Abstract

This study explores the integral role of Islamic law (Sharia) in the propagation and practice of Hajj worship in 2024, through the lens of Ushul Fiqh (the principles of Islamic jurisprudence). Hajj, as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, demands meticulous adherence to ritualistic and legal guidelines that are deeply rooted in Islamic law. This research examines how Islamic legal principles shape the understanding, preparation, and execution of Hajj among contemporary Muslim communities. It delves into the jurisprudential foundations that underpin Hajj rituals, highlighting the dynamic interplay between traditional fiqh and modern contexts. Furthermore, the study investigates the educational and missionary aspects of Hajj, emphasizing how legal rulings are communicated and taught to prospective pilgrims. By analyzing recent fatwas, legal discourses, and practical implementations, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how Ushul Fiqh continues to influence the observance of Hajj in an evolving global landscape. This research not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the doctrinal aspects of Hajj but also offers insights into the broader implications of Islamic jurisprudence in contemporary religious practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Mahad Aly Zawiyah Jakarta in providing a specialized Fiqh education that addresses the unique demands of urban dakwah. With urbanization increasingly shaping the lives of Muslims in city environments, traditional approaches to religious learning often struggle to meet the practical and ethical challenges faced by urban communities. As a result, many urban Muslims may develop a limited or superficial understanding of Islamic principles. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research gathers data through interviews with educators and students, observations of classroom practices, and analysis of institutional documents to examine the curriculum, teaching methods, and impact of Zawiyah Jakarta’s Fiqh education program. Findings reveal that Zawiyah Jakarta effectively combines traditional Fiqh education with an awareness of modern urban issues, enriching urban dakwah efforts by addressing contemporary challenges. Notable features of Mahad Aly Zawiyah’s curriculum include contextualizing Fiqh teachings specific to urban settings, including ethical decision-making frameworks, and integrating contemporary societal issues, making the program highly relevant for urban Muslims. This study contributes valuable insights into Islamic education by presenting Zawiyah Jakarta’s program as a replicable model that other Islamic educational institutions can adapt. It offers a comprehensive framework for Fiqh education in urban contexts.

Abstract

The era of global disruption—marked by climate change, geopolitical tensions, and digital transformation—demands fatwa institutions to formulate responses that are both textually sound and contextually relevant. This study analyzes Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) model of ijtihad jamā‘ī (collective ijtihad) as practiced in the 2025 Bahtsul Masail Munas Alim Ulama, focusing on six fatwa decisions issued in 2024. A qualitative descriptive approach with thematic analysis was applied to NU’s official documents, with the primary subject being the official Materi Munas Alim Ulama NU 2025 published by PBNU, which contains six fatwa decisions across the categories of Waqi’iyyah, Maudhu’iyyah, and Qanuniyyah. The findings show that PBNU integrates turāth scholarship, contextual analysis, and maqashid al-shari’ah to produce progressive rulings on issues such as carbon trading, zakat on banknotes, equitable hajj dam distribution, and global conflict. These fatwas function not only as legal responses but also as normative instruments influencing fiscal innovation, environmental policy, transnational worship governance, and broader sharia-based public discourse. Theoretically, this research enriches discourse on collective ijtihad by situating NU’s fatwas within global Islamic legal debates and highlighting their epistemic originality. Practically, it emphasizes PBNU’s growing potential as both a national policy contributor and a credible global reference for maqāṣid-oriented, culturally grounded fatwa authority.
