Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Community service is a tridharma activity of higher education that must be carried out by all lecturers. The theme of this community service activity is Socialization and Practice of Making Liquid Soap Using Essential Oils in the Tambak Rejo Village Community, North Bengkulu. Soap is a primary material used in everyday life by the community in general. Making soap cannot be separated from the application of chemical concepts. In this community service activity, the community is given information and practice of making simple and easy-to-do soap. This activity was carried out in the Tambk Rejo Village Meeting Room, North Bengkulu. The expected output of this activity is in the form of  documentation  and publication articles from this community service activity. The expected result is an increase in understanding of making economical soap for everyday life. Keywords: Liquid Soap; Essential Oil; Chemistry Practice

Abstract

Students’ understanding of synthetic polymer topics was still low due to the abstract nature of the material and the lack of supporting teaching resources. This study focused on developing a project-integrated chemistry e-module on the topic, aiming to produce a valid, practical, and effective learning resource. The development model used was ADDIE, which consisted of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The validation results showed that the e-module was very feasible in terms of content with a score of 94% and feasible in terms of media with a score of 73%. After revision, the media score increased to 96% with a very feasible category. A small-scale trial involving 12 students of grade XII in the 2024/2025 academic year obtained very positive responses with an average of 94%. The implementation with 27 students of grade XI IPA 1 MAN 1 Bengkulu through pre-test and post-test resulted in an N-Gain score of 0.74 (high category). These findings proved that the developed e-module was effective in improving students’ understanding and was feasible to be used as an alternative chemistry learning resource on synthetic polymers.

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue primarily driven by increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Numerous studies have been conducted to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as a strategy to mitigate its effects. Soils, particularly volcanic soils, are known to store significant amounts of carbon - second only to deep-sea reservoirs. This study aims to investigate the soil organic carbon content distribution of volcanic soils along elevation gradient on Kaba Volcano in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Nine soil samples, both disturbed and undisturbed, were collected at a depth of 10 cm from three locations at different elevations: the foothill (1360–1380 m a.s.l.), hillside (1610–1620 m a.s.l.), and hilltop (1930–1940 m a.s.l.). Undisturbed samples were collected using a 70-mm core cylinder to determine soil bulk density, while disturbed samples were taken with a shovel and analyzed for soil organic carbon, pH, and particle size distribution (sand, silt, and clay). The results showed that the hillside samples had the highest soil organic carbon content, while the hilltop samples had the lowest. Correspondingly, the lowest soil pH was observed at the hillside, and the highest bulk density was found at the hilltop. Particle size analysis revealed that sand and clay content at the hillside were similar to those at the foothill and both were higher than those at the hilltop. The lower soil organic carbon at the hilltop may be attributed to drier conditions and reduced vegetation cover compared to the foothill and hillside.

Abstract

Oil palm kernel shells (KS) are a byproduct of oil palm processing that often receives little attention and is treated as waste. Biochar has various applications for example as an adsorbent. This study aims to prepare and characterize biochar from KS and evaluate its effectiveness in adsorbing Cu2+. The biochar (BKS) was prepared by heating KS in a furnace at 500°C for three hours. The resulting material was sieved using a 50-mesh sieve to ensure uniformity. Characterization of BKS showed that it had a surface area of 319.9 m2 g-1, a total pore volume of 0.168 cm3 g-1, and an average pore size of 1.049 nm, classifying it as microporous. Analysis for its functional groups revealed the presence of functional groups with stretching vibrations corresponding to O-H (3400 cm-1), C-H (2920 cm-1), C=O (1700 cm-1), C=C (1432-1690 cm-1), and C-O (1000-1200 cm-1). SEM imaging displayed a clear porous structure with well-defined channels. Adsorption isotherm experiments demonstrated that Cu2+ adsorption data using BKS aligned better with the Freundlich isotherm model than with the Langmuir model. These findings indicate that BKS derived from KS is less effective for removing Cu2+ ions from water compared to other biochars.
