Abstract

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest destination countries for Indonesian immigrant workers, where the majority are women. Unfortunately, most of them are also victims of physical torture, sexual violence and rational discrimination. This resulted in many cases emerging as a result of this torture. However, the policies during the Jokowi era are considered quite progressive compared to the policies for protecting migrant workers during the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) period with the presence of special laws, not just Presidential Regulations as were issued during the SBY era. How and why the government plays such a significant role is the main study in this research. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library study type of research. The results found were that the government during Jokowi's leadership played a big role in protecting the rights of Indonesian migrant workers, especially in Saudi Arabia. This role is reflected in the government's responsibility in various policies which make Jokowi's policies considered pro People Diplomacy. Through the 2015-2019 Medium Term Development Plan, for example and supported by Nawa Cita, during the Jokowi government, Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers was issued as the highest legal umbrella which was then also followed by other policies such as bilateral cooperation and placement systems. channel (SPSK) or One Channel System. The Jokowi government's policy is based on two reasons. First, the fact that immigrant workers in Saudi Arabia contribute the largest remittance of all migrant workers in various countries, beating Malaysia (Kompas, 2023). Second, migrant workers are a potential profession to meet Indonesia's demographic bonus target in the future. Therefore, this research sees that the government's role in protecting migrant workers has been very good during the Jokowi administration. It's just that the issue of Indonesian migrant workers requires commitment from other actors who also play a very important role, such as distribution companies or providers of migrant workers.

Abstract

World trade traffic is very complex because it involves various actors, crosses various routes, distributes various goods and uses various means of transportation. However, international trade using sea transportation still dominates. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 Pandemic has had a broad impact, including on international trade conducted by Indonesia. For this reason, this research seeks to examine the role of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia IV (Pelindo) in international trade flows, specifically focusing on international trade flows at Soekarno Hatta Port, Makassar during the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, exploring what are Pelindo's obstacles in international trade flows at the Soekarno Hatta Port, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic? This study uses a qualitative approach to examine more deeply the two research focuses. The data used are primary data obtained from interviews and secondary data derived from literature studies. Using the concept of sea transportation and theories regarding the role of government as well as international trade theory, this research finds that PT Pelindo Makassar plays a major role in regulating the flow of container traffic entering and leaving the Port of Makassar. PT Pelindo Makassar, as the only state-owned company assigned by the state, is vital in ensuring that international trade flows can continue even during the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, even though international trade volume was affected by the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) policy and often faced delays and quarantine, PT Pelindo Makassar was able to survive because it had an integrated system with other stakeholders. So, do not face such a big obstacle. This data was obtained from direct interview data both by PT Pelindo Makassar itself and partners who use the services of the BUMN.

Abstract

Social media is the most popular communication tool in the world today, including for transnational digital activism activities. Social media helps to voice the voices of ordinary people, build awareness, and spread various ideas to various places. One of them is in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The problems that occur in Palestine are therefore important to study. As a global phenomenon that is currently receiving attention from various parties around the world, the Palestinian issue has become a humanitarian issue. For this reason, this paper questions how non-state actors participate in building narratives and efforts to stop war and peace through social media, including in this case Indonesian Muslims. This paper uses a media approach to understand the transnational activism of the Pro-Israel Product Boycott Movement. This study found that with many Indonesians who are young people and active users of social media, the campaign has had an impact on trade and consumption of goods and services from Israeli-affiliated brands or products. Although the reaction from associations, entrepreneurs and related parties was strong enough to encourage the Indonesian government to ban the action. However, the power of civil society and institutions such as the MUI, Muhammadiyah and NU is difficult to contain in this global campaign. This is because the organization and various public figures support it. This explains that although government-level efforts have been made and have not been able to stop the attacks and protect the rights of civilians in Palestine, grassroots strategies can be an alternative to change the global situation and stop the humanitarian crisis that is happening in Palestine.

Abstract

Indonesia has been present and is still able to maintain itself as a democracy icon that should be followed by other countries. As one of the largest democracies in the world, Indonesia in more than ten years is continue growing and transforming with its diversity in society, the dynamics and diversity issues. Indonesia was still able to maintain its identity as a democracy. Through these facts, this paper tried to describe the political situation in Indonesia in the 2014 Presidential Election, as well as reflect further on the response and the effect of foreign parties to the democratic mechanism. What happens in the electoral process in recent months and how Indonesia continues to become an example of the success stories of various identity democracies as diverse as a multicultural country, developing countries, as well as the country with the largest Muslim adherents in the world. This paper sees the problem through the concept of elections and democracy based on the analysis of identity. Where the author tried to look outside the box of the electoral process in the domestic political analysis that has been done before. Probe Indonesia based on its identity in the international sphere as a democratic state becomes interesting when its identity was assessed by comparing it with other identities such as identity and role as a developing country and collective identity as the Southeast Asian country. The papers argue that the election process in Indonesia is not only shaped by domestic factors. Indonesia democratization maturity today can’t be separated from the support of international and Indonesian efforts in playing a role and maintain its identity as a democratic country in the international sphere. Abstract

This article aims to explore the impact of halal certification of Indonesian products and the interplay between halal certification, Indonesia’s economic interest and International Trade Regime. This research uses qualitative approach taking Indonesia case study by collecting secondary data from varied sources. The findings indicate that the massive awareness of halal products especially cosmetic is not solely motivated by religious motive. The halal product is not substantially driven by religiosity. In fact, to understand the meaning of halal, this paper argues that companies that trade halal product do not follow Islamic values. Further, this paper suggests that Islam does not support economic system that prioritizes a few parties, put women as an object, not environmentally friendly, or wasteful. On the contrary, it promotes an order that is not fair for all. However, this paper further argues that halal trend in Indonesia trade system is more about the rise of Islamic populism. WTO therefore, has to be cautious on accommodating halal labelling in international trade. It must be opened to the needs of Islamic countries yet it has to be aware that it may become new form of protectionism which is unfair for global trade standards.

Abstract

Following the Asian Crisis, many believed that the era of the developmental state model had ended. However, amidst debates of pros and cons, there was a strong tendency to observe that, before the Jokowi administration, several Indonesian government policies were highly interventionist. This article examines the possibility that the developmental state model will no longer continue in Indonesia, which is merely a myth. Using a qualitative research approach that draws on various literature, including data from 2022–2024 and field research findings in Indonesia during the 2015–2021 period, this article argues that the developmental model has evolved toward a more practical and pragmatic approach. However, this article takes a different perspective than previous literature on Indonesia's developmental state model. By focusing on state-owned enterprises (SOEs) such as PT Perkebunan Nusantara, PT Semen Indonesia, and PT Pertamina, the article highlights three main points: first, the formation of holding companies enables SOEs to become strong economic players; second, the ambition behind the creation of these holdings is political; and third, the expansion trend reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the role of SOEs in national development. These three points indicate that Indonesia has transformed into a neo-developmental state model, at least since the SBY administration, followed by Jokowi. Ultimately, although the global expansion policy faces challenges, this does not signify the failure of Indonesia as a developmental state.
