Abstract

Teacher agency in facing new national curriculum shifts has been a topic discussed widely around the world, as many nations implement curriculum shifts and transitions. Indonesia has also in its early years implemented the new national curriculum called Freedom-to-Learn Curriculum. This study is aimed at exploring the agency of language teachers of public junior high schools in two different towns in Java Island, Indonesia. Employing the ecological approach by Priestley, Biesta, and Robinson (2015) which supported the interplay and dynamics of iterative, practical-evaluative, and projective dimensions, this qualitative study brings into play the semi-structured and focus group discussion data-gathering techniques. Six teachers participated in this study. The finding showed that the level of agency was diverse ranging from high (demonstrated by three research participants), emerging (demonstrated by one participant), and low (participated by two participants). Future researchers might examine the teacher agency by involving more participants as well as capture the robust study of language teacher agencies from other parts of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the symbolism of water in the Gospel of John, revealing its role in disclosing Jesus’ identity and message. Through word study, literature analysis, and qualitative methods, the research examines narratives involving the term “water”, incorporating insights from Jewish and Christian traditions. The findings suggest that water symbolizes the Holy Spirit, rebirth, new life, and other spiritual meanings within the Fourth Gospel. This analysis offers valuable insights for readers interested in the symbolic use of water in John’s Gospel and provides believers with a deeper understanding of its theological significance. By examining how water serves as a profound narrative device, the study illustrates how the Gospel of John employs this element to bridge the literal and the spiritual, emphasizing the essence of Jesus’ mission and the transformative power of faith. This research contributes to the broader understanding of Johannine symbolism, highlighting the intricate ways in which simple elements like water can convey complex theological themes and spiritual truths.

Abstract

This study investigated the self-regulated learning strategies employed by secondary school students living in Panti Asuhan Bahagia Sampit. It attempted to reveal some variables influencing their self-regulated learning strategies in relation to their academic achievement. Using a qualitative research methodology and a narrative approach, the study was laid upon a social cognitive theory. Drawing from 45 children as the population of the study, six participants were selected for the study using purposive sampling. Each participant was interviewed twice, with each lasting for about 30 minutes. The findings demonstrated that those exhibiting high levels of self-regulation outperform those exhibiting low levels of self-regulation or lacking self-regulated learning. Personal, behavioral, and environmental factors all had an impact on how students underwent self-regulated learning. The study is set to offer efficient interventions to help secondary school children from orphanages succeed academically by examining those areas.

Abstract

Educational scholars generally agree that educational policies are inevitably regarded as one of the most contested areas in education. On the one hand, democracy requires more involvement on the part of the citizens. At the most ideal level, democratic mechanisms have been developed to allow more people to more fruitfully participate in decision making. It follows that the political mechanisms would entail better policies, which represent the voices of any people. On the other hand, politics seems to run against this ideal. Policy making is highly convoluted with economy and political trade-offs. Drawing on debates over the phonic vs. whole-language policies in the U.S. in the past four or five decades, this paper sets to discuss the complexity of politics and language policy. A growing awareness of the complexity of politics and policy making is certainly a pressing need for those working in the area of English Education.

Abstract

Teacher identity still remains an important topic to discuss in education because it shows teachers’ personal and professional aspects. Teacher identity is not a static circumstance as it changes depending on the contexts. As zoning policy in new student admission in Indonesia remains as educational current issue, this study aims to explore how the zoning policy implementation develops English teacher identity in high and low-performing schools. This study employed qualitative approach as the purpose of this research is not to be generalized; this empirical research is aimed to reveal holistic discussion of particular subjects instead. Twelve English teachers from different public senior high schools in Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia were selected for semi-structured interviews and two of them were invited to have in-depth interviews. The data were coded and analyzed based on the framework of teacher identity construction. The results showed that the contribution of zoning policy implementation in teacher identity development varied. Firstly, zoning policy implementation influences teacher identity regarding their beliefs on students’ characteristics in high and low-performing schools. Secondly, teachers’ maintenance of their moral purpose as educator was developed through the implementation. Thirdly, class dynamics were triggered by the previous two aspects

Abstract

Today’s venture capitalists will undergo a rational approach to open new schools so as to ensure long-term sustainability, in which alignment of goals, job divisions, revenue projections, student intakes, personnel placements, promotion strategies, to name a few, are organized as a concerted effort. Xavier Learning Community, a newly established Jesuit higher education institution, has come from a different direction and therefore, attempts to live against the modernist, accountability-based approach to opening a new educational enterprise. XLC Chiang Rai is nested in a socio-culturally, historically, and politically nuanced space of northern Thailand, where the hub of human trafficking, jade mining, drug abuse, Chinese-backed casinos, and prostitution are rampant. Given the dire contexts of the widening gaps between the majority of the Thai population and the self-subsistent tribal groups, as well as the limited access to quality education among the tribal groups living in remote regions of Thai borderlands, XLC has come to offer the young generation of those marginalized to enjoy affordable educational services. Drawing from a Husserlian perspective on purpose, intentionality, and harmony, this study reports a one-month activity to accompany XLC teachers in developing their consciousness in their service to support the Jesuit cause.

Abstract

This research explored the role of podcast-making project within project-based learning (PBL) framework in enhancing students' self-efficacy in speaking English. Fifty-three second-semester students from two intermediate listening and speaking classes at a private university in Yogyakarta's English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) participated. A sequential explanatory mixed-method approach was employed. To provide robust findings, the data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations to provide more comprehensive findings. Quantitative data were examined using paired sample t-tests, while thematic analysis was leveraged for the qualitative data. The findings disclosed a significant improvement in students' self-efficacy, as evidenced by an increase in mean scores and a decrease in variance, indicating greater consistency of confidence levels. In addition, the qualitative insights identified four major themes as the factors in enhancing students' self-efficacy: growth through personal challenge, modelling success as vicarious learning, collaborative environment, and emotional regulation and coping strategies. These findings suggested that integrating PBL, such as podcast-making, into language education can effectively foster students' self-efficacy and ability to communicate in real-world scenarios. Further implications are provided, suggesting that educators can adopt similar PBL activities to help learners overcome psychological barriers and develop a positive mindset toward speaking in English.

Abstract

The Merdeka Belajar curriculum was established to promote Indonesia's educational goal and as part of attempts to restore learning. It is a more flexible curriculum framework that focuses on necessary information while also building students' character and competence. However, not all schools have implemented the Merdeka Belajar curriculum based on its principles. Therefore, this study aims to know the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum for seventh-grade English lessons in Gunungkidul. This study employed a qualitative method to get the data from three English teachers. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and field observations. The results of the study revealed that the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum in grade seven junior high schools in Gunungkidul has not fully followed the Merdeka Belajar curriculum concept. Only one of the three teachers implemented the mandated curriculum according to the concept. Others demonstrated to have implemented several concepts, such as giving diagnostic tests to grade seven students, student-centered learning, teaching according to students' learning styles and abilities, and implementing formative and summative assessments following the concept of an independent curriculum. Nonetheless, the teachers enthusiastically support the adoption of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum for a variety of reasons, including material flexibility, applicability to real-world demands, and the development of creativity.
