Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that requires long-term adherence to treatment. One of the main challenges in managing type 2 DM is the low level of patient adherence to medication. This literature review aims to analyze the effect of health education on improving patients’ knowledge and medication adherence. The review is based on selected scientific articles that discuss the relationship between education, knowledge, and adherence in patients with DM. Findings indicate that health education-delivered through counseling, printed media, self-instructional modules, or home visits—generally improves patients’ understanding of the disease and the importance of regular treatment. This increase in knowledge contributes to better health behavior, particularly in terms of medication compliance. Interactive educational methods that involve healthcare providers and patient families are more effective than one-way communication approaches. Structured and continuous education tailored to patient characteristics has the potential to significantly enhance disease management. Therefore, health education should be prioritized as a key strategy to improve treatment adherence and prevent long-term complications in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

The standard of pharmaceutical services serves as a benchmark, especially for pharmacists, in providing pharmaceutical care. This study aims to examine the impact of pharmacists' presence on pharmaceutical services. The research uses a cross-sectional method with a questionnaire as the measurement tool, conducted from April to May 2023. The study sample consists of 31 respondents who are pharmaceutical personnel in pharmacies in Rokan Hulu Regency. The results show that the percentage of pharmacist presence in pharmacies in Rokan Hulu Regency is only 43.46%, which is still considered low. A simple linear regression analysis indicates that the coefficient value of pharmacist presence is 53.310. The linear regression coefficient for Rokan Hulu Regency is 0.404. Based on the coefficient of determination test, the pharmacist presence variable (X) has a high influence on the quality of pharmaceutical services (Y), with a contribution of 79%. The F-test results show a value of 18.769 with a significance level of 0.007 (p<0.05), concluding that the pharmacist presence variable significantly affects pharmaceutical services. Moreover, pharmacist presence contributes to improving key service aspects, such as pharmaceutical supply management, drug information services, and patient counseling. Therefore, efforts to increase pharmacist presence in pharmacies are necessary to ensure pharmaceutical services are more optimal and comply with established standards.

Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting reproductive-age women and is closely associated with metabolic disturbances such as overweight and insulin resistance. More than 50% of women with PCOS are overweight, which exacerbates ovulatory dysfunction and increases androgen levels. Insulin resistance, found in approximately 50% of PCOS patients—even those with normal body weight—triggers hyperinsulinemia that stimulates androgen production and suppresses ovulation. This study aims to analyze the contribution of overweight and insulin resistance to the development of PCOS through a literature review approach. Scientific articles were retrieved from databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar, focusing on publications from the last five years. The findings indicate that overweight and insulin resistance mutually reinforce hormonal and ovulatory dysfunction typical in PCOS patients. Recent studies show that higher body mass index (BMI) and elevated HOMA-IR levels are strongly associated with menstrual irregularities, hyperandrogenism, and reduced quality of life. In conclusion, overweight and insulin resistance are two major contributing factors to PCOS pathogenesis and influence reproductive success. Clinical management should consider a comprehensive approach targeting both factors through lifestyle interventions and pharmacological therapy.

Abstract

Along with increasing life expectancy, the community tries to find solutions to health problems. One of the health problems that occur in humans is caused by fungi. Candida albicans is one of the fungi that can be found in humans. Candida albicans are normal flora in the vagina, digestive tract, and oral cavity. Nevertheless, it can change into a pathogen and cause changes in the host. Based on compound contained in leaf of mango bacang and leaf of bidara, they have antifungal effect. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity of single ethanol extract of mango bacang leaves and bidara leaves with a combination of bidara leaves ethanol extract and ethanol extract of mango bacang leaves against Candida albicans. The method of this study begins with collecting mango bacang leaves and bidara leaves then extracted maceration with ethanol solvents. The antifungal activity is tested with the disk diffusion method using potato dextrose media. Based on the results of the hypothesis test obtained a significance value of 0.010 <0.05, there was a difference in the diameter of the inhibition zone against the growth of Candida albicans due to a single giving and variations in the combination of ethanol mango bacang leaves and bidara leaves ethanol extract. Extract single antifungal activity after combined experienced a minimum increase of 1.2%. The conclusion of this study shows that the combination of ethanol extract of bacang mango leaves with bidara leaves ethanol extract has a larger inhibiting zone than a single extract and shows the synergy effect. The use of bacang mango leaves as anti-fungal is recommended in combination with bidara leaves.

Abstract

Gerakan Tutup Mulut (GTM), or “Refusal to Eat,” is a common nutritional problem among toddlers and contributes to reduced nutrient intake and an increased risk of malnutrition. Preliminary observations at Posyandu Aster 11 Way Kandis, Bandar Lampung, indicated that mothers had low levels of knowledge regarding the causes of GTM and limited exposure to responsive feeding education. This community service activity aimed to improve mothers’ understanding of the factors contributing to GTM and to introduce pisang barongko as an innovative, nutritious snack option to help prevent GTM. The methods utilized included educational sessions through leaflets, presentations, video demonstrations, and pretest–posttest evaluation using the Wilcoxon test. The activity involved 25 participants and resulted in an improvement in knowledge scores from an average of 66 to 94.8, demonstrating a significant increase of 28.80 (p < 0.05). High participant enthusiasm, effective material delivery, and the availability of educational outputs such as videos and leaflets supported the success of the program. These findings highlight the importance of nutrition education based on local food resources as a practical and sustainable strategy to prevent GTM in children.
