Abstract

The appropriate planning of orthodontic therapy with regard to appliance selection, information on the patient’s stage ofsomatic maturity is needed. Hand wrist maturity has been shown to be closely related with the pubertal growth spurt;therefore hand wrist radiographs have been recommended for indirect assesment of somatic maturity. However, theroutine use of hand wrist radiographs has lately been questioned from the radiation-hygiene, safety point of view. In arecent cephalometric investigation, it was found that the frontal sinus development showed a growth rhythm similar to thebody height development. Furthermore, it has been proposed that frontal sinus enlargement follows general bone growthbut little evidence has been shown. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between frontal sinusdepth and hand wrist maturity in Deuteromalayid group aged 7 to 17 years. A cross sectional study was conducted in 138subjects (69 males, 69 females). The frontal sinus depth and hand wrist maturation was determined using Ertürk’s andFishman’s method, respectively. The result of this study showed that there was a moderate correlation between frontalsinus depth and hand wrist maturity in males (r = 0.608) and females (r = 0.647). From this study, it can be concludedthat the usage of frontal sinus depth to substitute hand wrist maturity to assess the skeletal maturity is not appropriateenough.

Abstract

Orthodontics plays a role in an individual’s appearance which can affect the perception of others that can vary greatly depending on their educational and social economic background. Objective: To determine if there were differences between dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions on facial attractiveness with normal occlusion and various types of malocclusions in Indonesian population. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 80 dentists and 80 non-dentists aged 23-49 years old. The perceptions differences between groups were assessed using visual analogue scale on ten photographs for each gender that have been digitally manipulated. Mann Whitney test was used to analyze the differences. Results: Normal occlusion is the most attractive condition for dentists and non-dentists. There are significant differences between dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions of facial attractiveness showing normal occlusion, increased overjet, increased overbite, reduced overjet, reduced overbite, mild crowding, open bite, and reversed overjet malocclusions (p < 0.05). Whilst both groups agreed (p > 0.05) that severe and moderate crowding were the least attractive malocclusion. Conclusion: Regarding the facial attractiveness, dentist’s and non-dentist’s perceptions are significantly different for most malocclusion types. However, there is an agreement that severe and moderate crowding are the most disturbing malocclusion that have a considerable effect on facial attractiveness.

Abstract

Background: Estrogens are sex hormon that play an important role in bone metabolism, including in bone remodeling during orthodontic treatment. Women has a monthly cycle which is affected by fluctuations of estrogen that is menstruation and ovulation. Purpose: The study was aimed to determine the differences of orthodontic tooth movement during menstrual an ovulation cycle. Methods: Five women were given ± 100 g orthodontic force using fixed orthodontic appliance with straight wire technique at the time of menstruation and ovulation with an interval of 1.5 months. Orthodontic tooth movement and levels of estrogen were measured during menstruation and ovulation. Results: Statistical results showed a significant differences between estrogen levels and orthodontic tooth movement (p < 0.05). When estrogen levels decline as in menstruation, tooth movement as results of orthodontic force would increase, whereas when estrogen levels increase as the time of ovulation, tooth movement would decrease. Conclusion: The estrogen level in menstruation and ovulation cycle may affect the tooth movement on ortodontic treatment.

Abstract

Background: Anchorage is one of the major concerns in orthodontic space closure. Various methods have been proposed to enhance posterior anchorage in space closure such as headgear, Nance holding appliance, and micro implant as temporary anchorage devices. However, several issues such as patient's compliance, appliance effectiveness, and cost of the device become many clinicians concern. The differential moment concept in segmented arch is a technique that requires no patient compliance but can effectively manage posterior anchorage and avoid bite deepening by careful application of forces and moments. Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to show the use of differential moment concept in segmented arch technique to manage posterior anchorage and to avoid bite deepening. Case: A 21 years old female patient with protrusive teeth as her chief complaint was treated using fixed orthodontic appliance. Case management: The treatment included four first bicuspid extraction and space closure utilizing differential moment concept in segmented arch. Conclusion: It can be concluded that application of differential moment concept in segmented arch technique is a non invasive, compliance independent, effective, and cost efficient method to manage posterior anchorage and to avoid bite deepening.latar belakang: Penjangkaran merupakan salah satu aspek yang sering kali menjadi masalah dalam penutupan ruang pada perawatan ortodonti.

