Abstract

As indigenous belief acknowledgement in Indonesia is still progressive, debatable but limitedly investigated from critical discourse analysis perspective, this research is aimed at revealing the discursive construction of indigenous belief issue in The Jakarta Post. This research focuses on analyzing indigenous belief as phenomenon, indigenous believers and government as social actor through the analysis of nomination and predication strategies. Articles published in The Jakarta Post online newspaper from 2013 - 2020 are chosen as corpus data. To analyze this research, Discourse-Historical Approach by Wodak and Meyer (2009) is used as the framework. This research also employs corpus analysis using Sketch Engine. The finding suggests that the issue centralized in the discussion of identity card and human right framed in five different periods. The use of collective proper name, anthroponym and deixis are significant to refer to indigenous believers, meanwhile institutional name, anthroponym and synecdoche are mostly used as referent for government. There is a shift of predication strategies from negative to positive when it discussed government policy on putting indigenous belief column on identity card. This research suggests that the use of corpus software as well as manual corpus screening is important to locate more detail language data.

Abstract

This study was purposely done to investigate the representation of the government in The Jakarta Post. Therefore, the research objective of this study is to reveal the representation of the government related to the draft of Criminal Code in The Jakarta Post by using Fairclough three-dimensional model. The three-dimensional model including textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice were the stages for the researchers to analyze the news. The qualitative descriptive approach was employed by the researchers as the research method. The findings of this current study showed that The Jakarta Post was on the protesters’ side and it negatively represented the government. This research can be a meaningful insight for future researchers who want to conduct a study under a critical discourse analysis theory, for readers to become more aware of reading news, and for journalists to become more aware as well in writing news.

Abstract

This study aims at revealing English representation on the business signboards in some business centers in Padang. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that helps researchers to have a thorough analysis of the data. Linguistic landscape and visual semiotics theories proposed by Landry and Bourhis, Kress and van Leeuwen, and Scollon and Scollon are applied to discuss the results. The visual semiotics theory is specified for only composition, especially given and new composition. The study finds that there are 687 data with 957 compositions of given-new, ideal-real, and center-margin information. Among them are 54 (6%) given compositions and 221 (23%) new compositions. It indicates that the business owners in Padang mostly use English as a subordinate language on the signboard. The business owners use English on the signboards to give new information to promote their stores. Hopefully, this research can give more contributions to the linguistic landscape in Padang. It also can broaden the readers’ horizons about the language in public spaces, especially the language used in business areas. Teori semiotika visual dikhususkan hanya untuk komposisi, terutama komposisi ‘given’ dan komposisi ‘new’. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa ada 687 data dengan 957 komposisi informasi yang given-new, ideal-real, dan center-margin. Diantaranya, terdapat 54 (6%) komposisi given dan 221 (23%) komposisi new.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of the English Linguistic Landscape as a potential learning medium for English as a Foreign Language (EFL)  in Padang, West Sumatra. While previous studies have described the English Linguistic Landscape in Indonesia, few have explicitly explored its pedagogical value and discursive implications for language learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzed 850 English-containing public signs across the city and surveyed 114 EFL students at Universitas Andalas regarding their perceptions of English in public spaces. We examined the signs regarding linguistic units (as the texts) and their visual positioning and relation to symbolic meaning and cultural identity. Findings reveal that English is prominently used in commercial signage, often in larger fonts and strategic positions, signaling its dominance and symbolic prestige over Indonesian. Student responses indicate generally positive attitudes, with more than 80% acknowledging that the English Linguistic Landscape contributes to vocabulary building, grammar awareness, and motivation for language learning. However, the study also notes grammatical and hybrid construction inaccuracies that may reinforce non-standard English patterns. The discussion highlights English Linguistic Landscape as a discourse resource that reflects globalization, power relations, and shifting identities in urban Indonesia. Implications suggest that the English Linguistic Landscape can be integrated into EFL pedagogy through critical analysis tasks and multimodal learning activities. Future research should expand to the digital English Linguistic Landscape and comparative contexts across Indonesian cities. This research underscores the pedagogical and sociocultural significance of the English Linguistic Landscape, though further work is needed to deepen its discourse analysis and pedagogical applications.

Abstract

One indicator of the success of education is the good quality of teachers. Permendiknas Number 16 of 2007 concerning Academic Qualification Standards and Competency of Subject Teachers states that teachers must have competencies, one of which is the competence to develop assessment instruments, both assessment of learning processes and assessment of learning outcomes. This is very important to measure the learning outcomes that have been set in the curriculum. In fact, English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Kotagajah were still lacked in compiling exam questions using HOTS criteria. Therefore, the training program to create HOTS based test for English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Kotagajah was implemented. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test conducted, it was found that there was an increase in knowledge about the preparation of HOTS-based questions by the English teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Kotagajah.
