Abstract

The Al-Zaytun issue has ignited a heated debate in Indonesia about religious pluralism, religious freedom, and human rights. This quandary, reminiscent of the Indonesian Ahmadiyya Muslim Congregation's situation classified as "heretical," demonstrates the historical tendency to pigeonhole alternative ideas. This highlights the hidden presence of takfiri ideology, a potentially divisive force despite its relative obscurity. In this context, this article examines the contentious Al-Zaytun case, in which the rejection of non-traditional Islamic teachings prompts a broader examination of the conflict between entrenched traditional practices, which represent the majority of Indonesian Muslims, and fundamental human rights principles, particularly religious freedom. Using an analytical method, it dissects media portrayals and examines the legal framework established by KUHP 2023, addressing religious violations and belief-based areas. The essay explores the case's potential under the prior KUHP 2021 through comparative research, revealing the various issues of interpreting and applying legislation in cases of blasphemy and religious disagreements. The study says that varied Sharia interpretations within Islam should not be used to justify restricting religious freedoms, mirroring Boaventura's interpretation of Talal Asad's discoveries, which confirm Islam's diversity of religious experiences and adaptive Sharia interpretations. Indonesia faces the challenge of cultivating a nuanced perspective that preserves individual liberty and communal harmony while balancing the intricate interaction of religious dynamics, legal systems, and human rights.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of media, especially online shop platforms, on Muslim teenagers’ clothing choices by considering religious values and media exposure. This research has a high urgency since it illustrates the impact of mediatization of clothing consumption on Muslim teenagers, who face a dilemma between maintaining religious identity and following fashion trends promoted by the media. in the context of globalization and cultural change, this phenomenon creates serious challenges that need to be understood and addressed by focusing on religious identity and values embraced by individuals, this research fills the gap from previous studies that tend to be underrepresented and geographically limited. Through a qualitative approach, this study examines the clothing consumption characteristics of Muslim teenagers by comparing previous research and journals and analyzing data from interviews and observations. The results highlight online media as a major factor in influencing the selection and consumption of clothing that may not be in line with religious principles. Recommendations for future studies include a broader analysis involving all religions in the digital age, and investigating the factors that influence the selection and consumption of clothing that may not be in line with religious principles.

Abstract

Studying the intersection of Islamic identity politics and governance in Aceh is crucial due to its implications for regional autonomy and national cohesion. Aceh's special autonomy, allowing the enforcement of Sharia law, highlights a unique governance model within Indonesia. This issue is underexplored in current research, which often overlooks the nuanced impacts of Islamic identity politics on both local governance and national policy integration. Previous studies have primarily focused on general autonomy or Islamic law without delving into how these elements specifically interact within Aceh's political context. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating how Islamic identity politics influences Aceh's legal and governance systems and its conflict with national policie. Using the theory of political identity and autonomy, the research employs a qualitative approach with a focus on case studies in Aceh, the research employs a qualitative approach with a focus on case studies in Aceh. Abstract

The presidential election in Indonesia in 2024 has raised controversy in the process and implementation of democracy. However, this context has not been comprehensively discussed in previous studies. In addition to answering the shortcomings of previous studies, this research also focuses on the question of how the forms, factors, and implications of democratic controversy on the legitimacy of presidential election results in Indonesia 2024. This research reveals three important findings related to democratic controversy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. First, politicians’ and election organisers’ feeble commitment to complying with the rules of democratic elections. Second, the massive intervention of politicians and election organisers in the electoral process. Third, the controversy of democracy in the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia has long implications for citizens’ attitudes towards the legitimacy of election results. From these three contexts, it can be reflected that the democratic controversy in the 2024 Presidential Election in Indonesia not only caused democratic controversy in the electoral process and implementation, but also formed negative attitudes and perceptions of citizens towards the legitimacy of election results.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate studies that have addressed issues of democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. In addition to using bibliometric analysis, this study also uses VOSviewer application-based software in exploring and evaluating entity patterns, themes, and developments of studies that focus on discussing democratic failure in the last two decades, 2004-2024. From exploring 1063 total documents, this study found that the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Russian Federation are the most active in publishing studies focusing on democratic failure in Democratization Journal, Journal of Democracy, Political Quarterly, and Third World Quarterly. However, these studies have not been able to intervene and respond to the structural, cultural, and even spiritual challenges that underlie the difficulty of implementing a democratic political system in the era of globalization. This study also recommends the importance of future studies to analyze the factors and implications of the failure of democracy in concept and practice on the welfare of the people in a country.

