Abstract

This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of using Duolingo, a gamified mobile application, to enhance English vocabulary mastery. Recognizing vocabulary as a foundational element for effective English communication and acknowledging the limitations of traditional learning methods, this research explores the efficacy of digital, gamified approaches. Adopting a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected from 20 second-semester English Education Department students at Universitas PGRI Delta Sidoarjo (UNIPDA) through observations, semi-structured interviews, and Likert scale questionnaires. Findings indicate that Duolingo significantly enhances student motivation and engagement due to its gamified features (XP, levels, streaks) and user-friendly, flexible interface. Students reported notable improvements in passive vocabulary knowledge, particularly in word recognition and comprehension, facilitated by the app's repetitive, visual, and audio-text integration. However, a key limitation identified is Duolingo's constrained effectiveness in fostering active vocabulary use and productive language skills, as it offers limited opportunities for real-life conversational application. The study concludes that Duolingo is a highly effective supplementary tool for building receptive vocabulary but should be integrated with interactive communicative methods to achieve comprehensive language proficiency. Future research could quantitatively compare Duolingo's impact on receptive versus productive vocabulary, explore optimal integration strategies into EFL curricula, and investigate long-term retention rates.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of deixis in the lyrics of Harris J’s song “Promise”, focusing on deixis categories, their frequency, and their referential meanings. The objectives are to identify the types of deixis present in the lyrics, determine the most dominant type, and interpret the referential meanings of each deictic expression. Grounded in George Yule’s (2006) theory of deixis and employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected by listening to the song and closely examining the lyrics. The findings reveal three types of deixis: person deixis, temporal deixis, and spatial deixis. Person deixis was the most frequently used, with 60 instances (68.97%), followed by spatial deixis (13 instances, 14.94%) and temporal deixis (11 instances, 12.64%). The referents of person deixis typically include the singer and the listener, underscoring the emotional and personal tone of the lyrics. Temporal deixis points to moments of memory and promise, while spatial deixis reflects emotional proximity and movement. Overall, deixis in the song enriches its expressive quality, strengthening the listener’s emotional connection with the narrative.

Abstract

This community engagement project was conducted in Cendono Village, East Java, aiming to transform cow dung into charcoal briquettes as a sustainable energy solution. The main objective was to educate and empower local cattle farmers through a community-based research (CBR) approach. Activities included awareness sessions, training, and hands-on briquette production. Participants were taught the complete process, including drying, mixing, molding, and testing the briquettes. The trial phase showed that the briquettes produced optimal burning duration and sufficient heat output for household cooking. This initiative served as both a waste management strategy and an economic empowerment tool. Results demonstrated successful community adoption of the briquette-making process, improved awareness of sustainable practices, and the potential to generate supplementary income for rural families. Additionally, the initiative contributed to reducing unmanaged cow dung waste, thus preventing environmental and health issues. This program illustrates the potential of organic waste transformation into renewable energy sources. The experience is expected to inspire other rural communities to adopt similar environmentally friendly and economically beneficial practices.

Abstract

Television series frequently function as popular media texts that implicitly and explicitly convey philosophical meanings; however, scholarly inquiry into the philosophical dimensions of Nightmare Teacher (2016) remains limited. This study aims to examine how philosophical ideas are represented and constructed within the narrative structure of the series. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytic design, the research analyzes all episodes through close textual reading, focusing on narrative patterns, character development, dialogic elements, and symbolic representations. The findings indicate that the series embeds philosophical themes primarily through the consequences of students’ wishes within a surreal classroom setting, reflecting existentialist concerns such as freedom, choice, responsibility, and the anxiety of self-determination. Additionally, elements of moral philosophy and phenomenology emerge through the tension between illusion and reality, as characters confront the ethical implications of their desires and the authenticity of their identities. The discussion reveals that the teacher figure functions as an allegorical catalyst that exposes the fragility of human desires within a technologically mediated and consumer-oriented culture. Consequently, the series operates as a philosophical allegory that encourages critical self-awareness and reflective thinking among viewers. Overall, this study concludes that Nightmare Teacher possesses significant pedagogical potential as a medium for philosophical reflection, particularly for younger audiences navigating identity, ethics, and the complexities of contemporary digital life.
