Abstract

Doubtlessly, wood identification is critically important for a number of sectors, including government organizations, the wooden-based industry, museums, law enforcement, and scientists working in botany, ecology, forestry, and wood technology. Unfortunately, most wood species listed as “the least-known species” lack essential knowledge or their anatomical features and basic properties to promote their usage. This research aimed to investigate the anatomical characteristics and fiber quality of the least-known timber species of Apocynaceae family, which are authentic wood collection from Xylarium Bogoriense, namely, Ervatamia sphaerocarpa, E. aurantiaca, Kopsia flavida, Lepiniopsis ternatensis, Plumeria acuminata, P. rubra, and Voacanga foetida. Wood samples have indistinct growth ring boundaries, diffuse-porous vessels in diagonal and/or radial pattern, vessels in radial multiples of 4 or more cells, simple perforation plate, alternate intervessel pits; distinct borders of vessel-ray pits, similar with those of intervessel pits in size and shape throughout the ray cell, and septate fibers with simple pits to minutely bordered pits which are common in radial and tangential walls. Based on the fiber length and the derived values of fiber dimension, some species are classified into Quality Class II and III, and the rest of them are classified into Quality Class II or III for pulp and paper manufacturing. Based on general characteristics, commonly Apocynaceae can be used as handicrafts raw material. Based on the fiber quality, some species which are classified into Quality Class II, are predicted to have potential as pulp and paper material with medium quality.

Abstract

Binuang bini (Octomeles sumatrana) and binuang laki (Duabanga moluccana) are fast growing species that have the potential to be developed as engineered wood products. However, previous studies have shown that both wood species have high contact angle values due to the extractive content and the high acidity. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of hot water extraction (HWE) pretreatment to eliminate these limiting factors. The results proved that HWE pretreatment statistically significantly decreased the contact angle of binuang bini wood but not for binuang laki wood. HWE pretreatment resulted in a decrease in the levels of hot water-soluble extractive content and degradation of other wood chemical components. The different effectiveness of HWE pretreatment on binuang bini and binuang laki wood on improving the contact angle is influenced by differences in the quantity and quality of extractive substances as well as differences in the anatomical structure characteristics of these species.

Abstract

AbstractPeniti Dalam I village possesses significant potential in coconut resources; however, its utilization remains limited to the sale of raw materials, resulting in suboptimal economic value for the local community. This issue is primarily attributed to a lack of knowledge and technical skills regarding value-added coconut processing. To address this, a community servie initiative was conducted to enhance the expertise of local partners in producing Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as a viable processing alternative. The program targeted 20 participants from the PKK and Posyandu women’s groups. The metodology involved outreach, participatory training through tutorials and dicussions, and technical assistance, with evaluation conducted via questionnaires and direct observation. The results indicate that participants successfully mastered the stages of VCO production using natural fermentation and demonstrated a readiness for independent implementation. This activity has positively contributed to community capacity building and opened new avenues for household-based enterprises centered on processed coconut products. Keywords: economic added value; coconut processing; community empowerment; virgin coconut oil
