Abstract

Background: A wound is a disorder of the continuity of the epithelial layer of the skin or mucosa and can result from physical or thermal damage. Proliferation and remodeling processes are important phases in incision wound healing. Celery is believed to have the potential to regulate the inflammatory phase and accelerate the process of proliferation and remodeling of wound tissue. This study aims to evaluate the potency of celery extract (Apium graveolens (Linn)) on incision wound healing in vivo. Methods: This study was an in vivo experimental study. A total of 24 rats were used in this study and divided into 4 treatment groups (2 control and 2 treatment groups). Analysis of epithelial thickness ratio and epithelial length was performed using SPSS using univariate and bivariate. Results: The control group had the lowest epithelial thickness ratio, followed by 50% extract, 75% extract, and finally, the gentamicin group. The length of newly formed epithelium in wounds treated with Apium graveolens (Linn) extract group 70% (mean 1.461 mm) was similar to that treated with gentamicin 0.1% (mean 1.457 mm) and much better than those treated without extract (0.869 mm). Conclusion: Celery extract (Apium graveolens (Linn)) has the potential to accelerate the process of reepithelialization of incision wounds in vivo studies.

Abstract

Background: Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) are postoperative infections categorized into superficial, deep, and organ/ space infections, mostly caused by endogenous bacteria. Silver sulfadiazine as topical antimicrobial are widely used, though its effectiveness in SSIs remains unproven. Current research focuses on its impact on lymphocyte and collagen levels in animal models to better understand its role in SSI management. Objective:  This study aimed to verify the use of silver sulfadiazine in Sprague Dawley rat models in improving healing process of SSIs. Methods: The study used a post-test only control group design to evaluate wound treatments on infected wound in rats. Thirty rats were divided into three groups: negative control (0.9% NaCl), positive control (0.9% NaCl + gentamicin), and treatment (0.9% NaCl + silver sulfadiazine). Standard wounds were treated accordingly and on day 14, tissue samples were analyzed for fibroblasts, neutrophils, macrophages, collagen, and wound diameter. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis for significant differences (p < 0.05). Results:  Study showed treatment group had significantly higher fibroblast (p = 0.04), neutrophil (p = 0.00), and macrophage counts (p = 0.00), as well as collagen levels (p = 0.00), compared to both positive and negative control group. Wound size in treatment group was also significantly smaller. Conclusion: Silver sulfadiazine significant reduced fibroblast, neutrophil, macrophage, and collagen counts, as well as wound size.
