Abstract

This study looked at the listening strategies introduced The object of the study was seven classes of English for Adults (EA) of various levels at LBPP-LIA Kalimalang, Jakarta. The sources of data comprised the activities in the classrooms during a listening session which included the spoken exchanges between all participants (students and the teachers). Data collection consisted of audio recording of the spoken exchanges and note taking of all observed activities during the listening session. The analysis on the listening strategies introduced in the seven observed classes was carried out using Vandergrift‘s (Flowerdew and Miller: 2005) classification of listening strategies. It was found that the dominance of listening strategy used was Double-Check Monitoring (33.98%). It was followed by Direct Attention, Selective Attention, and Extralinguistic Inferencing as the second most frequently introduced (11.65%). Cooperation was the third (9.7%). The fourth was Self-Management and Auditory Monitoring (5.83%) respectively. Linguistic Inferencing and Inferencing between Parts took the fifth (1.94%).The least introduced listening strategies were Creative Elaboration and Summarization (0.97%) for each. In other words, the percentage of Vandergrift‘s listening strategy which are classified into Metacognitive, Cognitive and Socioaffective strategies were 86.94%, 21.35% and 9.7% respectively. The observed strategies were introduced by the teachers to get immediate feedback on the students‘ comprehension, to help the students understand the listening materials, and to motivate the students to listen. The teachers seemed to be aware that to introduce listening strategies was necessary to facilitate the students‘ listening to achieve comprehension. However, the ways the teachers introduced the listening strategies could have been more varied in order to maintain the students‘ interest and participation.

Abstract

Improving listening skills is one of urgent problems in education. Insufficiency of students? linguistics and non-linguistics knowledge or background knowledge to comprehend ideas during listening could be solved by providing them with interactive tasks since to learn to listen is to learn to respond and to continue a chain of listening and responding. This study aims to uncover interactive teaching in a listening session at LBPP-LIA Kalimalang Jakarta. The subjects of the study were the students of Intermediate 3 together with their teacher. The object of the study were the aspects covered by classroom interaction: student-student and student-teacher interactions. Data collection consisted of audio-recording of the spoken exchange and note taking of all observed activities during the listening session.  As a qualitative study, the findings were described in terms of words. The result showed the teacher seemed to be aware that interactive tasks in pair/group work would benefit the students. The interaction patterns taken place among participants involved in a discussion reflected an interactive teaching. However, the teacher should have developed his roles. He needed to vary his techniques in maintaining the interaction, therefore, the students were motivated to volunteer information, comment, or questions.

Abstract

To have insight of the students learning style is vital since it can facilitate teacher to teach and decide what methods as well as activities are appropriate for the students, for instance,  in learning English. For the students in the future, it is hoped that they can recognize their own learning style preferences in order to be able to learn successfuly, because the students themselves may have no ideas of learning styles they prefer. They just imitate what their friends do, and the teacher does not understand what the students are like and what they prefer in learning. As the consequence, it will not result in any good effect for the improvement for their successful teaching and learning. Hence, both teacher and students, particularly the teachers need to know the students’ characteristics and their learning style preferances. This study adapted the Style Analysis Survey (SAS) model proposed by Oxford (1995) concerning the the student learning style preferences. The samples of this quantitative study involved 60 students who consisted of 30 of non-English and 30 English students at UNPAM. The data taken from quetionnaire were analyzed by using SPSS into descriptive statistic. It was found that the student learning style preferences of both non-English and English students mostly fell on the Social and affective. Meanwhile, for the individual learning style preferences of each group of students are  Physiological and Cognitive executive (II) in which non-English students will remember things better if they discuss them, and English students prefer realism instead of new, unstested ideas.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify and interpret both verbal and non-verbal signs within various advertisements, exploring their denotative and connotative meanings. This study employed a qualitative approach to analyze 40 fast-food advertisements from five globally recognized brands: Subway, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonald's. Data collection involved identifying advertisements, reading the text, downloading images, and underlining key words, sentences, and phrases. The data were analyzed by: (1) categorizing the signs in the advertisements into two types—verbal and non-verbal; (2) analyzing the denotative and connotative meanings of these signs using theories from Barthes (1977) and Luzar & Monica (2011); and (3) drawing conclusions based on the identified denotative and connotative meanings. The selection of Barthes’ theory was aligned with the study's objective. The findings revealed a rich tapestry of signs employed to attract attention, convey messages, and persuade consumers. The results indicated the presence of 91 verbal signs, including slogans, product names, notices, and the use of capital letters, and 90 non-verbal signs, such as logos, colors, illustrations, and human imagery, within the advertisements.

