Abstract

The degradation of dental hard tissues caused by the acidic activities of bacteria and fermentation, coupled with the disruption of the delicate balance between demineralization and remineralization processes, leads to the formation of cavities known as dental caries. The elevated prevalence of dental caries among children can be attributed to poor oral hygiene practices. This situation arises partly due to improper tooth brushing routines and a preference for consuming cariogenic foods. Educational efforts have been undertaken to address proper tooth brushing techniques, promote a non-cariogenic diet that includes an increased intake of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, and provide education on hand hygiene as well as regular visits to the dentist every six months. The primary objective of these endeavors is to enhance children's knowledge and awareness of maintaining oral and dental health, with the ultimate goal of reducing the incidence of caries among children. After counseling, it was found that children's knowledge regarding dental health increased by 26.23%.

Abstract

Background: Oral health problems are still commonly found in Indonesia because there is a prevailing belief that dental issues do not cause death and, therefore, are not a priority. The prevalence of dental caries in children aged 10–14 years in Jakarta is 37.2%. Untreated dental caries can have various negative effects. Persistent pain may lead to difficulty chewing and sleep disturbances, affecting quality of life and productivity. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of caries on oral health in primary school students in West Jakarta. Methods: The study was conducted in seven public primary schools in West Jakarta between March 2024 and August 2024. Oral examinations and questionnaire surveys were completed by all students from the fourth to sixth grades, with a total sample size of 869 students. In this study, caries was the dependent variable, and the independent variable was oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Data analysis involved bivariate analysis using the Spearman correlation test. Results: There is a significant relationship between dental caries and OHRQoL (p = 0.01). Questions that are statistically related to caries were mostly found in the socio-emotional well-being dimension. Conclusion: This study demonstrates a correlation between dental caries and OHRQoL, indicating that a higher number of dental caries is associated with poorer quality of life.

Abstract

Introduction: The primary goals of orthodontic treatment are to improve mastication function and tooth alignment. The choice of orthodontic appliance type can be influenced by various factors such as treatment payment plans and economic status. Objective: To determine the association between payment scheme, insurance participation, and economic status with orthodontic appliance preference among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 158 undergraduate students in West Jakarta, taken by purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire in September 2025. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms and consisted of eighteen questions. Results: Fixed orthodontic appliances were chosen by the majority of respondents (88%), with orthodontic specialists fitting the appliances (61.4%). Non-installment payment was the most popular payment method (85.4%), with 65.2% of respondents spending IDR 10,000,000 or more on treatment costs. The majority of respondents did not use insurance for orthodontic treatment (91.8%). There was a significant association between the father's income with orthodontic appliance preference (p= 0.018). Conclusion: Orthodontic appliance preference is associated with father's income. However, orthodontic appliance preference is not associated with payment schemes, insurance participation, parental education, parental occupation, or the mother's income. Collaboration between insurance companies and healthcare providers is needed to develop subsidy program towards orthodontic treatment.
