Abstract

A simple way to find out the influence of the first language on speaking ability is to give a test in the form of a speaking test. This research uses quantitative as a research design and descriptive as a research methodology. The study took the student population of class XI IPA at Sma N 8 Jambi City in the 2021/2022 school year, and the sample was students of class XI IPA 4 and XI IPA 1 in the academic year 2021/2022. This study uses a test given to the respondents as a research instrument, and then the results of the test are assessed and analyzed. The author asks students to conduct a speaking test according to the theme that has been determined by the author. From the author's test, it was found that the scores obtained by experimental and control class students were normal. This is evidenced by the normality test conducted by the author. In addition, the average score in the experimental class was 14.07 and the average score in the control class was 14.52. Then the t test is done to see if there is an influence on the results of the author's study. The result obtained is that there are differences in scores in experimental classes and control classes.

Abstract

This study aims to find students' strategies in learning the simple past tense at tenth grade of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. In this study, this research used mixed methods and used an explanatory sequential research design. The total population of this research was the X MIPA of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling. The number of the sample were 36 students in class X MIPA 3. In collecting data, this research used questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study indicate that students in class X MIPA 3 are classified as medium in using language learning strategies with the average use of SILL is 3.15. Data analysis shows that students use all six of the categories of learning strategies; memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, metacognitive strategy is the strategy most often used by students with an average use of 3.68 or classified in the high category. From the interview results, it is known that in studying the simple past tense, students apply language learning strategies which include memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, of the six strategies, the memory strategy is the least used. Students apply these strategies in learning the simple past tense to help them overcome difficulties in learning the simple past tense and to better understand the use of the simple past tense orally and in writing.

