Abstract

Investigating pre-service teachers’ beliefs gives tremendous advantages for their future career development. This study was conducted in the context of elementary education. It focused on investigating the pre-service teachers’ beliefs about teaching English and how the teacher’s reflections changed their initial beliefs. We examined nineteen sophomore students who participated in community service to teach English at a public elementary school. A qualitative design was applied and reflections were carried out. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews and direct classroom observations. The result generates that many preservice teachers hold their prior beliefs about teaching from their student experience. Teaching reflections facilitate these pre-service teachers to realize their gaps in teaching skills. The finding suggests that teacher training faculty need to add more practical courses to nurture teaching skills. The findings may be useful for a larger population where English was taught as a foreign language for pre-service teachers and elementary school students. This study concludes that real teaching experience develops pre-service teachers’ professionalism. It impresses upon them that teaching needs comprehensive knowledge and skills.

Abstract

Teachers have an important role in the development of children's language at school. The study period at Early Childhood Education is an excellent opportunity to improve literacy skills when children are experiencing a sensitive language learning period. Language skills have a role in improving social aspects and developing emotional and cognitive aspects. Children aged 2-4 years go through a concrete learning period. Using storytelling teaching methods with flashcard media can create a fun learning atmosphere and encourage children to learn optimally. This study aims to look at the application of the flashcard storytelling method to the language skills of children aged 2-4 years in support of an emergent literacy program.

Abstract

This community service aims to improve the quality of informal school services in the Gunung Anyar mangrove area, Surabaya. The activities that have been carried out consist of four stages: providing materials to support teaching and learning activities, training for teaching staff, dental health training for children, and administrative training for river school volunteers. A series of events were held in September – October 2023. The Gunung Anyar Margrove River School is an informal activity held every Sunday for children in the area around Magrove. This activity was initially initiated by a resident who cares about the environment and the teachers are volunteers. These teachers have no background as teachers and have received both formal and informal training. This community service targets providing equipment for volunteers. The training results showed increased knowledge regarding introducing child psychology and creative teaching in informal schools.
