Abstract

Papua has a high diversity of butterflies, especially in mainland areas. Most of the data on the diversity and distribution of Papilionoidea, such as the example of Papilio ulysses in the mainland of Papua, are well known. Butterfly research in Papua is mostly aimed at species richness and abundance. Based on the results of specimen collection at the Papua Insect Collection Laboratory (KSP) Br Henk van Mastrigt FMIPA UNCEN, it can be seen that there are differences in morphological characters between P. ulysses in several areas in Papua, especially in the highlands and lowlands. The purpose of this study was to analyze the phenotypic plasticity pattern of P. ulysses stored in the KSP Laboratory. This research method is descriptive quantitative. The research sample consisted of 58 specimens with perfect wing shapes. The specimens were collected from Jayapura, Sarmi, Mamberamo, Timika, Pegunungan Bintang, Waropen and Biak-Supiori. The samples were documented using a digital camera and observed for wing variations using the Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Image J free program. Based on the observations, it shows that there are significant differences in the shape and size of P. ulysses that are found on the mainland and on islands. The morphology of butterflies originating from large areas is bigger than those of butterflies on islands. This butterfly plasticity process is a form of morphological adaptation to the surrounding environment.  Key words: plasticity; P. ulysses; butterfly; Papua.

Abstract

Ornitophera sp. is one of the groups of butterflies endemic in Papua and West Papua provinces. The significant morphological differences between male and female butterflies (dimorphism) are in the shape, size and color of the wings. Morphological characteristics are important sources of information. Based on the results of specimen collections at the Papua Insect Collection Laboratory (KSP) Jayapura, there are several species from various locations in Papua. The variation in dimorphism is likely to occur in this species which gives rise to new sub-species. The purpose of this study was to record the dimorphism of the endemic Bird Wing of Papua which had been stored in the Papua Insect Collection Laboratory (KSP) Jayapura. The method used is a direct measurement of the morphology of bird wing butterfly specimens stored in the KSP Laboratory, Cenderawasih University. Morphometric data were analyzed using the SPSS 20 and Multi Variate Statistical Package (MVSP 3.1) programs. The results obtained were 7 Ornithoptera species stored in the KSP Jayapura Laboratory, namely O. chiamera, O. goliath, O. meridionalis, O. paradisea, O. priamus, O. thitonus and O. rothschildi. Based on observations there are striking differences in color, shape and size between male and female in the same species.   Key words: birdwing butterfly, Ornithoptera sp., KSP Jayapura, dimorphisme.

Abstract

The purpose of this activity is to design an insect identification playbook and introduce and directly practice insect identification through this playbook to teachers and elementary school students at Sekolah Alam "Isyo Hills" Kampung Rhepang Muaif, Nimbokrang, Jayapura Papua. The method used in this design begins with the phase of making the playbook material concept, making the design and choosing characters to layout, and the finalization stage for the final result. This design produced a playbook in the form of a books by displaying the discussion of the material insect introduction with coloring activities for insects namely Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and Coleoptera (beetles). The next activity is training which is carried out on July 2021, involving 11 students, representatives of elementary school grades 1 to 5 and junior high school from Sekolah Alam ‘’Isyo Hills”. The training provided includes the presentation regarding the introduction of insects through the design of playbook. Furthermore students directly practice the coloring activities for several species examples of insects in the playbook. The training which was conducted for the teacher and students at Sekolah Alam “Isyo Hills” Kampung Rephang Muaif has been going well. The enthusiasm of the participants in participating in this training was very high. This indicates that the training participants have responded positively to the activities that have been carried out. Keywords: training; design of playbook; insect; Rephang Muaif.

