Abstract

God's selection of just 300 men put Gideon in a very difficult faith dilemma, between advancing or retreating in battle against the Midianite army which was many times more numerous. This act of God certainly had significant meaning and purpose for Gideon and his army. These aims and purposes can only be understood and rightly expresses based on a reading of the context of Gideon's own situation, not based on our current context. A reading of the context shows that God had a very clear design and purpose, namely to show Gideon and his men that their victory was entirely due to God's own deeds and power; to make Gideon more trusting and dependent upon God's presence. God's choice of selection criteria for the me also shows that there is an attitude of heart within most men that makes them unfit to fight, and so not needed at the battlefront.

Abstract

The abundant life in John 10:10b is understood in various ways. Prosperity theology adherents understand the abundant life which is the purpose of Christ's first coming into this world in a different way than others. The group understands that the 'abundance' (περισσὸν) in this text is material (worldly) abundance that Christ brings to every believer. Therefore there is an assumption that every believer should live with material abundance. Conversely, a believer whose life is materially poor will be considered to lack faith or sin which results in God not blessing him with material abundance. The methodology used in this study is the literature study method using exegesis principles based on Biblical hermeneutic laws. In-depth exegesis studies, based on textual, contextual, grammatical, structural, historical, literary, exegetical, and theological studies show that 'abundance' in the text is not an object (something) that believers get, but a description of how they get that object (eternal life). According to this text, the purpose of Christ's first coming is to bring eternal life to every believer in Him, and believers will very abundantly obtain eternal life. Really the coming, death, and resurrection of Christ are of no value if the goal is only to provide material abundance for each of His followers.

Abstract

An article titled “Yesus dan Roh Kudus” written by Rita Wahyu and published on the website “Sarapan Pagi Biblikal” became highly controversial in 2021, particularly regarding her interpretation of the text in Matthew 1:20. The article contains elements of Modalism, Modalistic Monarchianism, or Sabellianism, which teach about the Oneness of God, meaning that God has one nature and one person with three names: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Rita emphasizes her thesis on the preposition ἐκ in the text, which she believes should be interpreted as “of” in English, indicating that the child in Mary’s womb is the Holy Spirit. However, research on the preposition ἐκ in Matthew 1:20 using exegetical methods based on Biblical grammatical laws shows that Rita’s interpretation lacks a basis that can be sustained exegetically. Her interpretation of the preposition is eisegesis, not exegesis. From an exegetical standpoint, the preposition ἐκ in the text indicates the source or origin of the child; the cause or agent of Mary’s pregnancy; and/or the giver of the seed of the baby in Mary’s womb, namely the Holy Spirit.

Abstract

One of the textual problems in Colossians 1:7 concerns whether the Apostle Paul as the original writer of the letter to the Colossians wrote the variant ὑμῶν (you/your) or the variant ἡμῶν (us/our) in the clauses ὅς ἐστιν πιστὸς ὑπὲρ [ὑμῶν or ἡμῶν?] Scholars have defended both variants. Textual analysis of external evidence considerations suggests that the ἡμῶν (us/our) reading variant has earlier and more authoritative witnesses. On the other hand, internal evidence analysis, namely from context, structural, and exegetical considerations, support the ἡμῶν (us/our) reading variant and does not allow for the possibility of the ὑμῶν (you/your) reading variant being the original. Thus, the transmission of ἡμῶν to ὑμῶν may be due to a homoioarcton error and harmonization correction. So the original clause is ὅς ἐστιν πιστὸς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν διάκονος τοῦ Χριστοῦ (who is a faithful minister of Christ on our/us behalf), emphasizing that Epaphras was Paul and Timothy's representative in serving the Colossians.

Abstract

The implementation of Christian Education must be based on correct theological principles, so as not to deviate from Bible truth, and glorify the Lord Jesus, the giver of the task of Christian Education itself. One of the main and important texts on this subject is Matthew 28:16-20 which is known as the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus for all believers, and the task of teaching part of it. Therefore, it is very important to understand the principles of Christian Education theology according to this text. Based on the exegesis study of Matthew 28:16-20, several Christian Education theological principles are put forward in it, namely: (1) Actors of Christian Education must have a loyal character, and be taught about the Bible first so they have teaching skills later; (2) The content or material taught in Christian Education is the teachings of the Lord Jesus; (3) Christian Education must be carried out by all believers, namely they have all the conditions in the first point; (4) Christian Education must function as a means of discipling every new believer (new disciple) to mature their faith; (5) Christian Education must be given to all believers of all ages; (6) Christian Education is the task from the Lord Jesus, the Owner of all power in heaven and on earth, therefore, it is a task that must be carried out; (7) Christian Education must aim to form every believer to become obedient to the teachings of the Lord Jesus; (8) Christian Education actors will be accompanied by the Lord Jesus; (9) Christian Education must be carried out on the basis of the authority of the Lord Jesus.

