Abstract

Corrosion is one of the primary causes of failure in ship piping systems, particularly on butterfly valves, which play a critical role in the loading and discharging operations of liquid cargo. This study aims to analyze the causes of corrosion on butterfly valves and its impact on the operational performance of the cargo discharge system aboard the MT.Adria. dopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through field observations, interviews with crew members, and documentation. The findings show that valve damage is caused by a combination of harsh marine environmental conditions, inappropriate material selection that leads to galvanic corrosion, and inadequate maintenance procedures. This corrosion results in valve malfunction, system leakage, and delays in cargo discharge operations. Using a fishbone diagram analysis, the study identifies three main contributing factors: valve material, operational environment, and inspection and maintenance practices. The findings highlight that a small component failure, such as a valve, can significantly affect the overall efficiency and safety of ship operations. The study recommends implementing risk-based preventive maintenance, selecting corrosion-resistant valve materials suitable for marine environments, and conducting routine inspections to enhance the reliability of the cargo discharge system on tankers.

Abstract

Sarli Armada Divia, 2026 “Analysis of the Use of the Inert Gas System in the Discharge Process of Gasoline RON 92 on MT. SC ESTEEM LII.” Supervised by Mr. Bayu Yudho Baskoro, S.S.T.Pel., M.Tr.T and Mr. M. Kurniawan, M.Pd.I. His study aims to analyze the use of the Inert Gas System (IGS) in improving work safety and preventing fire and explosion risks during the discharge of Gasoline RON 92 on MT. SC ESTEEM LII. Gasoline is a highly volatile and flammable cargo that can form explosive mixtures when combined with oxygen, making INERT GAS SYSTEM (IGS) essential to reduce oxygen levels and maintain positive tank pressure. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method through direct observation, crew interviews, and documentation, with analysis based on ISGOTT standards. The results show that the INERT GAS SYSTEM (IGS) is effective in reducing oxygen levels and preventing air ingress into the tanks. However, its effectiveness is influenced by human factors and equipment conditions. Therefore, routine maintenance, continuous training, and optimal supervision are necessary to ensure safe ship operations.

Abstract

This study analyzes the selection of shipping routes on MV Spob Seroja III to improve time efficiency and sailing safety amid increasing competition in the shipping industry. The research applies a triangulation method by collecting data from various sources, methods, and timeframes. The results show that route selection is carried out through three main stages: route identification, navigation planning, and safety planning. Careful and up-to-date planning based on publications and weather conditions is essential to ensure safe and efficient voyages.
