Abstract

This research studied kinetics of thermal degradation of polystyrene (PS), and sulfonated polustyrene (sPS) which were synthesized from styrofoam waste. The thermal study was conducted by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at various heating rate of 10, 15, 20 and 25 dpm. The kinetics parameters were determined by Coats Redfern (CR), Friedman (FM), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) models. TGA result found that PS has range thermal stability of 274 – 415 oC, but sPS has range thermal stability of 175 – 582 oC. Kinetic study to PS shows that the activation energy increases by the increasing of fraction conversion for all kinetics parameters with a regression value close to 1. While in sPS, the CR method shows an increase in activation energy value with an increasing fraction convertion. On the other hand, CR-FM-KAS and OFM methods obtained an increase in activation energy, then decreased at the fraction convertion above 0.6, and received negative activation energy. The kinetics model successfully explains the degradation of PS and sPS. In addition, the high thermal stability of sPS from styrofoam waste shows that this material has good potential as polymer electrolyte materials.

Abstract

This research explores the role of the body in the Irish literary work, Normal People. Written by renowned Irish author Sally Rooney, the novel narrates how contemporary Irish society experiences shifts in its social structure. It delves into the lives of young Irish characters as they navigate social and political upheaval in relation to the Western culture that serves as their cultural axis. This culture is, in part, represented through the colonized form of the body. Rooney elevates this concept to emphasize her political stance that the body has become a manifesto in the ideological struggle against the encroaching Western influences. By employing Lucien Goldmann’s theoretical framework, this article demonstrates the intersection of the body and alcohol, connecting the historical memory of the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Moreover, the article contends that the United States of America has colonized the bodies of the Republic of Ireland’s society through the consumer patterns of popular culture introduced in television advertisements. Keywords – Alcohol, Colonization, Political Beliefs, Popular Culture, Television Commercials.

Abstract

Abstract

The capitalist ideology has been critiqued in various disciplines, including literature, especially when executed by tyrant governments or influential individuals. This article examines how modern discourse, such as the novel Normal People by Sally Rooney, represents issues of capitalism in Ireland, which impact the rights of its people and their access to mental health. The study is a qualitative scrutiny of the novel, applying the Marxist Theory of Ideology by Louis Althusser to investigate such representations. The primary data from the novel and the secondary information from other sources are interpreted to investigate three main questions: How do Normal People portray capitalism in Ireland, how does this ideology impact the individual rights of its people, and how does it affect access to mental health problems? The study results indicate that the novel portrays the pervasiveness of capitalist ideology in the hearts of Irish people, affecting their rights to live and the freedom of expression, and the practice of capitalism has a substantial impact on Irish youngsters' mental health. Due to the limitations of the methods and data comprehensiveness, further studies on Normal People may consider alternative literary lenses, such as pragmatic and other analytical approaches, looking at sociocultural institutions and systems.

Abstract

Abstract. This article analyzes the consequences of consumerism in American society as portrayed in Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club. This article aims to examine the portrayal of consumerism in the novel and its consequences in the context of American society. We use one of the Marxist critical theories of consumerism proposed by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer. The analysis method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method using Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club as the primary data source and other data sourced from some applicable sources were used as the secondary data to support the analysis. The article delineates three consequences of consumerism in the novel that portray the American society from the 1950s until the 1990s. The consequences include the standardization, pseudo-individuality, and commodity fetishism. They are mainly caused by the growth of consumerism since the end of World War II.Keywords: American society, consequences of consumerism, Fight Club,  literary portrayal
