Abstract

AbstrakSudut kontak dan keterbasahan dinamis penting diketahui untuk menganalisis keteguhan rekat. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui sudut kontak dan keterbasahan dinamis kayu samama pada berbagai pengerjaan kayu. Metode yang digunakan adalah meneteskan air destilata, perekat UF dan isosianat dengan ukuran tertentu pada permukaan kayu hasil gergaji dan hasil mesin kupas. Permukaan kayu gergajian yang ditetesi oleh cairan adalah permukaan radial, tangensial dan permukaan yang membentuk sudut 45° antara radial dan tangensial. Sementara itu permukaan finir hasil pengupasan adalah permukaan tight dan loose. Kayu gergajian maupun finir yang dianalisis pada penelitian ini, keduanya diambil dari bagian juvenil dan dewasa. Keterbasahan dinamis dianalisis menggunakan model SD. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa porositas permukaan bahan berpengaruh terhadap keterbasahan kayu samama oleh cairan. Permukaan tangensial memiliki sifat yang lebih mudah mengalami keterbasahan dibandingkan dengan permukaan radial maupun TR (permukaan antara radial dan tangensial) sementara bagian juvenil memiliki tingkat keterbasahan lebih baik dibandingkan dewasanya. Finir samama memiliki tingkat keterbasahan setara dengan permukaan TR kayu samama dimana bagian juvenil finir memiliki laju keterbasahan yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan finir dewasa. Disamping itu, bagian loose finir lebih cepat terbasahi oleh cairan dibandingkan bagian tight.AbstractContact angle and dynamic wettability is important in determining bonding strength, therefore, this study addressed contact angle and dynamic wettability of samama wood in various woodworking. Method used in the study was by dripping distill water, UF and isocyanate adhesives in particular size on the surface of wood processed by circular saw and peeling machine. The surfaces of sawn wood which dripped by those liquids were radial, tangential, and surface which made a 45° angle between radial and tangential. Meanwhile the tested surfaces of peeled-veneer were tight and loose surfaces. Both sawn wood and veneer in this study were taken from juvenile and mature part of the samama wood. Dynamic wettability was analyzed using SD model. The results showed that porosity of the surface significantly affected the wettability of samama wood by liquid. The profile of tangential surface made it had a better wettability than radial and TR (i.e. surface between radial and tangential) surfaces. Meanwhile, juvenile part showed better wettability than the mature one. The samama veneer had equal wettability with TR surface of sawn wood in which the juvenile one showed better wettability than the mature veneer. Further, it was noticed that loose surface of the veneer was wetted faster than the tight one.

