Abstract

A good conversation is one that has rules. According to Grace's theory (1975), there are four rules of conversation, namely, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner. In fact, Generation Z often ignores these rules when having conversations. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of maxims violated by Generation Z on WhatsApp. This study used qualitative research methods. The selected participants were Generation Z, namely five students of the English Education Department class of 2020 C. The reason for selecting these participants was because, currently, the majority of Generation Z is at the tertiary level. Document analysis and content analysis were used as data collection techniques. Condensing, presenting the data, and drawing conclusions are all parts of the data analysis process. The result is that the majority of Generation Z violates all types of maxims, and the most dominant is the maxim of relation. In conclusion, even though Generation Z has learned the rules of conversation, the fact is that in carrying out conversations, Generation Z does not apply the existing rules, so conversations become ineffective.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of speech acts within communication processes, with a focus on Searle"™s classification of illocutionary acts into five categories: assertive, referential, commissive, expressive, and declarative. It aims to provide a descriptive overview of illocutionary acts in the "Kos Mas Adam" WhatsApp group and identify their prevalence. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data analysis utilized heuristic analysis techniques. The study reveals various illocutionary speech acts in the group discussions, with assertive speech being the most common (9 data), followed by expressive (12 data) and directive (4 data). Notably, commissive speech is scarce, with only one instance, and declarative with two. These findings underscore the uneven distribution of illocutionary acts within the WhatsApp group "Kos Mas Adam", with implications for understanding online discourse dynamics. Future research may explore strategies for promoting a more balanced use of illocutionary speech acts in online group interactions.

Abstract

In education, teacher teaching style is vital in influencing students’ learning interests. Teaching style involves teachers’ approach and methods to deliver material, interact with students, and create a conducive classroom atmosphere. This study aims to analyze the types of teaching styles used in Indonesia and their impact on students’ learning interests so that teachers and school institutions can form effective and innovative learning based on the conditions faced in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method. Secondary data from scientific journals, books, and relevant research articles were analyzed thematically. The study results indicate that teaching styles that actively involve students, such as interactive and differentiation, significantly impact learning interest. Students who feel involved tend to be more motivated because they have a role in learning. In contrast, conventional styles focusing on one-way lectures are less effective in increasing learning interest because they limit student interaction. This study recommends that teachers develop more collaborative and interactive methods and that educational institutions provide the necessary training so that they can apply various teaching styles that are more interesting and relevant to students’ needs.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of using Duolingo, a gamified mobile application, to enhance English vocabulary mastery. Recognizing vocabulary as a foundational element for effective English communication and acknowledging the limitations of traditional learning methods, this research explores the efficacy of digital, gamified approaches. Adopting a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected from 20 second-semester English Education Department students at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo (UNIPDA) through observations, semi-structured interviews, and Likert scale questionnaires. Findings indicate that Duolingo significantly enhances student motivation and engagement due to its gamified features (XP, levels, streaks) and user-friendly, flexible interface. Students reported notable improvements in passive vocabulary knowledge, particularly in word recognition and comprehension, facilitated by the app's repetitive, visual, and audio-text integration. However, a key limitation identified is Duolingo's constrained effectiveness in fostering active vocabulary use and productive language skills, as it offers limited opportunities for real-life conversational application. The study concludes that Duolingo is a highly effective supplementary tool for building receptive vocabulary but should be integrated with interactive communicative methods to achieve comprehensive language proficiency. Future research could quantitatively compare Duolingo's impact on receptive versus productive vocabulary, explore optimal integration strategies into EFL curricula, and investigate long-term retention rates.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of a gamified Word Wall in vocabulary instruction and examines students’ perceptions and engagement with this Word Wall. Conducted with ten students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo, the research employed a descriptive qualitative design. Data were gathered through observations, interviews, and field notes. The findings suggest that incorporating gamification elements such as points, challenges, and collaborative tasks enhanced students’ motivation, vocabulary retention, and active participation. Students engaged actively in group and individual activities, communicated effectively, and responded positively to learning challenges. Despite these benefits, the study identified challenges including limited instructional time and varying levels of student motivation. Some participants found the activities demanding, especially when balancing academic workloads. Overall, the use of the gamified Word Wall contributed to a positive, interactive, and student-centered learning environment. The study highlights the importance of considering learners’ individual differences and educational contexts to ensure the sustainability of gamified strategies. These insights offer practical implications for enhancing vocabulary learning through engaging, participatory methods.
