Abstract

This study aimed to valorize rice husk waste by extracting silica and developing a self-cleaning surface coating. Silica was successfully extracted from rice husk ash via an alkaline reflux method followed by acid precipitation. The extracted silica exhibited an amorphous structure with a high purity of 96.7%, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Subsequent modification with Trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) significantly enhanced the hydrophobicity of the silica, resulting in a contact angle of 99.84° with water. The synthesized silica-based material demonstrates promising potential as a self-cleaning surface coating, offering improved durability and ease of maintenance.

Abstract

This study presents the preparation and characterization of activated carbon derived from rubber seed shells using potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation. The raw material for this investigation was obtained from rubber seed shells collected from local rubber plantations in Palangka Raya. The activation process involved the use of the chemical activator KOH at a 1:1 carbon-to-KOH ratio in 200 mL of distilled water for a duration of 24 hours. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the resulting activated carbon exhibited an amorphous structure, and all Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra indicated the presence of functional groups in the activated carbon. The activated carbon possessed a porous structure with a surface area and total pore volume of 2.24 m2/g and 0.02 cm3/g, respectively. These findings necessitate further optimization of the activation process to achieve a larger surface area, thus enabling its application in electronic materials, water treatment, and various other fields.

Abstract

Zircon sand mining in Indonesia generates magnetic waste rich in magnetite (Fe₃O₄), which has semiconductor properties, making it an effective catalyst for degrading organic pollutants. This study explores the synthesis and application of Fe₃O₄ derived from zircon mining waste as a photo-Fenton catalyst for humic acid (HA) degradation in peat water. The Fe₃O₄ catalyst was synthesized using a co-precipitation method, confirmed by FTIR and XRD analyses. FTIR identified Fe–O bonds at 537 cm-1 and 419 cm-1, while XRD showed a spinel crystal structure with peaks at 2θ angles of 30.14°, 35.51°, 43.19°, and 56.96°. The catalytic activity was tested under UV light with varying H₂O₂ volumes and Fe₃O₄ masses. The optimized condition, using 0.03 g Fe₃O₄ and 1 mL H₂O₂, achieved a maximum HA degradation efficiency of 87.06% in 100 minutes. Kinetic analysis revealed second-order kinetics, with a rate constant (k) of 8.29 × 10-4 M-1.min-1 and R² = 0.9911, showing a strong correlation. The high efficiency is attributed to Fe₃O₄'s semiconductor properties, which facilitate hydroxyl radical formation and enhance electron transfer. These findings demonstrate the potential of Fe₃O₄ from zircon mining waste as a sustainable catalyst for environmental applications, particularly in treating organic pollutants in peat water.

Abstract

This study developed an Internet of Things (IoT)-based soil fertility monitoring system to measure soil pH, soil moisture, and light intensity in real time, specifically for peatland agriculture. The system utilizes pH sensors, soil moisture sensors, and light intensity sensors calibrated with standard measuring instruments to ensure accuracy. Calibration results indicate that the pH sensor has an average error of 0.151%, the soil moisture sensor 1.11%, and the light intensity sensor 6.152%, with the latter exhibiting the highest variation due to environmental factors. Monitoring data shows that soil pH fluctuates more during the day (4.45–4.60) compared to a more stable range at night (4.75–4.80). Soil moisture remains high during the day at 85–90%, while at night, it gradually increases from 25% to 35%. Light intensity fluctuates between 9000–12000 lux during the day and approaches 0 lux at night. With high accuracy and real-time data accessibility, this system can assist farmers in optimizing irrigation, fertilization, and peatland soil management using IoT-based technology, ensuring sustainable agricultural productivity in peatland environments.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the understanding and skills of the Kelompok Tani Mulyo (Mulyo Farmer Group) in processing dragon fruit stem waste into an alternative poultry feed. The method employed was a community empowerment-based training approach, which included stages of observation, implementation, and evaluation. The evaluation instruments consisted of pre-test and post-test questionnaires, which were analyzed using a descriptive comparative technique to measure the improvement in partners’ knowledge and skills. The results of this program showed an increase in participants’ technical understanding of waste processing from 41.5% to 100%. Most participants who initially hesitated or lacked understanding of the processing techniques are now capable of independently producing feed. This improvement demonstrates that the training was effective in transferring knowledge and skills, providing a concrete solution for waste management and promoting product diversification through the creation of additional livestock feed.
