Abstract

Food independence is a reference for a country in solving various problems related to the availability of the necessities of life for people who do not depend on other countries, especially the livestock sector. Prioritizing the development of local livestock such as native chickens as producers of food products of animal origin, able to answer challenges in the world of animal husbandry as it is today. This study aims to: (1) conduct an analysis of the factors that influence the development of free-range chicken in the city of Padang, (2) provide an alternative strategy based on the potential of the city of Padang for a better free-range chicken development effort. This research was conducted by conducting surveys and direct observations at the research site. The research was carried out in three stages: 1) Identifying and analyzing external factors from the free-range chicken development effort, 2) Identifying and analyzing the internal factors of the free-range chicken development business, and 3) Creating alternative strategies for the development of free-range chicken livestock in the city of Padang. From the results of the study, it is known that the city of Padang has a carrying capacity index of 9.2 which means that it is included in the category of good carrying capacity for the development of free-range chicken businesses. Abstract

The increasing volume of collagen and gelatin rich by-product waste from the livestock and fishery industries triggers environmental pollution if not managed optimally. This article aims to review the potential utilization of collagen and gelatin hydrolysates from animal waste as functional feed ingredients that support the sustainability of the livestock industry. The review was conducted by searching and analyzing various research findings on animal waste sources, methods of producing bioactive peptides, biological activities, and their effectiveness in animal feed. The application of bioactive peptides in feed has been shown to be able to improve growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, gastrointestinal health, carcass quality, and the resistance of livestock to oxidative stress and disease. In addition to increasing livestock productivity, the utilization of animal waste as a source of bioactive peptides also supports the concept of a circular economy and sustainable waste management. However, its application still faces technical and biological challenges, such as the risk of zoonotic diseases, the halal status of raw materials, quality variability, and the vulnerability of peptides to degradation at high temperatures during feed manufacturing processes such as pelletization. As a solution, the utilization of this waste requires standardization of the extraction process, encapsulation technology to maintain peptide stability, and the implementation of a strict quality assurance system. This innovative approach not only provides a competitively valued alternative protein source but also supports the implementation of circular economy principles and zero-residue waste management.

Abstract

Tropical cattle generally have lower productivity than subtropical cattle due to poor forage quality, high lignin content, heat stress, and inefficient ruminal nutrient utilization. The rumen microbiota, consisting of bacteria, archaea, protozoa, anaerobic fungi, and bacteriophages, plays a crucial role in feed fermentation, microbial protein synthesis, and volatile fatty acid production, which support animal growth and performance. This review aimed to summarize current strategies for rumen microbiome modulation to improve tropical cattle productivity. The novelty of this review lies in integrating various modulation approaches and evaluating their applicability under tropical conditions, particularly in Indonesian smallholder livestock systems and the utilization of locally available feed resources. A narrative review was conducted using 55 peer reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2025 from Scopus, ScienceDirect, Springer, MDPI, and Google Scholar. The findings identified four major microbiome modulation strategies: feed and additive modulation, supplementation with Direct Fed Microbials (DFM), partial defaunation using phytogenic compounds, and molecular approaches utilizing omics technologies and genetic engineering. Supplementation with *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*, *Lactobacillus* spp., and *Bacillus* spp. has been reported to improve fiber digestibility, average daily gain, and immune responses. Partial defaunation using local plants rich in tannins, saponins, and lipids can reduce methane emissions, although production responses vary. Omics technologies provide opportunities for precision interventions through the identification of target genes involved in methanogenesis and fiber degradation. Overall, integrating locally available feeds, feed additives, and microbial supplementation appears to be the most practical strategy for improving rumen efficiency and productivity in Indonesian tropical cattle, while omics technologies offer promising prospects for future precision livestock production.

Abstract

Hymenachne amplexicaulis (rumput kumpai) merupakan hijauan tropis dengan potensi besar sebagai sumber pakan berkelanjutan di lahan rawa. Tinjauan ini secara sistematis menganalisis adaptasi morfologis dan fisiologisnya terhadap genangan, hipoksia, tanah masam, dan toksisitas aluminium, serta responsnya terhadap intervensi biologis seperti Fungi Mikoriza Arbuskula (FMA) dan pupuk organik. Hasil tinjauan menunjukkan bahwa tanaman ini mampu membentuk aerenkima, menjaga keseimbangan rasio K⁺/Na⁺, serta menekan stres oksidatif sehingga tetap mampu tumbuh pada lahan suboptimal. Integrasi FMA dan pupuk organik terbukti meningkatkan biomassa, kandungan protein kasar, serta kecernaan hijauan. Potensi pemanfaatan lainnya, termasuk suplementasi dalam ransum ternak dan kontribusi terhadap mitigasi emisi gas rumah kaca, semakin menegaskan nilai strategisnya. Meski demikian, pengelolaan yang ketat tetap diperlukan untuk mencegah sifat invasifnya, disertai seleksi genotipe unggul dan penelitian lanjutan mengenai mekanisme toleransi cekaman pada tingkat molekuler. Dengan pendekatan integratif yang mencakup aspek agronomi, ekologi, dan bioteknologi, Hymenachne amplexicaulis berpotensi menjadi komponen kunci dalam sistem pakan tropis berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Ketersediaan pakan merupakan faktor utama yang menentukan kapasitas produksi dan keberlanjutan usaha ternak unggas. Kabupaten Tanah Laut memiliki posisi strategis sebagai sentra pasar ternak di Kalimantan Selatan, namun pengembangan unggas di wilayah ini masih terkendala oleh rendahnya kemandirian pakan akibat ketidakmerataan distribusi pakan antarkecamatan. Berdasarkan data statistik terbaru, kesenjangan akses pakan ini berdampak langsung pada efisiensi usaha, terutama di kecamatan dengan populasi unggas tinggi namun produksi pakan lokal yang terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis profil populasi unggas, ketersediaan pakan lokal, serta implikasinya terhadap pengembangan ternak unggas di setiap kecamatan. Data yang digunakan adalah data sekunder dari Dinas Peternakan dan Kesehatan Hewan serta Badan Pusat Statistik Kabupaten Tanah Laut tahun 2023-2025. Analisis dilakukan secara deskriptif melalui tabulasi dan interpretasi terhadap produksi pakan, kebutuhan pakan, serta struktur populasi unggas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa total produksi pakan lokal mencapai 134.462 ton per tahun, sedangkan kebutuhan pakan mencapai 1.993.260 ton per tahun. Ketimpangan ini mengindikasikan bahwa sebagian besar kecamatan mengalami defisit pakan, terutama wilayah dengan populasi ayam pedaging dan petelur yang tinggi. Hanya sedikit kecamatan yang memiliki kapasitas produksi pakan lebih baik, seperti Kurau yang berpotensi menjadi sumber bahan pakan bagi wilayah lain. Temuan ini menegaskan perlunya strategi peningkatan produksi bahan pakan lokal dan penguatan distribusi antarkecamatan untuk mendukung pengembangan unggas secara berkelanjutan di Kabupaten Tanah Laut.
