This paper explores models of English morphology, namely Item and Arrangement (IA), Item and Process (IP), and Word and Paradigm (WP), which can be used to analyze morphological data, particularly word formation involving prefixes and suffixes. Sample data, consisting of complex words or words having more than one morpheme, were analyzed using the three models to discover their strengths and shortcomings. In order to find out the differences between the three models of morphology, it is important that the current writer should examine strategies for distinguishing between derivational affixes and inflectional ones. There exist three advantages if morphologists know very well the three models of English morphology. First is that IA fails to display a clear sequence of the item and arrangement when dealing with some irregular plural nouns and irregular past tense. Second is that IP offers a better solution to irregular plural nouns, such as mice and men. This paper investigated the problems of understanding basic or fundamental tenses in English grammar (the present tense, present continuous tense, present future tense, and present future continuous) that are faced by the first semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Basic tenses in English grammar play a decisive role in various aspects related to learning English as the target language. Accordingly, it is essential to conduct a study on the issues of basic tenses in order to assist students to overcome their grammatical problems. Data were collected through questionnaires that were emailed to the participants. Results showed that the students had difficulties in producing or analyzing the present continuous tense, the present perfect tense and the present perfect continuous tense. The first semester students also faced difficulty in remembering the formula of each tense, admitting that they did not review the basic tenses regularly and the students found it difficult to comprehend their grammar lessons well in the classroom. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020206

This study attempts to explore the frequency of use of swear words and their implication for English language learning-teaching. Swear words or expletives are usually considered negative or rude to be used even in the United States or United Kingdom as English-speaking countries. In English language learning-teaching, swear words become part of linguistic studies and socio-cultural knowledge for teachers and students. This study aims to resolve two questions, namely first, what swear words have the highest frequency based on COCA and second, what implications of the frequency of swear words are for learners and teachers of English. Data were collected from a survey conducted using Facebook, which is a social medium used widely in both the United States and Indonesia for more than 13 years, and were retrieved from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), more precisely the frequency of swear words. Language and linguistics are vital in people’s daily conversation. However, because of some causes, there are some misunderstandings or pragmatic failures which may appear in communication among people. Many studies have looked into the pragmatic failures between native speakers and non-native speakers but this study investigates pragmatic failures in Netflix TV drama series “13 Reasons Whyâ€. It aims to discover pragmatic failures that happened in the drama and their causes. To gather the data, the researchers watched the series and highlighted some events that contained pragmatic failures. Then, the researchers used three steps of data analysis: gather and organize, categorize, and analyze the findings. The findings showed that there were 25 pragmatic failures that happened in the drama. They were caused by five reasons, namely failure in understanding others’ intentions, failures in understanding others’ state, denials to the reality, trauma, and failures in understanding a situation. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.010212

Pronunciation has been one of the compulsory courses for the first year English education students of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Considering the importance of pronunciation skills for the English students, the researchers conducted research to investigate capability of the first year English Education students in pronouncing academic words listed in the Academic Word List. This study aimed to examine whether, firstly, the first year English Education students of Sanata Dharma University pronounced the selected academic words correctly and secondly, to discover the percentage of the correct pronunciation of the students in pronouncing the academic words. Data, consisting of pronunciations of 10 selected academic words, were collected through audio recordings. To solve the first question, the researchers conducted a one-shot design study, namely dealing with the pronunciation performance of the students at a particular time. To resolve the second question, the researchers calculated the percentage of the students? correct pronunciations. Results showed that as a whole the students mispronounced the selected academic words and the percentage of correct pronunciation reached 35 per cent.

This paper explored code switching between English and Indonesian in articles in the daily newspaper The Jakarta Post. Data were collected from six articles published in The Jakarta Post. The code switching data were analyzed to determine the reasons for the writers to switch codes. Results showed that there existed five reasons for code switching, namely “lack of one word in either language, one wants to make a point, some activities have only been experienced in one of the languages, some words are easier, more distinguishable and easier to use in one of the languages, and the speaker has difficulty in expressing oneself: expressing group identityâ€. Related to the educational field, it is expected that the results will be beneficial for English teachers or lecturers to be more aware that sometimes they cannot avoid using code switching because translating some Indonesian words into English will lose the essence of the meaning.

The paper investigated common grammatical errors produced by Indonesian university students of English as a foreign language when writing their undergraduate research proposals. Accordingly, an urgent research question to resolve was what common grammatical errors are made by the seventh semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University in writing Chapter One of their research proposals? To answer the research question, the researchers conducted a content analysis. The researchers analysed students? research proposals, focusing on grammatical issues identified in the first chapter. Results showed that the errors were omission (content and grammatical morpheme), addition (double marking, regularization, and simple addition), misinformation (regularization errors, archi-forms, and alternating forms), misordering, parallelism and diction. The top three errors were successively omission (38.15 per cent), addition (21.97 per cent) and parallelism (18.5 per cent).

This study attempts to help senior high school English teachers in developing their teaching material about advertisement, which is included in the state mandated curriculum. Having analyzed 20 advertisements, we found two types of speech acts, namely representatives and directives. The representative acts used were 59% and directive acts were 41% of the data. The advertisement strategy in Indonesia utilized representative acts, which intended to highlight the good quality of the products or services, whereas, the use of directive acts was situational since it is usually preceded by the appearance of representative acts. Since both speech acts frequently appeared in the advertisements on Indonesian online news websites, we recommend that teachers should provide exposures toward the linguistic features, which support students’ ability to produce advertisement texts containing representative and directive acts.

This paper investigated English swear words used in a novel. This study was urgent to conduct because using swear words is a natural behavior in communication which is indicated by the employment of certain swear words to express emotion, to reduce frustrated feeling, and to show solidarity to others. Two research points to resolve were as follows: what types of swearing which the main character used and what motives for swearing in the novel. Data, consisting of 46 swear words, were collected from the Antologi Rasa novel written by Ika Natassa, and were investigated using a content analysis. Findings showed the following: 26 (56.5%) occurrences of auxiliary swearing, 12 (26.1%) of expletives swearing, 4 (8.7%) of abusive swearing, and 4 (8.7 %) of humorous swearing. Three motives for the main character to swear were as follows: psychological motives (23 occurrences or 50.0 %), social motives (19 or 41.30%), and linguistic motives (4 or 8.70%).

Since becoming a translator needs certain skills and qualifications, this article providesdetailed information on the process from starting and developing a career in translation.Based on accessible references and a limited interview with a professional translator, somerecommendations are in place. A perspective translator has to go through the followingprocedures; (1) acquisition and development of language competence, (2) translationcompetence development, (3) translation market, and (4) career development. Being asuccessful translator, one should have known how to start, including how to tell people theirexistence and knowing their skills and abilities in translation; how they manage their personaland financial management, how they deal with customers, and what to do if things go wrong.
