Abstract

The interest of teaching English to young learners increased rapidly since the language has significant influence in the modern world. English is strongly associated with social and economic power in globalization’s context. Introducing English earlier offers opportunities to awaken the learners’ enthusiasm and curiosity about the language, to achieve native-like accent, and to enable them to learn the language easily at further levels. However, there are controversies, particularly, about the age to start learning a new language. In Indonesia, English roles as a foreign language and the government have set up the policy to introduce English to students at elementary school. In order to support the language learning, parent involvement is extremely important to help the children learn and acquire the language. This study explores parents’ perspectives toward English language teaching to young learners and further looks at their involvement in supporting their children learning the foreign language at home. An in-depth interview was conducted to parents with different educational backgrounds, professions, incomes, and gender groups in Langsa, Aceh province, Indonesia. Result revealed that parents have very positive attitude towards the language teaching to young learners. They enthusiastically support their children by helping them doing assignments, memorizing the vocabulary, providing learning medias such as English books, vocabulary pictures, English cartoon’s films, puzzles, and asking teachers the topic they do not understand from their children’s textbook. Lower education and lower income parents showed more enthusiasm in supporting their children.

Abstract

The introduction of English to young learners at an earlier age in foreign language settings has led to recognition of the importance of actively involving pupils in learning the target language. This study aimed to describe the utilization of poetry as an instructional tool to expose English as a foreign language to young learners. It further elaborates how its use could enhance and encourage active participation of the learners during the learning. This qualitative study was conducted at an elementary school in Langsa, a region in Aceh. A total of 25 pupils were purposefully selected as participants in this research. The data were collected through observation and interviews. The findings showed that incorporating poetry effectively stimulates learners’ engagement during the learning process. Students demonstrate enthusiasm and active participation in the classroom activity, as poetry's rhythmic, expressive, and musical elements prevent monotony in their learning experience. Learners demonstrate a favorable disposition towards acquiring English language skills through poetry, as seen by their active engagement in various classroom activities, including generating poetic content, vocalizing poems enthusiastically, and employing non-verbal communication to convey the intended meaning during recitation effectively. They were also exposed to the learning of vocabulary and pronunciation in an engaging way through the poem.

Abstract

Linguistic issues such as interference and integration frequently arise in multilingual environment, which frequently result in barriers to second language production. This study examines at how language interaction between Acehnese and Indonesian has affected the Indonesian language in Langsa, with a particular emphasis on consonant variations and interference. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of phonological interference on Acehnese speakers when speaking the Indonesian language, with a specific focus on observing variations in consonant sounds using auditory means.  The study conducted a detailed examination of common variances in Indonesian pronunciation among Acehnese speakers.  This qualitative research was carried out in Langsa, Aceh Province, involving  40 individuals who are native speakers of Acehnese. The participants consisted of 20 males and 20 females, encompassing a range of ages.  The collected data was evaluated using the PRAAT software.  The findings revealed that there was interference in pronunciation, particularly in the form of devoicing, which is the absence of vowel resonance. This was observed in the words "[ap. di]" and "[ʤa.wap]."  This interference leads to a significant level of devoicing, reaching 90% and 100% respectively.  Furthermore, the study revealed phonological interference in words such as "[thə.linga]", "[tə.thap]", and "[a.hat]", with speakers demonstrating devoicing rates of 40%, 40%, and 100% respectively.  The findings showed the complex nature of phonological interference in the pronunciation of the Indonesian language by Acehnese speakers.  These findings served as a foundation for the development of more effective strategies for acquiring a second language, particularly in diglossic environments like Indonesia.

Abstract

This study elaborates the perspectives of teachers and primary school students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) regarding the application of the shadowing technique for pronunciation. Scholars have acknowledged shadowing as an effective technique for improving learners' pronunciation, where pupils replicate speech as carefully and promptly as possible following a speaker. This qualitative study was carried out at MIN 2 Langsa throughout the academic year of 2022-2023. Subject of the research was an English teacher and 30 fifth-grade pupils selected purposively. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with an EFL teacher and focus group discussions with the primary school students, followed by classroom observations to provide a deeper comprehension of the actual use of the method. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key patterns and themes in participants' responses. Results revealed that teacher considered the technique effective for enhancing students' speech accuracy, rhythm, and intonation. It offers students an immediate opportunity to correct their pronunciation and actively involves them in learning English, particularly in terms of pronunciation. The learners primarily viewed shadowing activity as an enjoyable exercise, where they practiced English chorally. This technique fosters students' confidence in the English classroom by alleviating individual pressure, while all participants learn and practice English together. Thus, it can be a powerful tool for enhancing young learners’ pronunciation in an engaging way. English teachers might employ the technique as an alternative strategy to engage young learners in foreign language acquisition, particularly in pronunciation.