Abstract

Reading is the process of receiving interpreting information in language from via the medium of print. The purpose of this research is to analysis reading difficulties of narrative text in online learning by using Edmodo. The objective of this research is to identify the students’ difficulties. The research conducted at SMK N 4 Jambi in academic years 2019/2020. The population of this research is tenth grade students of fashion class II. Type of the research is qualitative the data were obtained by using online interview. Overall, the result of this research is most of the students have difficulties in understanding narrative text by using Edmodo application which the students argued that the explanation of the generic structure, language feature, finding main idea of the narrative text and students’ vocabularies are limited. But the difficulties could be solved by Edmodo communication tools which the teacher and all students could make the discussion about their difficulties, especially in learning reading narrative text.Keywords: Reading difficulties, Narrative text, Online Learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine analyze some students' ability about learning English in Destorel English Club of senior high school 8 in the city of Jambi. This research is a mix method research. The data collection technique was obtained through interview and recorded. The results showed that according to students learning English is very easy to understand if students want to learn to understand it, the interest of students of senior high school 8 Jambi city in receiving learning is also supported by learning support facilities such as books, English dictionaries, and other online English dictionary sites. In addition, the assignment given by the teacher also raises student ability.  Based on the research results, it can be concluded that according to students speaking ability in speaking English is very easy. Students' difficulties in receiving learning is also supported by supporting facilities for learning English such as books and dictionaries. Teachers always use two languages to interact with their students in learning English, namely by mixing Indonesian. Students always actively ask teachers and friends about learning English that students do not know, and students do not apply English in their daily life due to lack of vocabulary and lack confidence in interacting with other people in using English.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out what are the learning style used by the students at the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 3 Jambi City. The research methodology of this study was quantitative descriptive research which involved population and sample. The total population of this research was the XI MIPA 1 students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City, which consisted of 28 students. In collecting the data, This research gave questionner as the instrument to collect the data at the class. The result of the research showed that the eleventh grade students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City learn English vocabulary in various ways. Moreover, the students with the highest percentage was found in auditory learning style (43%), then followed by visual learning style (21%), and the last kinesthetic learning style (21%). This research also found some students with multiple learning style which is visual/kinesthetic learning style (11%) and auditory/kinesthetic learning style (4%). This research concluded that students have different learning style in learning English, and they have a different way of developing their English skills in learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students' perception of using worksheet in English Online Learning at the Ninth Grade Junior High School Number 2 Jambi City. This research methodology in this study is qualitative research design whose analysis setting of the research requires in-depth observation. The subjects of this study were students of class ninth grade junior high school number 2 Jambi city, was used Purposive sampling totaling six students as participants consisting of two students from low scores, two students from minimum scores, and two students from high scores and two students with high grades, and active students who get ranks from one to six. In collecting data this research gave interviews in class. The results showed that class IX students of SMPN 2 Jambi City this researchs found some difficulties in capturing meaning in the learning process using online worksheets but can help children's success in the process of learning English online. Worksheet can be    helps teachers and students in online learning so that students can use worksheet correctly and easily in implementing the application of worksheet in online learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the reading texts provided in English textbook used in SMA N 1 Jambi City based on the criteria of reading text. The criteria are the variety, exploitability, suitability of content, the length or size, readability and authenticity of the text. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative. Specifically, the research method that used in gathering the data is content analysis method. The data were gathered by reading all of the reading texts repeatedly to identify and classify the necessary data. There are seven reading text with different variety which includes narrative, expository, speech, play script and recount text. All of these texts were also provided with reading activities which is split into three phase including pre-reading, while reading and post reading activities. These texts have different topic and theme which also found to be suitable for high schools students. The topic and theme of the text are interesting and can be referred to the other subjects in their learning. However, the length of the texts are seems to be not suitable for high school students. Most of the texts were considered to be more suitable for students in lower level. The texts also met the readability criteria since the topic are familiar to the students and there is no over-detailed or oversimplified explanation within. Finally, the results also show that the texts are met the authenticity criteria, which means most of them are taken from authentic sources that relevant to the topic. Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the components in speaking ability. This component plays very important role in communication, because by pronouncing the English words correctly students are able to avoid misunderstanding when they are speaking, therefore to be able to say English words fluently and correctly, the students should have good mastery in pronunciation especially in pronouncing English palatal alveolar fricative and affricative consonant sounds. This research is aimed at describing students” ability to pronounce English palatal alveolar fricative and affricative consonants (∫ and t∫) and find out in which position (initial, medial, and final) are the most difficult to pronounce. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative method approach. This research was conducted Junior High School Number 17 Kota Jambi in January 2022. in conducting this research, this research administered the pronunciation test one time, the. The population of this research was the ninth-grade students at SMPN 17 Jambi City in academic year 2021-2022, the total number of them were 340 students. As the sample was the ninth-grade students, they consist of 10 students. This research used purposive sampling technique in taking the sample if this research. The result of this research showed that on the test there were 4 students belong to very good categories, 2 student belongs to good categories, 3 students belong to fair categories, 1 student belongs to weak category and none of the student belong to poor category. the ability of the students in pronouncing the English palatal alveolar fricative (∫) and (t∫) affricative consonant was 78%, this is categorized as good. The students” ability in pronouncing sound (∫) belongs to very good category (85%) and sound (t∫) belongs to good category (73%)

Abstract

The objective of the research entitled The Students’ Perception of Using Cake Application for Speaking Skills at the First Grade Students’ of SMAN 1 Jambi this research aim to investigate students’ perception of Using Cake Application for Speaking Skill in findings and discussions, the researcher presents several items of conclusion is follows: The problems of the research is what are students’ perceptions of using Cake application for speaking skills at the first grade of SMA N 1 Jambi. The researcher uses a qualitative research with the use of phenomenology approach. Perception of students in first grade SMAN 1 Kota Jambi which the researcher found in-depth interviews and document analysis. Students’ perception of using Cake Application is very well. This is evident from the students who know what features are available in the cake application which have different functions for speaking skills. By knowing the function of each feature, it proves that students learn and get the benefits and positive effects of the cake application. Lastly students’ perception of using Cake Application for speaking skills is a great application for learning English because English is an international language and learning English can also broaden students’ knowledge of the Indonesian languages than they have learn.Key words: Students’ Perception, Cake Application.