Abstract

Cabbage flowers a vegetable that comes from sub tropical regions.  Temperature range for growth of cabbage flowers that minimum and maximum 15.5 to 18 0C 24 0C, so plants can grow cabbage flowers in lowland and highland. Oxic Dystrudepts was characterized by a high level of soil acidity, nutrient and organic matter is low. One way to increase growth and yield of cabbage flowers crop production by performing fertilization.  Poultry manure used in this study is chicken manure. This study aimed to study the effect of poultry manure on the growth and yield of cabbage flowers (Brassica oleracea var. Bathytis L. ) in Oxic Dystrudepts Lembantongoa.  The research was conducted on October 2014 until February 2015, in the Greenhouse of Agriculture Faculty, Tadulako University, Palu. The soil and the plant analysis were carried out in the Laboratory of Soil Science, Agriculture Faculty, Tadulako University, Palu. The soil for research were taken from Lembantongoa village, Palolo district, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. The researcher applied a random block design and used chicken cage fertilizer as a treatment with seven levels of dose, namely: control, 10t ha-1, 15t ha-1, 20t ha-1, 25t ha-1, 30t ha-1, 35t ha-1. The data were analyzed based on the design used and followed by HSD 5% test. Cabbage flowers plant growth (height , number of leaves , leaf area , chlorophyll , fresh weight of flower/crop, and plant dry weight) was significantly affected by the dose of poultry manure.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tree spacing or planting distance on tree growth characteristic and several physical and mechanical properties of fast growing teak (Tectona grandis) wood from a plantation area in West Java. Growth characteristics of all trees within the plot of each planting distance were evaluated, while physical-mechanical properties were represented by 6 selected trees of each planting distance. The results showed that growth characteristics were significantly influenced by tree spacing, while wood properties were not. The wider spacing (3 by 3 m) tends to produce bigger stem diameter, but shorter tree height, shorter clear bole height, and greater branches. Although tree spacing of 3 by 3 m is more favored by the farmers since it provides more space for agroforestry activity, such spacing is not recommended to be applied in order to produce the best timber from teak plantation.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze machining performance (characteristic and quality), as well as bonding quality of densified wood, and then compared to those of un-treated (control) wood and boron-treated wood. Characteristic and quality of machining properties were directly evaluated by qualified technician during processing, while bonding quality was evaluated through its shear strength. The results showed that densification employed was able to improve machining performance and bonding quality of the 5-year-old faster-grown teakwood. Compared to control wood and boron-treated wood, machining performances of densified teakwood are greater, while bonding quality increased by 18.79 and 26.86%, respectively. The surface became much fine and even, and has similar colour to older teakwood. Analysis hierarchy process (AHP) proves that densified teakwood is the best raw material for furniture manufacturing since its machining performances, appearance, colour, and bonding quality are better either than control wood or boron-treated wood. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze anatomical characteristics, fiber morphology, and several important physical properties of nyatoh (Palaquium lanceolatum), pisang putih (Sindora walichii), and sepetir (Mezzettia leptopoda) wood from North Kalimantan in order to support the proper utilization of each wood species. All parameters were analyzed using their standard procedures. Results showed that anatomical characteristics of nyatoh wood are the vessels predominantly are in radial multiples and contained tyloses, ray parenchyma is mostly uniseriate and even, while axial parenchyma is in narrow tangential line with irregularly spaced. For pisang putih wood, the vessels are exclusively solitary, ray parenchyma of two distinct sizes, while axial parenchyma are in continuous tangential bands with irregularly spaced. In case of sepetir wood, the vessel is in radial and diagonal patterns, rays tend to have two different sizes, axial parenchyma is vasicentric to aliform, and has the axial resin canals in continuous tangential bands. Average values of fiber length and fiber wall thickness are 1904 and 3.61 µm (nyatoh), 1708 and 4.51 µm (pisang putih), and 1337 and 3.39 µm (sepetir), respectively; while the mean values of specific gravity and T/R-ratio are 0.42 and 1.41 (nyatoh), 0.37 and 2.34 (pisang putih), and 0.32 and 1.40 (sepetir), respectively. Nyatoh wood is categorized as the Strength Class of III, while pisang putih and sepetir woods are categorized as the Strength Class of IV. Compared to pisang putih and sepetir woods, nyatoh wood is more potential for pulp, paper, and furniture manufacturing. Abstract

The present study clarified the relationship between the growth and wood properties of 54-year-old Agathis sp. trees planted in Indonesia. Stem diameter, pilodyn penetration, and stress-wave velocity (SWV) were measured for all trees (35 trees) in a plot (30  30 m) located almost at the center of a stand. Based on the mean stem diameter, 10 standard trees in a plot were selected for measuring the basic density (BD) and compressive strength parallel to grain (CS). Core samples (5 mm in diameter) were collected from the 10 selected trees to determine BD and CS. The mean stem diameter, pilodyn penetration and SWV in the plot were 40.2  11.3 cm, 23.4  2.1 cm, and 3.85  0.43 km/s, respectively. No  significant correlation coefficeint (r = -0.327, no significance at 5% level) was obtained between stem diameter and SWV. The mean BD and CS in the 10 trees were 0.42  0.03 g/cm3  and 28.1  2.7 MPa, respectively. A significant positive  correlation was observed between BD and CS. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant difference between BD and CS values of the 10 trees, indicating that wood properties may differ among trees with the same standard growth in a stand. From these results, we concluded that wood quality improvement in this species could be achieved by selecting  trees with high density and strength in tree breeding programs.

