Abstract

The theological debate in Aceh in the 17th century, particularly the accusations of heresy and infidelity directed by Nūr al-Dīn al-Rānīrī against the Wujudiyah group, reflected the tension between shariah, sufism, and creed. This issue is relevant to revisit because it is not only an essential part of the intellectual history of Islam in the archipelago, but also has strong resonance in contemporary takfīr discourse that impacts the religious practices and socio-legal order of Muslims. This study aims to analyse al-Rānīrī's accusations through the parameters of shariah, particularly in relation to shaṭaḥāt (ecstatic expressions), while also examining its significance in modern debates regarding the limits of faith and the practice of excommunication. Using a literature review method and al-Fatḥ al-Mubīn as the primary source, this study found that al-Rānīrī's verdict was based on the assumption that Wujudiyah rejected the obligations of prayer and fasting. However, a textual analysis of Hamzah Fansuri's thought showed that what is meant was only the condition of Sufis in a state of unconsciousness, which in fiqh is considered a matter of khilafiah (disagreement). Therefore, the accusations of bid'ah and kufr do not have sufficient legal legitimacy. This finding confirms that the discourse of takfīr is not only a historical problem, but also has significant socio-legal implications in contemporary times, both through institutional fatwas and the narratives of transnational groups that have the potential to give rise to stigmatisation and social conflict.

Abstract

The arrival of Islam into the lands below the winds, the terminology used to designate the Malay-Indonesian world or the entire South East Asia, was inseparable from the influence of Māturidīyya and Ashāʿira in kalām. This influence was reflected in the translation works or the commentaries upon ʿAqāʾid al-Nasafī of Imam al-Nasafī in the seventeenth century. The eighteenth century and onwards also saw a rapid appearance of the translations, commentaries,ḥāshiya, and taʿlīq of Umm al-Barāhīn of Imam al-Sanūsī. In Jambi, in the early twentieth century, Tuan Guru Abdul Jalil synthesized the worldview of kalam of al-Māturidīyya and Ashāʿira in his work, Minhāj al-Umniyya fī Bayān ʿAqīdāt al-Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jamāʿā. The result of his endeavor was an epistemology of kalām that was established upon the classical intellectual legacy of Islam. Amid the hegemony of the Western epistemology on the general modern epistemology and, specifically, that of Islam, this article attempts to discuss the epistemology of Tuan Guru Abdul Jalil in order to answer the bewilderment of the modern epistemology. After analyzing the work of Tuan Guru Abdul Jalil along with other relevant results, this article shows that the epistemology of Tuan Guru Abdul Jalil is powerfully relevant in the current debates about epistemology.

Abstract

The discourse concerning whether the Qur'an possesses thematic unity has persisted as a subject of prolonged debate throughout history up to the present day. While the majority acknowledges this unity, a minority rejects it. These contrasting perspectives bear significant implications for the methodology of tafsīr al-mawḍū'ī (thematic exegesis): namely, the robustness or fragility of this method. Consequently, this paper examines the historical discourse on Qur'anic thematic unity, contextualizing it with the methodology and urgency of tafsīr al-mawḍū'ī in the modern context to strengthen the foundations of this method. After applying the principles of literature review utilizing historical analysis, this study demonstrates that the discourse on Qur'anic thematic unity falls under the terms naẓm (coherence), siyāq (context), and munāsabah (correlation) in 'ulūm al-qur'ān (Qur'anic sciences), as well as the theory of istiqrā' (induction) in uṣūl al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), all of which are relevant as analytical tools for tafsīr al-mawḍū'ī. Thus, this paper has implications for strengthening the arguments of the group that accepts the unity of meaning in the Qur'an while simultaneously reinforcing the methodological foundations of tafsīr al-mawḍū'ī.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines how Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) customary leaders classify illness, implement besesandingon and melangun in response to perceived epidemic threats, and integrate spiritual rituals with plant-based healing. It also interprets the relational logic connecting these practices through Gabriel Marcel’s philosophy of intersubjectivity. Methods: The study employed a qualitative mini-ethnographic case study conducted from September to November 2020 in the Air Hitam and Kejasung SAD communities, located near Bukit Duabelas National Park in Jambi, Indonesia. Data were obtained from seven key customary leaders and three supplementary participants through participant observation, unstructured and joint interviews, group conversations, and contemporaneous field notes. The data were analyzed manually using open and focused thematic coding. Findings: Three interconnected dimensions were identified. First, SAD diagnosis combined bodily symptoms with customary conduct, contact with outsiders, ecological signs, and spiritual relations. Second, besesandingon regulated localized risks through distancing, temporary separation, indirect communication, and customary authorization, whereas melangun involved broader residential relocation associated with death, misfortune, or communal danger. Third, medicinal plants were embedded within basale/bedeki, guidance from Badewo, observance of pantangaon, family participation, and access to Tanah Gedong Obat. These findings indicate that diagnosis, prevention, and healing were organized through a relational rather than individually centered logic. Research implications: Health engagement with SAD communities should involve recognized customary authorities and respect community protocols governing access, ritual knowledge, and ecological resources. The findings are ethnographic and do not establish botanical, clinical, or epidemiological effectiveness. Originality/value: This study integrates SAD disease cosmology, epidemic-response practices, and ritual–herbal healing within a single analytical framework. Marcel’s concept of esse est co-esse is used to clarify their relational coherence without equating SAD cosmology with Western philosophical categories.
