Abstract

Background: Prison inmates are vulnerable to mental health disorders due to psychological stress during their sentence. Family social support is believed to play a protective role in maintaining psychological stability. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between family social support and mental health among inmates at the Class IIB Banyumas State Detention Center. Methods: The research method used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample size was 185 respondents using a total sampling technique. The research instruments included a family social support questionnaire (14 items) and the SRQ-20 (20 items) to assess mental health. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents reported moderate (45.9%) to high (37.8%) family social support. Most respondents did not experience symptoms of mental disorders (84.9%), while the remainder experienced mild (12.4%), moderate (2.2%), and severe (0.5%) symptoms. Statistical tests showed a significant relationship between family social support and mental health (p=0.008). Conclusion: Family social support is significantly associated with the mental health of inmates. The higher the level of family support received, the better the mental health of inmates.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a transitional phase characterized by physical, psychological, and reproductive system changes, including menstruation. Dysmenorrhea is a common problem among adolescent girls that can interfere with daily activities and is influenced by unhealthy dietary habits, while adolescents’ understanding of the relationship between diet and reproductive health remains limited. Objective: The purpose of this community service activity was to improve adolescents’ knowledge and encourage the adoption of healthy eating patterns to reduce the risk of dysmenorrhea. Method: This activity was conducted through health education using interactive lectures, discussions, educational videos, and booklet distribution. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test, as well as dietary monitoring using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for two weeks after the intervention. Result: The activity involved 21 female students and showed a significant improvement in knowledge. The proportion of students with good knowledge increased from 47.37% to 73.68%, while the moderate category decreased from 36.84% to 21.05% and the poor category decreased from 15.79% to 5.26%. The average knowledge score also increased. Conclusion: Health education on healthy eating patterns is effective in improving knowledge and encouraging behavioral changes among adolescents. Continuous school-based interventions are needed to support reproductive health and reduce the impact of dysmenorrhea.

Abstract

Hypertension is a prevalent health problem that increases the risk of cardiovascular complications. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological interventions such as brisk walking exercise play an important role in helping control blood pressure. This study aimed to analyze the effect of brisk walking exercise on blood pressure reduction among patients with hypertension in the working area of Puskesmas Kembaran 1, Banyumas Regency. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 32 respondents were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of hypertensive patients without complications and with stable conditions. The intervention consisted of brisk walking exercise performed for three consecutive days, 15 minutes per session. Blood pressure was measured 30 minutes before and after each intervention using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. Data analysis used the paired t-test for systolic pressure and the Wilcoxon test for diastolic pressure. The results showed that most respondents were late elderly (56.3%), female (62.5%), and had a family history of hypertension (65.6%). The mean blood pressure before the intervention was 149.47 mmHg (systolic) and 89.97 mmHg (diastolic). After the intervention, it decreased to 142.09 mmHg and 84.38 mmHg, respectively. Statistical tests indicated a significant reduction in systolic (7.38 mmHg) and diastolic pressure (5.59 mmHg) with p = 0.0001. The study concludes that brisk walking exercise has a significant effect on reducing blood pressure among hypertensive patients. This intervention is recommended as a simple, safe, and affordable strategy for hypertension management in primary health care settings