Abstract

Kitchen waste is the result of household activities which include organic and inorganic waste in the form of liquid and solid waste.  Basically, kitchen organic waste can still be used to produce of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC). The material presented in the socialization of this community service activity aims to (1) introduce useful plant species for household needs that can be grown in pots, and (2) provide knowledge on making and using Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) from rice water. Participants of this activity is the members of the Women’s Fellowasip (PW) GKI Getsemani Kotaraja Jayapura.  This training Activity was carried out from 26th of August to 3rd of September 2021, during the COVID 19 pandemic, so the socialization of the material was carried out in the form of online presentations, while practical material was provided via print out material.  Then, the participants practiced making rice water POC and the planted useful plants in pots independently at their respective homes.  Each participant was given a package consisting of compost soil, EM4, flower pots, also flower and plant seeds.  The results of the implementation of this activity showed an increase in the understanding and knowledge of the training participants about useful plant species for household needs and making process of POC, and then being able to use it to fertilize useful plants around the house. Keyword: rice water waste; Liquid Organic Fertilizer; POC; pot gardening; GKI Getsemani Kotaraja; Jayapura.

Abstract

The Isyo Hill’s Bird Watching Ecotourism Area in Rhepang Muaif Village, Nimbokrang District, Jayapura Regency is a tourist destination that welcomes visitors from various countries, with food and beverage services provided by local culinary groups. The main challenge in culinary presentation is creating dishes that are not only delicious but also visually appealing. The use of natural colorants is a safe and health-beneficial alternative to synthetic dyes. The local community is already familiar with several natural color sources such as kesumba keling fruit (Bixa orellana), turmeric (Curcuma longa), and teak leaves (Tectona grandis), and has the potential to develop additional natural color sources, such as butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea). This community service initiative aims to enhance the community’s knowledge and skills in utilizing natural colorants in food and beverages. The implementation method consists of three stages: outreach, discussion through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and practical training. The results of the activity demonstrate an increase in participants’ understanding and ability to apply natural colorants, as evidenced by processed products such as steamed sponge cake and sliced nagasari using butterfly pea flower colorant, as well as beverages made from butterfly pea flower extract. Additionally, a guidebook containing information on natural colorants and processed food recipes was compiled as an output of the activity. This initiative is expected to support the enhancement of the quality of healthy, appealing, and value-added local culinary offerings for the ecotourism sector at Isyo Hill’s.

Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a fruit with high nutritional value and significant potential to be developed into various processed food products. However, its utilization in the communities remains limited as papaya is generally consumed fresh or processed into simple dishes such as juice and vegetables. This community service activity aimed to increase public knowledge and skills in diversifying papaya-based food products by introducing the processing of papaya into a healthy dipping sauce that is free from artificial sweeteners and preservatives. The activity also sought to increase awareness of the economic potential of papaya-based processed products. It was conducted on August 9, 2025, in collaboration with the local community of Rhepang Muaif Tourism Village, at the kitchen pavilion of Isyo Hills Bird Watching Campsite. A total of 13 participants were involved, consisting of 8 youths, 3 middle-aged adults, and 2 elderly individuals. The implementation methods included socialization, hands-on training, and direct assistance in the preparation. The training utilized simple methods, common kitchen tools, and easily accessible ingredients. The results showed that participants were able to produce a spicy and healthy papaya-based dipping sauce that can be consumed with various snacks, such as boiled sweet potatoes, boiled bananas, fried bananas, and french fries. The product demonstrates potential economic value due to its affordability, health benefits, and marketability. Overall, the activity was well received, with participant satisfaction rates of 100%, indicating a positive response, successful implementation, and benefit to the community.

Abstract

The community project for developing a trilingual insect photo book aims to create a learning tool at Sekolah Alam Yombe Yawa Datum, Kampung Wisata Rhepang Muaif, Nimbokrang, Kabupaten Jayapura. This book is designed in three languages: Indonesian, English, and Namblong, with the goal of supporting nature-based learning and introducing students to the rich local biodiversity. The insect photo book not only facilitates the introduction of insect species found in the surrounding area but also serves as an innovative language learning tool. Through this development, students are expected to better understand the local ecosystem while improving their literacy in three languages. This project involves a collaborative process between teachers, students, and the local community and is integrated with outdoor field activities. The activities were carried out at Sekolah Alam Yombe Yawa Datum, involving 23 participants aged 6-16 years. The results of the project indicate that this trilingual book has had a positive impact on students' learning interest and has encouraged active participation in environmental and cultural preservation
