Abstract

This paper investigates the implementation of constructivist learning, as it was practiced by five EFL teachers at a vocational high school in Indonesia. We offer a ‘mentoring program’ for teachers to support each other and provide resources that are bottom-up, free, and relevant, conducted in a collegial atmosphere. We adopted a qualitative approach as it enabled us to understand and cultivate deeper the learning process that occurred in the classroom. Data were qualitatively collected and analyzed in two ways. First, it focused on the participants’ interview, observation, self-reflection and discussion on the variables in the mentoring program covering the need and expectation of EFL teachers in the formal pedagogical setting, sources of teachers’ resistance to participate in Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program, the impact of TPD program on the teacher pedagogical competence, and conditions contributing to sustainable development as a result in the TPD program. Second, it was to disclose the researchers’ viewpoints and reflections under variables, as stated in the earlier analysis. Our research findings suggested that constructivist-learning practices were proven to be successful in helping the teachers experienced promising mentoring progress of TPD. Teachers and students underwent a significant change as the learning activities became more engaging and fun. Teachers confessed to have their pedagogical knowledge and practice expanded while having their attitude and mindset shifted after going through a series of activities inside the mentoring program. The program was central in nurturing teachers’ self-identity and helping them overcome their internal blocks. In the longer-term, this program contributes to developing teacher professionalism as they started to see the potentials and positives impacts of TPD programs.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to the education sector. The shift from classroom-based conventional learning to virtual mode means that the study from home policy appears to place responsibilities of students learning on parents. By focusing on primary level education, we explored parents’ voices and aspirations in assisting their children in taking online English language classes. As most of the parents have been overwhelmed, we offer some insights regarding how to mitigate the problems. Using photovoice, fifteen parents whose children were learning English language in primary schools were invited to take the photographs from the online English language learning (OELL) program and discussed the photographs. We used Photovoice in the project to capture parents’ concerns over the program and their relationship with the pandemic. Thematic analysis was used as a tool to generate important themes from the photovoice data. While appreciating the program, our respondents highlighted the obstacles and concerns over the online English learning through their photographs. In this article, we demonstrated, that photovoice not only offered a space to explore parents’ experiences in engaging in their children’s OELL program, but also served as a space for parents’ aspirations in disrupting and influencing educational programs and reforms.

Abstract

In recent years, some universities have required their students to publish scientific papers as one of the graduation requirements. These scientific papers can be in the form of articles published in scientific journals or in proceedings. Several factors affect the success of students in writing these scientific papers. One of them is writing anxiety. The study aims to investigate EFL students’ writing anxiety when writing scientific papers. The respondents were English Education and English Literature Study Program students (N=61). The data were collected with a questionnaire. The study found that the students have a moderate level of writing anxiety. The mean score of anxiety is 61.82, indicating a moderate level of writing anxiety. Somatic anxiety score ranged from 8.00 to 35.00, with a mean of 20.10 and a standard deviation of 5.29, while avoidance anxiety showed a mean of 17.80 with a standard deviation of 4.10. Cognitive anxiety scores ranged from 17.00 to 36.00, with a mean of 23.92. This was the highest mean score, followed by somatic anxiety, with avoidance being the least prevalent. The results of this study show that the majority of EFL students experience significant levels of anxiety when writing scientific papers for publications, and the three types of anxiety, namely cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and avoidance behavior, play roles in the general level of writing anxiety. Implications of these findings suggest that educational institutions should provide academic support, particularly in helping students develop effective strategies to manage cognitive anxiety and improve topic selection processes, which could lead the students to enhance their writing performance and have a greater likelihood of successful publication.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Blindfold game in enhancing vocabulary mastery among students. A quasi-experimental design was utilized, involving both control and experimental groups. Sixth-grade students from a Demak elementary school participated in the study, which employed a non-random sampling method. The research sample included an experimental group consisting of 22 students from class VIA and a control group of 21 students from class VIB. Data on students' vocabulary knowledge were collected through a vocabulary exam comprising 15 multiple-choice questions and 10 matching items, administered via pre-tests and post-tests. The researcher analyzed the data using a t-test and SPSS 23. The pre- and post-test scores for the experimental group were 60.91 and 78.18, respectively, while the control group achieved scores of 56.76 and 60.95. The statistical analysis indicated a significance level (2-tailed) of less than 0.05, resulting in the rejection of H0 and the acceptance of H1. In conclusion, the Blindfold game has been demonstrated to be an effective instructional tool for improving vocabulary knowledge among Indonesian EFL young learners. The game not only enhanced students' vocabulary mastery but also increased their motivation to learn English. Accordingly, it is recommended that teachers utilize diverse teaching methods to foster students' learning motivation, encouraging them to become engaged and enthusiastic participants in class.

Abstract

Despite being introduced in February 2022, many teachers still need help applying the Independence curriculum at their schools. Many teachers must be more experienced in implementing the curriculum and require additional time to comprehend its ideals and essence fully. The community service program aimed to enhance teachers' proficiency in creating and composing instructional modules for the Independence Curriculum. The program participants were English instructors from Madrasah Aliyah in the Demak Regency, who were members of the Demak English Teacher Association of Madrasah Aliyah. The program was divided into three phases: pre-face-to-face training, face-to-face training, and post-face-to-face training consultation and help. A questionnaire gathered data on the subjects and interviews with select association members before in-person training. During the in-person training, the Community Service team engaged with the teachers by presenting educational materials, facilitating discussions, and giving participants exercises. The instruction was placed at Madrasah Aliyah Demak for a single day. Observations throughout the training revealed that numerous English teachers needed a complete understanding of teaching modules, resulting in their inability to develop and write them effectively. Following the training, the Community Service Teams offered consultations and assistance to the teachers to support them in finishing the modules. Teachers encountered persistent challenges, indicating the need for additional training.

Abstract

The zone-based new student admission scheme for lower and secondary public schools has significantly changed education practices, not only in the admission policy but also in the teaching and learning practices. This study aims to describe and compare academic self-efficacy and the achievement of Indonesian tenth-graders admitted through the zoning and achievement admission schemes. Five public senior high schools were purposively selected as samples to represent different clusters of school preferences before the zoning scheme was implemented. Data were collected through an academic self-efficacy questionnaire specially prepared for the study and an achievement test conducted by the classroom teachers. A total of 483 tenth graders completed the questionnaire and an English achievement test; among them, 74.3% were admitted through the zoning scheme, 17.6% were through the achievement scheme, and the remaining 8.1%, were through affirmation, transfer of parent’s job, and other schemes. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS. The tenth graders had a high level of academic self-efficacy. However, there was a significant difference in academic self-efficacy and English achievement between the tenth graders admitted through the zoning scheme and those admitted through the achievement scheme. The causes of the difference and the implications are discussed.
