Abstract

This research was based on the powerful function of the aesthetics in the society. Novel as an art work also functioned as an arena in which ideologies contest and negotiate. The research intended to show a mechanism underlining novel to have a significant hegemonic role. The material object was taken from Islamic popular novel namely “Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi dan Kembali”. The formal object was the negotiation of ideology which focused on the contact between intellectual and subaltern leading to the formation of a new compromised cultural practice. By applying the theory of hegemony in discussing the contestation and negotiation of ideologies in the novel, it is found that the contestation and negotiation between hegemonic and subaltern ideology lead to the occurrence of a compromise between the interest of the intellectual and the subaltern. The interest of the subaltern is based on the nostalgia of the past and fear or uncertain condition of future which lay in the domain of imagination that structures the novel.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan persepsi penerima telepon magis dari surga tentang kebenaran sebuah peristiwa magis dalam novel The First Phone Call from Heaven karya Mitch Albom.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the quality of idiom translation and identify strategies applied by the translator in translating English idiomatic expressions into Indonesian in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne, J.K. Rowling, and John Tiffany. In achieving these goals, this research uses mixed-method approaches. It is analyzed based on the Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) model by Nababan et al. (2012) and Baker’s theory about strategies for translating idioms (2018). Meanwhile, the data was collected through questionnaires distributed to the informants. The research finding showed that the translator applies five idiom translation strategies in 70 data. Based on the frequency, the idiom translation strategies are translation by paraphrase (58.6%), literal translation (27.1%), using the idiom with similar meaning but the dissimilar form (8.6%), using an idiom with similar meaning and form (4.3%), and translation by the omission of play of idiom (1.4%). Meanwhile, the average score for the accuracy of the translation is 2.8. The average score for the acceptability of the translation is 2,8, and the average score for readability is 2.8. Overall, the average score of the English idiom translation quality in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child books is 2,8, which indicates that the translation has good quality, in other words, most of the translation is accurate, acceptable, and easily understood by the target readers

Abstract

This study explores the phallocentric dimensions of pemmali—a traditional system of prohibitions and taboos—in the everyday conversations of the Bugis community in Manorang Salo, Marioriawa Subdistrict, Soppeng Regency. Utilizing a qualitative approach and deconstructive analysis grounded in Luce Irigaray’s concept of the symbolic order, the research examines how pemmali functions not only as a cultural moral code but also as a discursive mechanism that reinforces patriarchal norms. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation, and analyzed using a phallocentric deconstructive framework. The findings reveal that pemmali expressions frequently carry implicit gendered meanings, regulating behavior—especially of women and younger generations—under the guise of communal discipline and moral responsibility. These expressions are deeply embedded in everyday language and serve to uphold a symbolic order centered on male authority and social control. The study concludes that pemmali language constitutes a cultural product designed to maintain the Bugis cultural order, including the concept of siri, which forms a core part of the Bugis worldview.

Abstract

This study examines the moral values in Habib Aidarus bin Salem Al-Jufri's poem "Qashr al-Malik Banggai" using Michel Riffaterre's semiotic theory. Through library research analyzing primary and secondary sources, the poem reveals profound spiritual and ethical messages. It promotes virtues like tolerance, honesty, loyalty, and gratitude while condemning materialism and hypocrisy, asserting that knowledge and righteous deeds are life's only lasting virtues. The poem also emphasizes trust in God, repentance, and acceptance of divine will, contrasting worldly transience with the hereafter's permanence. Rich in literary devices metaphors, paradoxes, and symbolism, the poem contains 36 instances of indirect expression. It frames an eternal struggle between good and evil, centering on a core motif: "Knowledge is an adornment and the greatest good or is it wealth?" This unfolds into three dimensions: (1) the immortality of knowledge, (2) critique of materialism, and (3) reinforcement of religious teachings. The hypogram splits into two layers: a realistic layer addressing the poet's rebuttal of accusations, and an interpretive layer linking the text to the Quran, Hadith, and other poets' works.

Abstract

This article studies the dynamic changes of two beautiful women into fearful, monstrous females experienced by characters in Indonesian ghost movies such as Sundelbolong, Setan Sumiati, Kuntilanak, Suster Ngesot from Indonesia. This study argues that the changes into ghost pictures represent the reorientation of the earth into a dreadful, hostile nature. The balance of the condition of the narrative describes the harmonic union of the feminine and the masculine in marriage; the break and the loss of equilibrium indicate the grief, rape, and robbery caused by the separation of the feminine from the masculine and the presence of other masculine invaders. The rape and robbery symbolize the invasion and exploitation, and the rage of ghosts signifies the rage of the earth to the invasion and exploitation of unattended land, nature. Yet, they have different structures when narrating the goal of the ghost returning to the world and being forced back to the underworld. These similar structures are influenced by the cultural and political history of the society in which the story belongs. It also unveils how they (the land) deal with colonialization and exploitation.
