Abstract

This study aims to find out what are the students' problems in using English pronouns in using personal and possessive pronouns at SMP Negeri 15 Jambi. In this study, this research used qualitative research. The subjects of this study were class VIIG students of SMP Negeri 15 Jambi in the academic year 2021/2022. All problems in the use of pronouns have been categorized and identified, namely subject, object, possessive adjective, and possessive pronoun. In simple terms, the students face more problems in using object pronouns. This can be seen from the percentage results where the problem of using object pronouns is 35.2%, questions are answered incorrectly. Meanwhile, at least students face problems in using possessive pronouns by 14.4%.  The result of this research found that the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Jambi mostly face the problem of using object pronouns, which is the most difficult thing for students because they do not really understand how to use object pronouns.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what vowel and consonant sound are difficult to be pronounced by the students at the second semester class A2 of Batanghari University. This research is done in the form of sound recording. It employed a qualitative method that consisted of two kinds of test, there were text that consisted one paragraph and word list that include 86 items. The subject of the research was the second semester class of Batanghari University in academic year 2020 namely class A2 that consisted of 17 students. The data were collected through text and word list, and were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research showed that the students at second semester class A2 of Batanghari University got some English vowel and consonant difficult to pronounce. The result showed that, the English vowel sound which difficult to pronounce by the students are: /ɪ/, /e/, /ɒ/, /˄/, /Ʊ/, /Ȝ:/, /ə/, /i:/, /u:/, /ɔ:/, /eə/, /eɪ/, /əƱ/, /aƱ/, /ɔɪ/, /ɪə/, /eə/ and /Ʊə/. There were ninety occurances of errors in pronouncing vowels made by the students by listen their sound record. And the English consonant sound which difficult to pronounce by the students are: /k/, /tʃ/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /h/, /d/, /dȜ/, /v/, /Ȝ/, /m/, /n/, /ƞ/ and /w/. It was known that there were thirthy-eight occurances of error in pronouncing consonants made by the students. The higher percentage in symbol /ɪ/ with 13,28%, the errors happened in seventeen times. And the lower percentage is 0,78%, the errors happened in once in each symbol. It seen in symbol /Ȝ:/, /eə/, /eɪ/, /ɪə/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /d/, /Ȝ/, and /w/. The students still make errors that caused by their first language or their mothertongue, language background of the students and learning process.Key Words: Error Analysis, Pronunciation, English Vowels and Consonants

Abstract

This study aims to find out the difficulties on online learning in speaking skill.  The researcher used a descriptive qualitative design by taking the sample used simple random sampling and then obtained XII Science 5 with the total number of 36 students, unfortunately three students did not fill the online questionnaires. Thus, there were 33 students as a sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used an online questionnaire. The result of this study showed the students’ difficulties on online learning in speaking skill were: Pronouncing problems 66.6%, students having difficulty interacting with others 63.6%, limited vocabulary 57.5%, lack of grammar 54.5%, poor internet connection 48,4%, students have not enough understanding to explore and express their ideas 33.3%, furthermore the students lack of fluency 21.2%.Keywords: Online learning, Online questionnaires, Speaking difficulties.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not there was any correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability of English language learners. The problem of this study referred to the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability. The study was conducted at the A2 Class of Second Semester Students of English Education Study Program Faculty at Batanghari University Jambi. The population of the study was 15 active students who were studying as the member of a2 class on the second semester students of English Education Study Program Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Batanghari University Jambi in academic year 2019/2020. The sample of this study was all of the A2 class of the second semester students which consist of 15 students with 4 male and 11 female students. The types of the data were quantitative. The data were obtained by using self-confidence questionnaire and speaking test and analyzed by using manual correlation analysis with Pearson Product-Moment formula. Furthermore, it was revealed that r-obtained was (.73) which the researcher concluded that the H0was rejected and H1was accepted. The result concluded that there was a correlation between self-confidence and the speaking ability of the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Batanghari University Jambi.Keywords: Self-confidence, Speaking Ability.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out what are the learning style used by the students at the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 3 Jambi City. The research methodology of this study was quantitative descriptive research which involved population and sample. The total population of this research was the XI MIPA 1 students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City, which consisted of 28 students. In collecting the data, This research gave questionner as the instrument to collect the data at the class. The result of the research showed that the eleventh grade students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City learn English vocabulary in various ways. Moreover, the students with the highest percentage was found in auditory learning style (43%), then followed by visual learning style (21%), and the last kinesthetic learning style (21%). This research also found some students with multiple learning style which is visual/kinesthetic learning style (11%) and auditory/kinesthetic learning style (4%). This research concluded that students have different learning style in learning English, and they have a different way of developing their English skills in learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analize students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text. The problem of this research is students’ difficulties in generic structure, language feature, lack of vocabulary and arranging sentences in writing descriptive text. The objective of this research is to identify the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text. The research conducted at SMK Negeri 4 Jambi in academic years 2019/2020. The population of this research is tenth grade student of fashion class IV. The sample is all of the fashion class IV at the tenth grade which the total number of students are 33 female students. The type of the research is qualitative descriptive. The data were obtained by using online questionnaire by using google forms. Overall, the result of this research is 60% students have difficulties on language feature. While, 30% students have difficulties in generic structure which is as same as the students are who have limited vocabulary in writing descriptive text. Moreover, the biggest percentages which are majority of students have difficulties on arranging sentences to be paragraph.Keywords: An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties of Writing Descriptive Text.