Abstract

The texts concerning God’s hardening of Pharaoh's heart (in Ex. 9:12, and related texts) have introduced a very complex question and tension within the Christian community, namely the very difficult theological dilemma concerning the character of God and Pharaoh's free will as a human being. On the one hand, some people have fallen into interpretations that exalt the sovereignty of God and ignore the free will of man, while on the other hand some exalt the free will of man but ignore the sovereignty of God. The most appalling consequence is that some people leave Christ and Christianity because of this unresolved text issue. However, an in-depth exegetical study of the issue proves both God's sovereignty over Pharaoh and his responsibility for his own free will.

Abstract

This paper is about The Millennial Kingdom in Revelation 20: 1-10. By using the exegetical method which has nine steps of analysis (context, literary, structural, grammatical, lexical, historical/conceptual, theological and exegetical), the writer examines the meaning of the phrase inductively. The conclusions obtained are several things, which can be generally described that the phrase thousand years is about the existence of the kingdom of God on earth in the future, literally for a thousand years, where Christ as king was accompanied by his twelve disciples as judges. At that time, the condition of the earth was peaceful because there was no apostasy from Satan.

Abstract

The practice of anointing with oil has been done in the church since the first century to the present. On the other hand, there are also churches which have refused to do this. The practice of anointing with oil has essentially lifted from James 5:14. This text has become one of one text in the New Testament which is quite difficult to understand and bring a variety of views. Not a few denominations of the church understand James 5:14 is wrong, even the Catholic church including in it. The increasingly incorrect practice of anointing in the church today, that can be believed can heal disease physically and a variety of other functions push back the author to check the text of James 5:14 in the exegesis. Studies the exegesis of the deep, which focuses on the contextual, grammatical-structural,

Abstract

Various essential discussions have been raised against Mark's parenthetical commentary in 7:19b, one of which is the discussion of eating from that statement. On the one hand, some take the text as a clear teaching of the Bible about the abolition of the food law in the Torah, as a result of which the law no longer binds both Jewish believers and Gentile believers. On the other hand, some consider it meaningless as the abolition of the food law in the Torah. Within this group, various meanings have been proposed. Historically, lexically, grammatically, and contextually it shows that Mark 7:19b is not a teaching of the abolition of the food law in the Torah, but a "guarantee" for the Gentile believers in Rome as Mark's gospel audience that there will be no unclean food for them because of contamination. or consumed with dirty hands (not washed), but the food is kept clean, so it cannot defile those who eat it. Therefore, Mark 7:19b will be of no significance to the reader if it is understood as teaching the abolition of the food law because they do not have binding laws on unclean and kosher food and need to be abolished, it is only given to the Jews. Therefore, for them, the food is kept clean. Even if the abolition of the food law in the Torah is done, it has nothing to do with Gentile believers.

Abstract

This writing employs a qualitative approach to the method of literature research. In their apologetic activities, several Indonesian Christian apologists ended up in court because they were caught in blasphemy laws. The reason is that Christian apologists often consider acts of offense (attacking) other religious beliefs to be included in the scope of Christian apologetics. The Bible does not justify acts of apologetics to insult and demean other religious beliefs but to correct existing misunderstandings. An arrogant attitude in apologetics will cause new problems for apologists by trying to build a wall of enmity (separator) between opponents and the gospel that is conveyed so that it opens opportunities for the gospel to be reviled and rejected, as well as building a bad mindset about the gospel because Christian apologetics is not to win an argument but to pave the way for preaching the Gospel of Christ. Because the success of an apologist lies in a respectful and gentle attitude and behavior accompanied by a pure heart. So the research objective of this scientific paper is to expose the attitude that Indonesian apologists should have and to open the curtain on understanding misunderstandings in understanding offense perspective apologetics.
