Abstract

Abstract

The present study explores the interactions of adults and children where the adults question children’s disclaim of knowledge in Colloquial Jakartan Indonesian (CJI). It reveals how children display their disclaims and deal with the issues of epistemic responsibility. The source of the data is Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES) corpus. The lexical patterns of various interactions were observed.  The data was analyzed based on some theories of epistemics as stated by Heritage (2012). Lexical items to depict adults’ disbeliefs of children’s disclaims were found in the questions. Such questions appeared because the adults believed the children had epistemic access to the requested knowledge. Some children finally provided relevant knowledge after they were reminded of their epistemic statuses. Disclaims of knowledge were still found even though some questions to elicit the responses had been given. They even ended the discussion on the topic and switched to another topic. They connected their disclaims of knowledge with the state of not remembering. It shows they understood the states of not knowing and not remembering functions to indicate their inability to provide knowledge. Thus, they used the disclaims to manage the talk and show their authority.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how negative politeness strategies are represented in language use, particularly through dialogue in educational resources, such as English textbooks for junior high school students. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis to analyze and describe the collected data. The researchers adapted the politeness theoretical framework developed by Brown and Levinson (1987), focusing on the representation of negative politeness that emerged in the English textbook entitled “An Analysis of Negative Politeness Strategies in an English Textbook” published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The findings indicate that there are five sub-strategies realized in the textbook. They are question and hedge, be conventionally indirect, give deference, minimize the imposition, and be pessimistic. The dominant sub-strategy found was conventionally indirect. A strategy of negative politeness in which the speaker conveys a request or intention indirectly, usually through expressions that contain meanings beyond their literal meaning. This strategy aims to mitigate the potential for face-threatening actions, such as requests or orders, by employing socially acceptable forms of polite expression. Abstract

This study examined the occurrences of expressions of disagreement in the textbook and corpora namely Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and British National Corpus (BNC). Besides, this study scrutinized the concordance lines in which disagreement occur to obtain other language functions that were usually used together in expressions of disagreement. It also studied the used of adverbs in expressions of disagreement. They were categorized based on semantic categories develop by Biber, et al. (1999). Some expressions of disagreement given in the textbook were not found in BNC. The findings from the corpora showed that the speakers tend to give opinions and reasons in stating disagreement. They, moreover, showed direct respect to the interlocutors in order to manage the relationship. These language functions were not found in the expressions of disagreement in the textbook. The adverbs that belonged to the categories of degree and stance were more salient than any other categories. The adverbs intensified the level of disagreement and represent speakers’ certainty. Furthermore, the adverbs indicate speakers’ attitude toward the issues of disagreement. It seemed that adverbs played a role in stating disagreement.

Abstract

The importance of investigating novice English teachers' experiences cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges they encounter during their initial years of teaching. Past observations have highlighted support as a key strategy for overcoming the difficulties faced by novice English teachers. This study focuses on novice English teachers at a primary school and a language training center in Jakarta Barat area, selected based on their teaching experience of fewer than five years. The main objectives of this study are to identify the challenges they confronted and examine the support they received. The researcher employed reflective journals and interviews to collect information about various difficulties faced by novice English teachers. These challenges encompass aspects of student behavior, foreign language learning and teaching (the lack of learner proficiency in English, insufficient learner motivation and interest, and student parents’ expectations), a large number of students, and other challenges (self-condition, colleague-related, and students' school equipment). Additionally, the study indicates that novice English teachers do receive support during their early teaching years from co-workers, perceived efficacy, and school policy.
