Abstract

The phenomenon of viral justice has significantly transformed the law enforcement process in the era of social media and warrants thorough explanation and evaluation. However, previous research has failed to provide a comprehensive discussion of this phenomenon. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach to elucidate and analyze how the characteristics, factors, and implications of viral justice affect the law enforcement process in the social media era, while also addressing the deficiencies in prior studies. The findings of this study unveil three significant conditions for the viral justice phenomenon that have emerged and evolved during the social media era. Firstly, the features of legal violation cases that go viral on social media are complex, encompassing a wide spectrum from minor to major infractions. Secondly, the spread of law enforcement cases on social media is influenced by contextual factors, such as ineffective law enforcement, unaddressed reports, and a perceived lack of transparency in law enforcement. Thirdly, the viral justice phenomenon has significantly impacted the image of law enforcement in the social media era, leading to increasingly complex and contextual perceptions. This is evident in the growing public distrust, delegitimization, and negative associations with the concept of justice. This study also underscores the necessity of investigating the public's motivations for sharing their interactions with law enforcement on social media.

Abstract

The presidential election in Indonesia in 2024 has raised controversy in the process and implementation of democracy. However, this context has not been comprehensively discussed in previous studies. In addition to answering the shortcomings of previous studies, this research also focuses on the question of how the forms, factors, and implications of democratic controversy on the legitimacy of presidential election results in Indonesia 2024. This research reveals three important findings related to democratic controversy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. First, politicians’ and election organisers’ feeble commitment to complying with the rules of democratic elections. Second, the massive intervention of politicians and election organisers in the electoral process. Third, the controversy of democracy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia has long implications for citizens’ attitudes towards the legitimacy of election results. From these three contexts, it can be reflected that the democratic controversy in the 2024 Presidential Election in Indonesia not only caused democratic controversy in the electoral process and implementation, but also formed negative attitudes and perceptions of citizens towards the legitimacy of election results.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate studies that have addressed issues of democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. In addition to using bibliometric analysis, this study also uses VOSviewer application-based software in exploring and evaluating entity patterns, themes, and developments of studies that focus on discussing democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. From exploring 1063 total documents, this study found that the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Russian Federation are the most active in publishing studies focusing on democratic failure in Democratization Journal, Journal of Democracy, Political Quarterly, and Third World Quarterly. However, these studies have not been able to intervene and respond to the structural, cultural, and even spiritual challenges that underlie the difficulty of implementing a democratic political system in the era of globalization. This study also recommends the importance of future studies to analyze the factors and implications of the failure of democracy in concept and practice on the welfare of the people in a country.

Abstract

The Nibakng tradition is a vital cultural heritage that embodies local wisdom and is closely tied to the community's identity. However, with the rapid advancement of globalization and modernization, the tradition faces the risk of disappearing. This study aims to analyze cultural promotion policies and their role in preserving the Nibakng religious practice, which is embraced by the Dayak Bidayuh community in the border region of Siding District, Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan Province. A qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with local communities, traditional leaders, and policymakers, alongside document analysis of cultural promotion policies. The findings revealed that while these policies have contributed to the preservation of Nibakng, several obstacles remain, such as limited budget allocation, insufficient focus on involving younger generations, and challenges in local implementation. The study concludes that cultural promotion policies can help strengthen local cultural identity if they are supported by collaboration among local governments, traditional institutions, and communities. This research emphasizes the need for more comprehensive policy improvements, greater youth involvement, and enhanced cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries to ensure the sustainability of the Nibakng tradition, ultimately fortifying national identity in the border region.

Abstract

Intercultural communication disseminated on Instagram extends beyond visual content, encompassing culturally rich symbols that convey deep meanings. Despite its significance, this phenomenon has received limited scholarly attention. This study addresses this gap by examining intercultural communication practices on Instagram, focusing on language, culinary traditions, and performing arts content. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, the research explores how cultural elements are shared and represented through social media. The findings identify three primary contexts: (1) the use of native languages to introduce linguistic and cultural diversity; (2) the dissemination of traditional culinary content to reinforce cultural identity; and (3) the learning and sharing of traditional dance via Instagram as a strategy for preserving cultural heritage. These insights highlight Instagram’s role as an active, dynamic, and educational space for intercultural communication.