Abstract

Background: Pain is a common problem encountered after fixed orthodontic appliance placement. Pain from orthodontic treatment can come from ischemia, inflammation, and edema in the periodontal ligaments that were depressed. Objectives: To determine whether there are differences in the pain reduction associated with chewing gum, taking acetaminophen, and gargling green tea after fixed orthodontic appliance placement. Methods: This study is a quasi-experiment with a controlled randomized post-treatment approach using 40 subjects. The subjects were consecutively selected and then randomly assigned into four equal groups: a group assigned to chewing gum, a group assigned to take acetaminophen, a group assigned to gargle green tea, and a control group. The level of pain was measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). A one-way ANOVA test was used to analyse differences between the groups. Results: The VAS scores of the chewing gum and acetaminophen groups were lower than the green tea and control groups. At 24 hours after fixed orthodontic appliance placement, only the chewing gum group reported a decrease in the amount of pain experienced. Overall, the chewing gum group reported the lowest pain scores compared to other groups. However, there was no overall statistically significant difference between the chewing gum and acetaminophen group (p>0.05). Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference in the amount of pain reduction experienced by the green tea group and the control group (p>0.05). There was a significant difference in the amount of pain reduction reported between the chewing gum or acetaminophen groups and the green tea group (p<0.05). Conclusion: There was no significant difference between chewing gum and taking acetaminophen in the amount of pain reduction experienced after fixed orthodontic appliance placement, but gargling with green tea was found to be significantly less effective in reducing pain. Because it has fewer side effects, chewing gum may be a more preferable alternative to taking acetaminophen to reduce pain after fixed orthodontic appliance placement.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Since early March 2020 until today, COVID-19 case in Indonesia is still a problem, requiring comprehensive efforts to manage and break the chain of transmission. Employees of Yvonne's Catering located in Cipinang Muara, possess oral health problems such as cavities, swollen gums, bad breath, and significant number of tooth loss. These problems affect employees' day-to-day performance – bad breath gets in the way of employees talking to customers, and toothaches affect employees while working in the kitchen. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people were afraid to have their teeth checked by dentists because dental treatment was considered a high risk of transmission of COVID-19 infection. Based on the problems above, Yvonne's Catering employees need training and education about the importance of maintaining oral health to prevent cavities which are closely related to overall health, and providing an understanding of emergency cases that need to be treated immediately to prevent the conditions from worsening that can be life-threatening. Information regarding the importance of implementing the 5M health protocol (wearing mask, washing hands, keeping distance, staying away from crowds, and reducing mobility) to protect oneself from exposure to the COVID-19 virus was also provided, including when visiting dentists. The main purpose of this community service is to increase the knowledge and skills of the community in maintaining maximum oral hygiene. Other goals in this community service include providing alternatives as an effort to maintain oral hygiene and health by making their own mouthwash using natural ingredients from their surroundings, such as Ocimum basilicum.

Abstract

The Academic Clinic is a supporting facility for the academic continuity of dental faculty students. The need for the preparation of a strategic plan for the development of academic clinic services as a health organization aims to anticipate various kinds of situations that are always changing and related to external and internal environmental factors. Strategic management tools can help generate some of the best alternative strategies for developing academic clinics with the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) approach. This study aims to develop a development strategy for the Dental and Oral Educational Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Trisakti (RSGM-P FKG Usakti) Academic Clinic based on four BSC perspectives: finance, customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. This operational research was conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods. Secondary data was collected from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), Hospital Annual Report, and comparable RSGMs. Primary data collection used questionnaires, interviews, and a Consensus Decision Making Group (CDMG) to obtain variables that became strategic factors. Based on four BSC perspectives, it increases academic clinic income from financial perspectives, provides easy access and increases customer trust for customer perspectives, captures market opportunities, builds a good image of academic clinics from an internal business processes perspective, and increases human resource capabilities for learning and growth perspective.
