Abstract

This paper describes Nidhal Guessoum, who tried to reconcile the epistemic between the Islamic tradition and modern science. The method used is descriptive content analysis. Nidhal sees that efforts to build relations between religion and science are still simplistic. He seeks to uncover the deadlock between the science of religion and philosophy and to present the principles of reconciliation of Islam and science more completely and systematically. This reconciliation effort departs from his critique of the condition of education and Arab society as well as the Islamic world as a whole, as well as the developing thoughts on the relationship between religion and science, which are sometimes too simplistic, both Sardar's ijmāli model, i'jāz an-Najjar model, and Islamization of al-Faruqi's model of knowledge. In Nidhal's view, these methods contain weaknesses, so those other alternatives are needed. The steps taken by Nidhal are to build a foundation for the creation of a harmonious relationship between science, religion and philosophy. He proposed a quantum approach through (1) the principle of no conflict between religion and science, (2) layered interpretation of the Qur'an, (3) theistic falsification.

Abstract

The relationship among globalization, modernity, the escalation of religiosity in Southeast Asia, and capitalism cause halal trend consumption raising. The phenomenon of halal certification in Indonesia is interpreted by scholars in myriads of thoughts. Some scholars describe it as a form of religion commodification with more profit oriented, rather than referring to Islamic values or the philosophy of the halal concept. The Islamic symbols are used as trading commodities or marketing goods. The other scholars interpret the issue as an effort to manifest the religious teaching and an expression of piety. Halal certification is a diffusivity phenomenon of sacred (concept of halal, piety) with profane thing (trade and commodification). The existence of halal certification in Indonesia is urgent owing to the inability to control the escalation of products distribution in the domestic market as a result of the food technology, technological engineering, biotechnology and biological chemical processes developments. Moreover, the condition of Muslim in Indonesia and one of the expression of piety is by consuming halal products. Anthropological studies indicate that the character of religious people is always destined to seek and ensure that what is consumed does not hinder their intimacy with God because purity and impurity is important for religious people regarding to the supernatural presence. In fact, there is a contiguity between commodification and an expression of piety in halal certification. It could be interpreted simultaneously to find the convergence. The importance of supervising the halal certification validation agency and the creation of legal verdict must be proceed.

Abstract

IntroductionIndonesia’s halal certification regime has expanded rapidly following the Halal Product Assurance Law, positioning halal assurance as both a consumer protection instrument and a strategic requirement for micro and small enterprises. To accelerate inclusion, the Free Halal Certification Program (SEHATI) applies a self-declare pathway that depends heavily on Halal Product Process Companions to facilitate verification and validation at the grassroots level. However, implementation performance varies across regions, raising questions about how frontline facilitation shapes program outcomes in geographically dispersed provinces such as South Kalimantan.ObjectivesThis study examines how Halal Product Process Companions operationalize SEHATI in South Kalimantan by analyzing their roles, constraints, and adaptive practices in assisting micro and small enterprises through the self-declare halal certification process. It also explores the structural and technical factors that contribute to implementation gaps between program targets and realized certification outcomes.MethodThis research used a qualitative field research design. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 37 Halal Product Process Companions selected purposively across districts and cities in South Kalimantan. Secondary data were obtained from relevant regulations, institutional reports, and prior studies. The analysis followed an iterative qualitative procedure involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.ResultsThe findings show that Halal Product Process Companions function as hybrid implementers who perform two interdependent roles: educating micro and small enterprises about halal requirements and providing technical support for verification, validation, and digital submission. Implementation is constrained by administrative complexity, unstable internet connectivity, platform limitations, and uneven institutional support. At the enterprise level, limited digital literacy, uneven halal knowledge, and weak responsiveness delay certification completion and increase facilitation workload. These conditions explain why SEHATI outcomes may fall short of targets despite simplified procedures.ImplicationsThe study highlights that SEHATI effectiveness depends on integrated capacity building and institutional support, including improved digital infrastructure, simplified workflows, stronger training, and structured supervision to sustain both accessibility and certification credibility.Originality/NoveltyThis research contributes field-based evidence on self-declare halal certification implementation by centering Halal Product Process Companions as frontline intermediaries whose dual roles and constraints shape the practical success of SEHATI at the provincial level.

Abstract

Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Law (Law No. 33/2014), now implemented under Government Regulation No. 42/2024, mandates halal certification nationwide, yet little is known about how Muslim consumers in non-Javanese, Muslim-majority regions perceive and prioritize halal labeling in daily consumption. This qualitative descriptive field study used semi-structured interviews with 130 purposively sampled Muslim informants across all 13 regencies/cities of South Kalimantan (97.06% Muslim, Banjar-majority), combined with observation and documentation (triangulation) and analyzed via the Miles and Huberman model; response-category frequencies are reported descriptively, not inferentially. Most informants treated halal labeling as decisive in consumption decisions (87%), extending beyond packaged goods into informal food stalls, canteens, and street vendors (63%), even in non-Muslim-majority localities. A smaller, consistent minority (13-25%) instead relied on personal trust in known Muslim sellers, indicating formal certification and relational trust operate as complements rather than substitutes. In this Muslim-majority setting, halal labeling functions less as a minority-market device for accessing halal meat and more as a locally embedded instrument of trust, safety, and religious identity that consumers expect applied inclusively across formal and informal sectors, with implications for BPJPH's certification-prioritization strategy and halal literacy programming..
