Abstract

To improve the quality of education outcomes, English teachers have to enhance their competence in assessing students‘ learning. In fact, in Curriculum 2013, many Englishteachers find difficulties in assessing students‘ learning. One of the reasons is lack ofknowledge about the model of assessment for Curriculum 2013. Therefore, in this article, analternative model of project-based assessment is proposed. The focus here is on the Englishwriting competence. This article actually concerns with a proposed model of assessment withpilot study data. The pilot study was conducted by adapting research and development (R &D) procedure. The participants of the study were English teachers from Yogyakarta andgraduate students of English Language Studies, Sanata Dharma University. The techniqueused were questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were verbal andnumerical. The result of the pilot study shows that the model is good but needs someimprovement. It also reveals some principles in developing the effective project-basedassessment model: practical, holistic, systematic, systemic, relevant, authentic, andmeaningful. In addition, the project-based instrument should have: clear objectives, clearscoring criteria, clear instruction, clear items and feedback. Keywords: alternative model, project-based assessment, writing competence

Abstract

This paper aims to discover the feasibility and the applicability of task-based learning in improving the quality of the teaching and learning process (TLP) of reading in Indonesian secondary schools in relation to the teaching of genre or text types as required by the national curriculum. This is an action research study which is qualitative in nature. The data were obtained through observations and interviews with the students and the collaborators. They were in the forms of field notes, interview transcripts, and photographs. In addition, this research applied the investigator triangulation, the theoretical triangulation and the time triangulation. The actions implemented in this research are discussing new vocabulary items and guessing meaning from context, applying skimming and scanning strategies, discussing grammar related to the text, conducting a question/answer game, providing various materials from different sources, and applying group/pair work. The results of the research show that the students’ motivation increased. They were more enthusiastic in learning reading. Moreover, the students were interested in various materials presented by the teacher. They could get involved actively in the reading learning process. In addition, the classroom interaction also increased. The students could interact very well with other students and the teacher. In conclusion, the use of task-based approach with its accompanying actions is effective to improve the teaching and learning process of reading.

Abstract

The current study is an attempt to discover the vocabulary size of students majoring in International Natural Science Education and the developmental pattern of their vocabulary size. The proposed research questions are: (1) What are the vocabulary sizes of students of international natural science education? and (2) Is their vocabulary size different across levels (freshmen, sophomore and junior)? To achieve the research aim, a cross-sectional research design was used. The total number of 79 students from three semesters studying in International Natural Science Education participated in the study. The instrument used was a Vocabulary Size Test developed by Nation and Beglar (2007). A descriptive statistic and an inferential statistics One-Way ANOVA continued by a pos-hoc test (Scheffe) were run in order to answer the proposed research questions. The results of computation revealed that the vocabulary size was 5,271-word families for the freshmen level, 6,142-word families for the sophomore level and 6,524-word families for the junior level. Based on the result of inferential statistics One-Way ANOVA, the student’s vocabulary size across levels are different. The F-ratio indicates that the difference between these groups was 7,369 in the level of significance 0,001. Furthermore, based on the Scheffe test, the significant difference lies between semester 2 and semester 4. Meanwhile, the difference of the vocabulary size between semester 4 and semester 6 was found to be less significant. In general, it can be concluded that there is a difference on the development of student’s vocabulary size reflected by the result of statistical analysis. The developmental pattern of students’ vocabulary size seems to be positive since the higher the level, the larger the students’ vocabulary size.

Abstract

Song lyrics are widely recognized as authentic materials that expose EFL learners to natural language use. One linguistic feature that often challenges learners is phrasal verbs, which frequently appear in everyday communication yet are difficult to interpret due to their semantic complexity. This study aims to analyze phrasal verbs in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album 1989. Specifically, the study identifies various types of phrasal verbs and their meanings in context.  Using content analysis, phrasal verbs found in four selected songs were identified and analyzed in terms of their syntactic characteristics and contextual meanings. The results show that phrasal verbs in the lyrics are used not only as grammatical constructions but also as expressive resources to represent emotional states, interpersonal conflict, and relational dynamics. These uses show that song lyrics can support learners in understanding phrasal verbs through meaningful contextual use. Therefore, the study highlights the pedagogical potential of popular song lyrics as authentic materials for facilitating EFL vocabulary learning, particularly in helping learners comprehend and use phrasal verbs more naturally.   Keywords: authentic materials, EFL, phrasal verbs, song lyrics, vocabulary learning