Abstract

The transformation of da'wah from offline to online is an important issue that needs to be studied in the context of the development of digital technology and changing patterns of social interaction in the modern era. While some previous studies have discussed the impact of digitalisation on religious practice, there is a gap in understanding how social media platforms such as Facebook change the dynamics of da'wah, especially in the context of recitations led by scholars such as Gus Ulil. The focus of this study is to examine how the digitalisation of da'wah affects the spiritual interactions between ulama and their followers, and how these changes affect the meaning and experience of religiosity in the digital era. This study is qualitative in nature with a focus on online recitations on Facebook, where data was collected through participatory observation, content analysis, and in-depth interviews. The data analysis process was conducted through the stages of coding, categorisation, and interpretation to understand the patterns of interaction and the impact of online dakwah. The key findings of this study show that digitalisation not only expands the reach of da'wah, but also changes the structure of religious communities to become more private and exclusive. Recommendations from this study include the development of more inclusive policies to support the sustainability of digital da'wah, as well as methodological approaches that can be used to improve the sustainability of digital da'wah.

Abstract

This study explores the hadith commentary (sharḥ) in Al-Arba‘īn an-Nawawiyyah by Muhammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Usaimin. It focuses on assessing the depth and methodology of al-‘Usaimin’s interpretation of the forty hadiths compiled by Imam al-Nawawī. The objective is to examine how al-‘Usaimin presents his commentary and how his approach contributes to a more nuanced understanding of Islamic teachings within a contemporary framework. This research adopts a qualitative library research design. The primary data source is al-‘Usaimin’s Syarḥ al-Arba‘īn an-Nawawiyyah, while secondary sources include relevant books, academic journals, and other scholarly works. Data were collected through various references, including printed and digital materials. The analysis applies discourse analysis, involving the systematic examination and interpretation of texts from both primary and secondary sources. The findings indicate that al-‘Usaimin’s commentary is marked by a strong integration of Qur’anic verses to reinforce the meanings of the hadiths. His adherence to the structure and order established by al-Nawawi reflects a methodological consistency, while his inclusion of supplementary hadiths enriches the explanatory depth. Overall, al-‘Usaimin’s work demonstrates a thoughtful and systematic effort to contextualize prophetic traditions for modern readers, offering a comprehensive and spiritually grounded interpretation.

Abstract

The controversy surrounding the implementation of Aceh’s Qanun No. 6 of 2014 on Islamic Criminal Law (Qanun Jinayat), particularly regarding corporal punishment through public caning, has been extensively examined from normative and political perspectives. However, scholarly attention remains limited in exploring how this issue is represented and reproduced within digital media spaces, despite the increasing significance of online platforms in shaping public opinion and negotiating legal meaning in a digitalized society. This article analyzes how online media narratives frame the enforcement of Qanun Jinayat and how digital discourses reflect and influence public perceptions of the legitimacy, ethics, and effectiveness of Islamic criminal law amidst tensions between local religious values and universal human rights principles. Employing a netnographic approach combined with framing discourse analysis, the study examines national and international online news articles published between November 2024 and January 2025, through the lens of three legal dimensions: law in the idea, law in the book, and law in action. The findings reveal stark narrative polarization: local media emphasize religio-cultural legitimacy and procedural legality grounded in special autonomy, while international media and human rights organizations highlight discriminatory practices, inconsistent implementation, and violations of individual rights. This study demonstrates that digital media function not merely as information conduits, but as discursive agents that actively shape, contest, and reconstruct the legal and moral legitimacy of Sharia in contemporary Indonesia. Consequently, Qanun Jinayat must be understood not only as a legal text but as a socially negotiated construct within the digital public sphere.

Abstract

This study explores the cultural and educational significance of Nandong Smong, a traditional oral literature form from Simeulue Island, Indonesia, which functions as both a disaster narrative and a medium of intergenerational knowledge transfer. The objective of this research is to analyze the lyrical content and sociocultural meaning embedded in the Smong song to understand its role in tsunami preparedness and collective memory among Simeulue communities. The study employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through direct observation in Simeulue and in-depth interviews with several local elders, who were asked to interpret the meanings and messages of the Smong lyrics. These primary data sources were supported by secondary data obtained from YouTube, where Smong songs were transcribed and examined word-by-word for textual analysis. The results reveal that Nandong Smong is not merely an artistic expression but a crucial oral tradition rooted in the island’s historical experience of the 1907 tsunami. The lyrics contain warnings, survival strategies, and moral teachings that emphasize local wisdom, memory, and collective responsibility. Furthermore, the discussion highlights the effectiveness of oral literature in shaping communal resilience and transmitting indigenous knowledge through non-formal education. The conclusion emphasizes the need to preserve Nandong Smong as both an intangible cultural heritage and an alternative model for disaster education. This research implies that integrating local narratives into disaster risk reduction strategies may enhance community preparedness in disaster-prone areas. Therefore, it is recommended that policymakers and educators consider incorporating oral traditions such as Nandong Smong into formal educational curricula and community-based disaster awareness programs.
