Abstract

This research was based on the powerful function of the aesthetics in the society. Novel as an art work also functioned as an arena in which ideologies contest and negotiate. The research intended to show a mechanism underlining novel to have a significant hegemonic role. The material object was taken from Islamic popular novel namely “Ketika Mas Gagah Pergi dan Kembali”. The formal object was the negotiation of ideology which focused on the contact between intellectual and subaltern leading to the formation of a new compromised cultural practice. By applying the theory of hegemony in discussing the contestation and negotiation of ideologies in the novel, it is found that the contestation and negotiation between hegemonic and subaltern ideology lead to the occurrence of a compromise between the interest of the intellectual and the subaltern. The interest of the subaltern is based on the nostalgia of the past and fear or uncertain condition of future which lay in the domain of imagination that structures the novel.

Abstract

Abstract

The meaning of thing in a discourse is potentially determined by soemoene who has the power. In this case, a discourse is purposely designed and conditioned by dominan institution. Through the language in a discourse, some bad characters or images can be attributed to someone such as subversive, fundamentalist, terrorist, and so on. Such phenomena also can be found in the terminology of black and white in the discourse about racism. Black is identical as the opposition of white. Whereas black is bad, white always has connotation with good things, such as purity, God, excellence, etc. Binary opposition of white and black is continously produced in the discourse about racism. Black people (negroid) are assumed inferior toward white (caucasoid). At the same time, language also contribute positive image toward people who have the authority. In that case, language is not only a grammatical system, but it leads to the conflict of interest. This paper is a result of library research toward a discourse about racism in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. The research was conducted by using poscolonialism and deconstruction approach. This reserach is aimed at revealing: (1) how are the image about black and white are constructed in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. (2) What are the binary opposition, decentering and fixasion aspects in that novels. The conclusion of this research shows that language is still powerfull in shaping ideas about racism, especially in keeping the issues of black and white as binary opposition.  Key words: discourse, binary opposition, power, racism

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Fairy tales are considered stories for children because of magical events in them. The consideration is based on assumptions that children's rationality is not well-developed yet. However, adaptation of fairy tales continues in the time when people do not believe in magic anymore, even they multiply the magical elements in the works of adaptation. This article analyses positions of magical and real elements in a fairy tale entitled ‘Snow White’ by Brothers Grimm and a film directed by Rupert Sanders called Snow White and the Huntsman. We apply theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon to recognize the adaptation as a product, process, and context while to map the magical elements in the two stories we apply magical realism by Wendy B. Faris. To explore the context of adaptation of the magical elements, constructionism by Vivien Burr is also applied. The results of this paper analysis show the position of magical element in the adaptation varies. The variation become possible First, the magical element is dominant in Snow White by Grimm but logic invades the magical element. Second, the adaptation of Snow white in the form of film shows the dominance of magical element in a hyper-contestation of magic. Third, both works are not magical realism works which support the same agenda in different ways. Grimm’s version supports colonialization discourse with the logic of the post-enlightenment paradigm, and the film version supports re-colonialization discourse through the contestation of magic that is technological rather than ideological.

Abstract

Since there was a merger one year ago, the world of Islamic banking has a new power to increase the attractiveness of prospective customers to join as customers for both savings and financing. However, if we look back, sometimes there is an obstacle to the Arabic term which they (customers) are ambiguous about, so this is the reason for this research. The purpose of this study is to determine the customer's understanding of Arabic terminology. This research is in the form of a field research with a descriptive qualitative approach, meaning that the research goes down to the field to find, explore and analyze the results of the field. Then analysis is carried out until the validity of the data results in accountable credibility. The results of the research are according to several informants from 3 customers of Islamic banks that Arabic terminology is a way that Islam has regulated the correct banking transactions and further said by other informants that the lack of understanding of Arabic terminology becomes an understanding when becoming a customer and the last is that Arabic terminology becomes an alloy that Islam and banking transactions have clear rules so that they can be safe from ribawi transactions.ABSTRAKSemenjak adanya merger satu tahun yang lalu, dunia perbankan syariah memiliki kekuatan baru untuk meningkatkan daya tarik calon nasabah untuk bergabung menjadi nasabah baik untuk tabungan maupun pembiayaan.

Abstract

This research studies the aesthetic hegemony of the New Order in Indonesia. Thus far, the understanding has been that aesthetic matters are not related to the capital and feudal assets that construct them. To the contrary, this research analyzes how these two assets played a strategic role in establishing the aesthetic hegemony of the New Order. The research is conducted in the qualitative tradition, through a content analysis with a critical paradigm perspective. The data include documents in the form of literature, government policies, and the results of interviews. The results show that the United States of America, through the Ford Foundation, played an active role and contributed significantly to the establishment of aesthetic hegemony in the New Order. The United States was an agent that provided scholarships for art academics, young scientists, and artists to study art and philosophy in America and Europe. The style of abstract expressionism and the philosophy of absurdism were developed in Indonesia as a result of the active role of the United States of America. On the other hand, the New Order also built cultural centers on a central and regional level, including cultural parks and arts councils that were used as tools of cooptation. Through the function of “mentoring and development”, the role of cultural parks was to control the aesthetic activities of Indonesian citizens to suit the tastes of the ruler. The research results show that the aesthetic hegemony of the New Order had a double face, one with a character of modernism based on Western aesthetics, and the other with a noble adiluhung character of traditionalism based on traditional art.
