi kesehatan digital di SMA Sejahtera 1 Depok melalui pelatihan menulis refleksi di e-Rapor Sehatku. Peserta mengevaluasi kondisi kesehatan mereka dan menuliskan tindak lanjut berupa perbaikan pola hidup dan pola makan. Kegiatan ini meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kesadaran peserta terhadap literasi kesehatan. Berdasarkan hasil pre-test dan post-test, terjadi peningkatan sebesar 26,88%. Dengan menulis refleksi, komunitas sekolah menjadi lebih aktif dalam mengambil langkah nyata untuk menjaga dan memantau kesehatan mereka. Menulis refleksi juga mempersiapkan komunitas sekolah untuk menerapkan ilmu kesehatan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Masalah kesehatan remaja di Indonesia menunjukkan adanya tren yang meningkat dan perlu menjadi pusat perhatian. Salah satu upaya mengurangi masalah kesehatan pada remaja adalah dengan adanya penjaringan kesehatan di sekolah, tetapi sayangnya kegiatan itu belum banyak berhasil dilakukan secara efektif dan berkala. Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah peningkatan pengetahuan dan sikap terkait penjaringan kesehatan remaja di SMA Sejahtera 1 Depok, dengan sasaran Tim Penjaringan Kesehatan Remaja (PKR). Metode yang digunakan pada kegiatan ini adalah Community Development. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berhasil meningkatkan pengetahuan sebanyak 12 poin dan sikap sebanyak 8 poin terkait penjaringan kesehatan beserta pentingnya program kesehatan di sekolah. Diharapkan dengan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan sikap, Tim PKR mampu menjadi penggerak dalam mengimplementasikan penjaringan kesehatan di sekolah secara aktif dan berkala.

Abstract

The present study explores the interactions of adults and children where the adults question children’s disclaim of knowledge in Colloquial Jakartan Indonesian (CJI). It reveals how children display their disclaims and deal with the issues of epistemic responsibility. The source of the data is Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES) corpus. The lexical patterns of various interactions were observed.  The data was analyzed based on some theories of epistemics as stated by Heritage (2012). Lexical items to depict adults’ disbeliefs of children’s disclaims were found in the questions. Such questions appeared because the adults believed the children had epistemic access to the requested knowledge. Some children finally provided relevant knowledge after they were reminded of their epistemic statuses. Disclaims of knowledge were still found even though some questions to elicit the responses had been given. They even ended the discussion on the topic and switched to another topic. They connected their disclaims of knowledge with the state of not remembering. It shows they understood the states of not knowing and not remembering functions to indicate their inability to provide knowledge. Thus, they used the disclaims to manage the talk and show their authority.
