Abstract

Enormous amount of Gayo Arabica coffee-by-products highlights its potential as source of renewable energy. Utilizing coffee skin as a raw material for bio-briquettes is considered as an effective way to minimize their wastage as landfill. This study aims to examine the characteristics of bio-briquettes produced through the cold-forming process at a pressure of 100, 150 and 200 kg/cm2 without binder. Prior to briquetting process, the raw material was sun-dried, ground and sieved to 0.841 mm. A mixture was then made by adding water followed by molding and drying processes. Characterization of the briquette employs a number of techniques including DSC, TGA, bomb calorimeter and proximate analyses as well as mechanical testing. The results show that the calorific value of the coffee-skin briquette is 4764 cal/g containing 16.5 wt% of moisture, 12 wt.% ash. The rate of combustion is 0.019 g/s with ignition time of 196 s. Varying briquetting pressure results in a change in ignition time of bio-briquettes as the density is increased. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different seed age treatments and seedling media types on seed viability and vigor of tomato seeds. The results showed that seed age treatments significantly affected germination rate, vigor index, growth synchrony, growth rate, normal seedling length, and normal seedling fresh weight. Meanwhile, different seedling media treatments significantly affected tomato seed viability and vigor. Furthermore, there was a significant interaction between seed age treatments and media types on all parameters of tomato seed viability and vigor.

Abstract

Produksi kertas di Indonesia berdasarkan Balai Besar Pulp dan Kertas (BBPK) mencapai 12,98 juta ton/tahun.Kertas yang telah digunakan dan dibuang dapat menimbulkan masalah bagi lingkungan. Kandungan selulosa pada kertas sangat tinggi sehingga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku bioetanol. Limbah kertas HVS merupakan salah satu jenis limbah padat yang mengandung selulosa tinggi dan berpotensi dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan bioetanol. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh perbandingan hidrolisis asam HCl terhadap bahan baku serta waktu fermentasi terhadap kadar, densitas, dan viskositas bioetanol yang dihasilkan. Proses hidrolisis dilakukan menggunakan larutan HCl dengan perbandingan 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 dan 1:5 antara asam dan kertas HVS, kemudian difermentasi menggunakan mikroorganisme Saccharomyces cerevisiae selama 3, 5, dan 7 hari. Setelah fermentasi selesai, hasil cairan dianalisis meliputi kadar bioetanol tertinggi pada perbandingan 1:5 pada waktu fermentasi selama 5 hari dengan nilai 7,22% menggunakan piknometer, densitas (0,7881g/mL), dan viskositas (1,135mPa·s) menggunakan viskosimeter Ostwald..