Abstract

In the era of digital globalization, online discourse often becomes a battleground of competing ideologies, emotions, and linguistic behaviors, particularly on platforms like Twitter, now known as X. This study explores the intersection of impoliteness strategies and annotated translation techniques by analyzing forty selected user comments responding to Bloomberg’s posts about the 2022 G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia. These comments, perceived as inappropriate or impolite, reflect not only socio-political tensions but also the complex challenges of preserving communicative intent in translation. Employing a qualitative design grounded in Culpeper’s impoliteness framework and Molina and Albir’s taxonomy of translation techniques, the study identifies three dominant impoliteness purposes: entertainment (57.5%), affective (32.5%), and coercive (10%), alongside five translation techniques including compensation, variation, modulation, literal, and transposition. A key finding reveals that the translation techniques used did not always align directly with the original communicative purpose, highlighting the translator’s interpretive agency. This research addresses a significant gap in translation studies by focusing on the nuanced function of impolite language in digital public discourse and how translation reshapes or mediates its effect. By situating translation within the dynamics of sociocultural offense and affective expression, the study contributes to a richer understanding of pragmatics in multilingual media contexts. It provides practical implications for translation practitioners, educators, and discourse analysts concerned with linguistic fidelity, cultural sensitivity, and communicative efficacy in cross-cultural digital environments.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the vocabulary of eighth-grade students by using movies as a medium in learning at SMP Al-Ma’mur. By employing a simple experimental study design, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data, this study explored the impact of movie-based vocabulary instruction. Data collection involved pre-tests, post-tests, and some student interviews. The participants were 15 junior high school students in grade 8 that were given some pre and posttests together with the interview for some both qualitative and quantitative data findings. Some data quantitative were calculated in order to find some significant improvement. While some data qualitative were interpreted based on some theories adopted. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement for the students' vocabulary scores in which the maximum pretest score was < 50 that indicated under the minimum passing score (KKM) /75. While the posttest score was 100 maximums complemented by overwhelmingly positive qualitative feedback regarding the students’ learning experience. The study concludes that utilizing movie as an instructional tool in language classrooms creates a more dynamic and motivating learning environment, thereby promoting effective language acquisition.

Abstract

Reduplication consists of many forms in which each form has a tendency to create error effecting the meanings. The absence of knowledge to construct words appropriately creates difficulties since not all words are readily constructed for word reduplication. Less studies on topic applied were conducted. Therefore, this study is worth doing. The paper aims to describe and to compare the morphological reduplication in both Tagalog and Indonesian Language (Bahasa). This research was a qualitative methods. Qualitative research is a methods used to conduct and to interpret data in accordance with strategies such as collecting, analyzing, and concluding (Hamied, 2017). The data were analyzed by listing and comparing form and meaning of words after they were reduplicated. The findings show that the reduplication in both languages similarities and differences lie in terms of changes of tenses, class, another meaning, and quantity. Both partial and full reduplications were also found in terms of their similarities and differences. Partial reduplication on the words in the morphological reduplication altered two components namely word formation and the word meaning which lied in the changes of tenses which was the most common reduplication in Tagalog language. Meanwhile in Bahasa was the reduplication which referred to quantity. Full reduplication changing took place in the term of words with affix [ka] indicates the changes of meaning and the form as well. In the case of reduplication taken place on Bahasa, it was found that Bahasa had the tendency to have different meanings.
