Abstract

This article sets out the use of orality as an element in the interpretation of the Qur’an. Oralities in the Qur'an, such as rhyme, sound structure, and diction used in the Qur’an, are frequently regarded as part of the Qur’an’s miracles and are hardly linked with Qur’an interpretation. Indeed, the orality component is closely related to the messages found in the Qur’an. This article demonstrates that rhyme and sound structure are essential characteristics employed by the Qur’an to deliver messages through recognizing orality as an indispensable aspect of the Qur’an’s construction. Both can be perceived psychologically by listeners or readers of the Qur’an. Specific dictions in some verses were also employed as a medium to communicate the Qur'an's worldview while rejecting Arab society’s views at the time. Orality has become a prominent feature of Qur’an interpretation.

Abstract

Studies on the history of Qur'anic interpretation (tafsir) in Indonesia, such as those conducted by Riddel, A.H. John, and Howard M. Federspiel, generally do not relate to the tradition and culture of pesantren. In fact, as the oldest Islamic educational institution in Indonesia, pesantren has a dynamic and complex history and tradition of Qur'anic interpretation literacy. This article examines one side of the tradition of Qur'anic interpretation in pesantren through Tafsir Surah Yasinby Kyai Bisri Mustafa. This book of tafsir was selected; in addition to representing the tradition of interpretation in pesantren, science is used to explain the messages of the Qur'an in it. In this book, the explanation of science is not used as a justification for the scientificity of the Qur'an, nor is it used as a way to Islamise science, but as an affirmation of the spiritual aspects and implicit messages of the Qur'anic text. Axiologically, Kyai Bisri uses the scientific approach, not for science but to explain the sunnatullah (natural law) and divine existence. Through Tafsir Surah Yasin, he rejects Western science that tends to be materialistic-nihilistic and, at the same time, affirms the transcendence of science in Islam.

Abstract

This article examined the Javanese view on the earthquakes recorded in the manuscripts. Javanese people were chosen because they have a typical and unique view in interacting with fellow humans, nature and God. While the manuscripts were placed as a database, because it is a historical record, thoughts, attitudes, views in the past. There are three problems examined in this article, namely: how are the understanding and attitudes of the Javanese people towards earthquake events, what are the factors influencing that understanding, and what are the functions in disaster mitigation? By using Karl Mannheim's sociological theory of knowledge, it was found that Javanese people understand earthquakes as a sign system attached to predictive and subjective-imaginative meanings and spiritually responded to by prayer and slametan ceremonies. And the most important thing found in this study is that the Javanese understand the earthquakes actively and positively, in which they always move from one destiny to another to maintain harmony and safety.