Abstract

To obtain basic knowledge of wood properties in plantation coniferous species growing in tropical countries, the radial variation of wood properties, such as the basic density (BD) and microfibril angle of the S2 layer in tracheid (MFA), and the compressive properties were investigated in 45-year-old Agathis sp. and 32-year-old Pinus insularis growing in Indonesia. In Agathis sp., the BD showed an almost constant value from the pith to the bark. In P. insularis, the BD of heartwood clearly decreased by the extraction with organic solvent. As a result, the BD extracted with organic solvent showed a constant value up to 5 cm from the pith and then gradually increased toward the bark. In the radial variation of the MFA, the highest value was observed near the pith in both species. In the compressive property parallel to the grain, the modulus of elasticity (E) and compressive strength (s) showed an almost constant value from the pith to the bark in Agathis sp., whereas, in P. insularis, both E and s increased from the pith to the bark. In both species, the E was affected by the MFA. In addition, in Agathis sp., s was affected by the BD, while in P. insularis, it was affected by the BD extracted with organic solvent and the MFA.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat kesesuaian kayu sentang sebagai bahan baku berdasarkan tinjauan sifat dasarnya dalam hal ini anatomi, fisis, dan kimia. Metode yang digunakan dalam penentuan struktur kayu yaitu teknik maserasi dan mikrotom, sifat fisik berdasarkan standar BS-373 (1957), dan sifat kimia menggunakan standar TAPPI. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) struktur kayu: kayu sentang cocok dipergunakan sebagai bahan baku OSB karena memiliki dinding sel tipis sampai sedang, pori relatif banyak. Ini merupakan dua faktor yang berperan penting dalam hal perekatan dan proses pengempaan; (2) sifat fisik: kayu sentang memiliki BJ sedang, nilai T/R untuk kering udara dan oven masing-masing 1,25 and 1,17; serta (3) sifat kimia: kayu sentang memiliki kandungan ekstraktif sedang, kandungan selulosa tinggi dan lignin dan kadar abu sedang. Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of double shear connection strength of six types of timber in various displacement based on diameter and the number of bolts. Six types of wood used are bangkirai, punak, meranti, sengon, bintangur and kapur. Double shear connection consists of the main member (wood) and side member (steel plate) with bolts connected. The average moisture content of sengon, meranti, bintangur and bangkirai are relatively similar (about 12 %), while kapur and punak are slightly higher at around 14 %. In contrast, the average density of six wood species are greatly vary ranging from the lowest sengon 0.26 g cm-3, to the highest 0.82 g cm-3 of bangkirai wood. The total load and load per bolt on double shear connection using bolts connector are influenced by the type of wood, diameter and number of bolts. There is a strong tendency that the higher specific gravity or density of the wood makes higher total load and load per bolt on double shear connection for each displacement. In addition, an increasing number of bolts makes the total load increased. On the other hand, it decreases load per bolts for each of bolts diameter. The use of 10 pieces of 7.9 mm diameter bolts on double shear connection for almost all type of wood produces the highest average total load compared to the other bolt diameter for both displacement 1.5 mm and 5 mm. In the same connection displacement the highest load per bolt is still obtained from using 7.9 mm bolt diameter but with the use of 4 pieces of bolts for almost all types of wood with the exception for punak and bitangur showing the highest values are obtained from 6 pieces of bolts. Bangkirai wood, kapur, punak, bintangur and meranti can be used as the main member in double shear connection by using bolt with diameter 6.4 mm, 7.9 mm and 9.5 mm because of fulfilling the requirements of PKKI (1961). Abstract

Jati Plus Perhutani (JPP) adalah jati cepat tumbuh yang dikembangkan oleh Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Perum Perhutani melalui serangkaian kegiatan pemuliaan pohon. Pada umur yang sama, diameter pohon jati super ini lebih besar dibandingkan diameter pohon jati konvensional, namun kualitas pengeringan kayunya belum sepenuhnya diteliti. Tulisan ini menyajikan hasil penelitian tentang sifat dan kualitas pengeringan kayu JPP umur 5, 7 dan 9 tahun dalam kaitannya dengan sifat-sifat dasar kayu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sifat-sifat dasar kayu JPP sangat rendah. Sifat dasar kayu terutama ketebalan dinding sel, porsi kayu juvenil, persentase bagian kayu gubal-kayu teras, MFA, kadar air, kerapatan dan BJ kayu, serta tegangan pertumbuhan sangat mempengaruhi sifat dan kualitas pe- ngeringan kayunya. Kualitas pengeringan kayu JPP sampai umur 9 tahun masih tergolong rendah dan kurang memuaskan. Dibandingkan dengan kayu jati konvensional yang berdiameter sama (dari pohon yang lebih tua), sifat dan kualitas pengeringan kayu JPP masih lebih rendah. Berdasarkan kualitas pe- ngeringan dan kondisi kayunya, maka suhu minimum-maksimum yang sesuai untuk mengeringkan kayu JPP umur 5 tahun adalah 30-40°C, umur 7 tahun adalah 40-50°C, sedangkan untuk umur 9 tahun adalah 40-60°C.
