Abstract

Seberang Padang Village, South Padang District, is next to Padang City, which has approximately 200 families. This location is a crossing area between Padang-Painan, in West Sumatra. The community consists of two existing traditional markets that sell daily necessities. Besides that, there is also one elementary school, two junior high schools, and one high school. The global Covid-19 pandemic certainly affects the community's daily activities and learning activities, including children, elementary school students, middle and high school students, and the village community to fulfil their basic needs. Furthermore, the main problem of Covid-19 is not only about the effects caused by the virus on sufferers but also about its high-speed transmission. Therefore, to educate the community around the Seberang Padang village, several Chemistry Lecturers and students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Andalas University did a community engagement. They taught the community about making disinfectants and hand sanitizers without alcohol that can overcome the occurrence of Covid-19 transmission. In addition, face masks were provided for the community, and the alms of food for underprivileged residents to push down the negative impact of Covid-19.

Abstract

Lantana camara Linn is a family of Verbenaceae that grows in tropical and subtropical areas and spread in about 50 countries in the world. This plant contains essential oils with different contents based on the difference in the place of growth. The purpose of this study was to isolate and determine the chemical content of the essential oil of L. camara Linn leaves obtained from Agam, Tanah Datar, Kampar Regency, Padang Panjang City and to determine its cytotoxic and antibacterial activity. Isolation was carried out by hydro distillation method and chemical content analysis using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The high yield from the isolation of essential oil from leaves of L. camara Linn obtained from Tanah Datar Regency was 0.095% (w/w). The results of the analysis of the essential oil content with the main compounds for all Regency and City being caryophyllene with the high area percent was Tanah Datar Regency (19.74%). Cytotoxic activity test using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method showed that L. camara Linn essential oil was highly toxic with an LC50 value of 28.34 µg/mL from Padang Panjang City. Antibacterial activity test by disc diffusion method showed that L. camara Linn essential oil had moderate antibacterial activity againts Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria, with high clear zone from Agam Regency was 12.9 mm and Tanah Datar Regency was 7.8 mm, respectively, at concentration of 100%.

Abstract

Chemistry is one of the subjects taught in State Senior High Schools (SMAN), especially in Natural Sciences (IPA). The problem with chemistry subjects is that it is difficult to practice in the laboratory because laboratory facilities such as space, equipment and chemicals are expensive. As a result, chemical laboratory practices were only sometimes carried out. Several lecturers and students from the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA Unand Kimia Unand, carried out service activities at SMAN 16 Padang through laboratory practice using materials and equipment that were cheap and readily available in the surrounding environment. This community service aims to train teachers and students to carry out chemistry practicums using simple materials and equipment available around them. The training was given to chemistry subject teachers and students in the science laboratory at SMAN 16 on 17 and 21 November 2022. The material was practised in oxidation and reduction (redox) and electrolysis reactions. The activity went smoothly; the students enthusiastically carried out the practicum. Through the results of this simple chemistry practicum, students can design and carry out chemical experiments using simple tools and materials, conduct direct observations of chemical processes, practice scientific thinking, attitude and work skills and analyze and solve various scientific processes using scientific methods. SMAN 16 hopes that this activity will continue with different topics.

Abstract

Salam plant (Syzygium polyanthum) is a plant from the Myrtaceae family and the Syzygium genus, which is widely used as a traditional medicine to treat hypertension, ulcers, diarrhea, skin diseases, lower cholesterol, control uric acid levels, and diabetes. This study aims to isolate and characterize secondary metabolites from the ethyl acetate extract of bay leaves. Isolation of secondary metabolites was carried out by column chromatography and characterization with Ultravolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometers. The isolated compound is a white solid of 0.0082 g with a melting point of 190-192°C. The results of the identification of the phytochemical profile on the TLC plate with the Liebermen-Burchard (LB) reagent showed that the compound was a triterpenoid group. The results of the UV-Vis spectrum analysis showed maximum absorption at a wavelength of 221 nm indicating the presence of π-π* electron transitions from the unconjugated C=C bond and the results of the FTIR spectrum analysis showed the presence of OH, C-O (alcohol), C=C groups. (alkenes), C-H is aliphatic and geminal dimethyl.

Abstract

The bay plant (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.) is a member of the myrtaceae family. The most widely used part of the bay plant is the bay leaf. The leaves of this plant are often used as traditional medicine to treat gout, diarrhea, diabetes, and high blood pressure. This study aims to isolate and determine the characteristics of triterpenoid compounds from ethyl acetate extract of bay leaves. Isolation was carried out by column chromatography method with SGP (Step Gradient Polarity) elution system, then the isolated compound was purified by recrystallization method and obtained in the form of white crystals weighing 0.0188 g. TLC results showed a single purple spot after being treated with Liebermann Buschard reagent with a melting point range of 137-139 oC. The results of the UV spectrum data showed no conjugated double bonds and the results of the FTIR spectrum data showed the presence of hydroxyl groups, C-O alcohols, C-H alkanes, C=C alkenes, geminal dimethyl which are characteristic of triterpenoid compounds. Cytotoxic activity testing was carried out using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method.  Ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract had strong cytotoxic activity with LC50 values 316.23 mg/L and 234.42 mg/L respectively, while the hexane extract was weak with an LC50 value of 1148.15 mg/L.

Abstract

Sambung nyawa (Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr) is one of the plants used in traditional medicine. This has life-saving properties such as preventing polyps, dysentery, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. In this study, the secondary metabolite content and antioxidant activity of sambung nyawa leaf extract were tested and its antioxidant activity. The extraction process was carried out by multilevel maceration using three different solvents, starting with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Secondary metabolite content test results showed that ironwood leaves contain flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. The result of the antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method (1,1-Difenil-2- pikrilhidrazil) showed that the methanol extract showed very strong activity with an IC50 value of 15,01 mg/L, while the ethyl acetate showed moderate antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 147,04 mg/L, and the hexane extract showed antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 361,66 mg/L.