Abstract

This study aims to identify whether students make errors and find the types of errors made by students in class X MIPA 1 of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. This research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is X MIPA 1 of Senior High School 1 Jambi City academic year 2021/2022. The data collected through the students' writing test. The results of this study indicate that there are errors made by students in the use of the past tense. All errors in using the past tense have been categorized and identified, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The findings of this study indicated that there were 102 total errors made by students which are classified into four categories based on the surface strategy taxonomy. There are 14 omission errors, 27 addition errors, 49 forming errors, and 12 sorting errors. The students made a dominant error in misformation. This can be seen from the results of the percentage where the wrong formation is 48.04%, then followed by stacking errors of 11.76%, omissions of 13.73, and addition errors of 26.47%. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the students of class X MIPA 1 SMAN 1 Jambi City made the most types of errors, namely misformation. This misformation error is the most difficult for students because they do not really understand the movement of verbs and the infinitive to the past tense. Students need to practice more in writing narrative texts so that they understand the use of simple past tense and the students can make good narrative texts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions about learning English in the twelfth grade of senior high school 8 in the city of Jambi. This research is a qualitative phenomenological research. The data collection technique was obtained through interviews. The results showed that according to students learning English is very easy to understand if students want to learn to understand it, the interest of students of SMAN 8 Jambi city in receiving learning is also supported by learning support facilities such as books, English dictionaries, and other online English dictionary sites. In addition, the assignment given by the teacher also raises student perceptions. Good teacher interaction in delivering learning can also lead to student perceptions. In this case the teachers at SMAN 8 Kota Jambi always use two languages to interact with their students. Good interaction between students and teachers is also supported by student activities. In this case, students of SMAN 8 Jambi City are always actively asking their teachers and friends about learning English. As for its application in everyday life, due to the lack of students 'ability in English pronunciation, and the lack of students' vocabulary regarding English learning, students lack confidence to interact with other people in using English. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that according to students learning English is very easy. Students' interest in receiving learning is also supported by supporting facilities for learning English such as books and dictionaries. Teachers always use two languages to interact with their students in learning English, namely by mixing Indonesian. Students always actively ask teachers and friends about learning English that students do not know, and students do not apply English in their daily life due to lack of vocabulary and lack confidence in interacting with other people in using English.Keywords: Students' Perception, Studying English

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether there is any effect in using note- taking method toward listening ability at second semester at English language education faculty of teacher training and education University of Batanghari Jambi. The researcher methodology of this research was an experimental research. Which conducted the experiment class and control class. The population of the research was the second semester at English language education faculty of teacher training and education of students was 30 students consist of two classes. The experiment class (X) was 15 students and control class (Y) was 15 students as samples. The researcher gave listening test to collected data. There were two test, pretest and posttest. The formula that was used analyze the data was used T-test. The researcher found thet the pretest mean of experiment class was 58.67 and posttest mean was 79.33. the pretest mean of control class 52 and posttest mean was 68. It was found tobservation =2.323, where is ttable was 2.048 for 5%. The tobservation higher than the ttable (2.323 >2.048), so Ha was accepted while H0 was rejected. It means that there was significant effect of Note-taking method toward listening ability at second semester at English language education faculty of teacher training and education University of Batanghari Jambi.Keyword: Listening Ability, Note-taking Method.

Abstract

The aims of the study were to find out the strengths of reading materials in students’ worksheet: Talk Active 2 used at Second Grade of SMA N 9 Kota Jambi meet the criteria of good learning materials. Those criteria are: (1) The materials make clear the link between the classroom and the wider world (2) The materials foster independent learning (3) The materials focus the learner on the the opening process (4) The materials are readily available. The student worksheet was written by Fx. Sukristiono, Nursahid, Sudarso, and published by Yudhistira. The research is expected to give insights of understanding the quality of reading materials. This study was designed as a documentary analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research in which the result would be described in the form of words. The data were collected from the reading section in the students’ worksheet. As supplementary tools of the instrument, forms of checklist were used during the research analysis. The researcher concluded that most of students easy to understand about content of the text but, they still have difficulty in understand the reading materials about definitions, generic structures and functions of each text. Because, most of the texts only present the example of each text. The students need the worksheet should be clearer in reading materials. Not only provide a lot of exercise but also the clear explanations about the definitions, generic structure, purpose, language features and usage of tenses.The result of identified reading materials in students’ worksheet shows some strengths, they are; 1) Common vocabulary for second grade of senior high school, 2) Each text types in students’ worksheet has more than one text, 3) There are learning materials in students’ worksheet.Key Words: Strengths, Reading Materials, Students’ Worksheet.
