Abstract

This research was done to find the effect of scientific approach toward students’ writing achievement at tenth grade of SMA N 8 Kota Jambi Academic Year 2019/2020. The researcher used a quantitative method and quasi-experimental design as the research methodology with simple random sampling. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is any significant effect or not of scientific approach toward students’ writing achievement. The sample of this research was the tenth of science grade students at SMA N 8 Kota Jambi. The instrument of this research was tests. This study involved 56 students of the tenth grade students at SMA N 8 Kota Jambi academic year 2019/2020 as the object of the study and divided into two classes. Students’ writing achievement is effect after treatment using scientific approach learning method which is proven with students writing achievement higher than before treatment. The average pre-test control class 48,6 and post-test control class 78,8. Average pre-test experimental class 53,5 and post-test 90,5.  Using scientific approach in teaching writing descriptive text makes learning activity more effective and students can well understand learning material in treatment process. Thus the alternative hypothesis is accepted, the value of t-test higher than the value of t-table (3,93>2,004). Based on the finding above, it can be concluded that using scientific approach as learning method has significant effect of students writing achievement at tenth grade students of SMA N 8 Kota Jambi.Key Words: Effect, Writing Achievement, Scientific Approach.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 8 Jambi. This research took this title to find out what the student's lack of understanding the writing analytical exposition text and it is needed to know students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text as a learning tool to evaluate the learning process during pandemic covid-19. This research has 19 respondents and the methodology of this research is quantitative research. This study chose to research SMAN 8 Jambi because wanted to know students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text. In this research, there are three indicators of writing analytical exposition text were a thesis, argument, and reiteration. The student has the writing test based on the topic by This research and writes it with three indicators of analytical exposition text. From the result, This research found that there were 7 or 36,8% of the students who got a very good and good score. It means that there were students who got a standardized score from their test. 2 or 10,6% is for the students who got a fair score. And the last, 3 or 15,8% for the students who got the poor score. It means that there were students who suggest retaking or considered failing the test.

Abstract

This study aims to find students' strategies in learning the simple past tense at tenth grade of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. In this study, this research used mixed methods and used an explanatory sequential research design. The total population of this research was the X MIPA of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling. The number of the sample were 36 students in class X MIPA 3. In collecting data, this research used questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study indicate that students in class X MIPA 3 are classified as medium in using language learning strategies with the average use of SILL is 3.15. Data analysis shows that students use all six of the categories of learning strategies; memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, metacognitive strategy is the strategy most often used by students with an average use of 3.68 or classified in the high category. From the interview results, it is known that in studying the simple past tense, students apply language learning strategies which include memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, of the six strategies, the memory strategy is the least used. Students apply these strategies in learning the simple past tense to help them overcome difficulties in learning the simple past tense and to better understand the use of the simple past tense orally and in writing.

Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing students' speaking skills, at ninth grade in Junior High School 2 Jambi City. This research was designed using descriptive quantitative research methods. The population of this study was the ninth-grade students at Junior High School 2 Jambi City, and the sample was grade IX D students. This research uses a test as a research instrument. Then the test results are assessed and. The test used is an oral test with paired dialogue. The dialogue is made with the theme of "family" which is determined by This Research. The learning method through dialogue between friends was chosen because This Research saw students in one class often communicating verbally with their classmates to avoid embarrassment and fear so that students dared to express their opinions to their classmates. Thus, this courage will encourage students to do something, including the willingness to speak in English. The highest average test score is in the vocabulary component, which is 2,5 which means it is still "Poor." While the lowest test average value is found in the pronunciation component, namely 1,43 which means "very poor." The average test scores in the other four components are also in the "Poor" category, with the average grammar scores is 2,43, fluency 1,75, comprehension 2,12 and task 1,93. The average value explains that the speaking skill of students in grade ninth, especially in class IX D at Junior High School 2 Jambi City, is still classified as "Poor."

Abstract

The ability of students to understand the learning material is important. When students are able to understand the material given by the teacher, then they can apply the knowledge theoretically or in action. A simple way to check students' understanding or ability is through written assessments and student skills. This research was appointed to find out how far the students' ability in understanding grammar, in this case is the Simple Future Tense. This study uses quantitative as a research design and descriptive as research methodology. This study took a population of tenth graders at SMA 3 Jambi City in the 2021/2022 academic year and the sample was students in class X MIPA 6 in the 2021/2022 academic year. This study uses a test given to the respondents as a research instrument, then the results of the test are assessed and analyzed. The average value of the test obtained is 56.27. On the other hand, the value of the standard deviation obtained is 33.017. As a result, 11 respondents from the sample received the predicate "very good". 9 respondents received the “poor” predicate, followed by 5 respondents received the “very poor” predicate. 3 respondents received the predicate "good" and 2 respondents received the predicate "moderate". However, it should be noted that many errors occurred in the second part of the test where many of the respondents made a mistake in arranging one complete sentence with a percentage of 57.78% incorrect answers. This is inversely proportional to the test in the multiple-choice section, where the percentage of correct answers reaches 77.33%. In addition, although 11 respondents received a very good predicate, the collective average value shown is not a satisfactory result and is still categorized as "moderate". The difference between the mean and standard deviation shows that the data obtained are heterogeneous with most of them being below the sample mean.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out what is the motivation of students in terms of speaking skills in class X SMKN 1 Jambi City. This study uses quantitative methods and data collection is done by distributing questionnaires to students. The subjects of this study were 31 students of class X SMKN 1 Jambi City. The results of this study indicate that there are two student motivations in speaking skills, namely intrinsic motivation, namely motivation to be active or not need to be stimulated from outside because everyone has the urge to do something and extrinsic motivation, namely motivation that is motivational. lively and functional. with external stimuli. Thus, from the results of observations and questionnaires, this research concluded that students' speaking skills were caused by intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the types of communication strategies used by English teachers in the teaching and learning process and to explain the reasons for using these strategies at Junior High School Number 17 Jambi City in the 2021/2022 academic year. This study used qualitative research and data analysis was carried out by classroom observations and interviews with English teachers. The subjects of this study were four English teachers at Junior High School Number 17 Jambi City, using total sampling. The results of this study indicate that there are two approach communication strategies used by teachers in the teaching and learning process of English, namely two-way communication is the most widely used strategy by teachers in the classroom and one teacher uses two-way communication and also transactional communication in the learning process. learn to teach it. Thus, from the results of observations and interviews, this research concluded that teachers often use various communication strategies in the teaching and learning process of English so that students understand the lesson more easily.
