Abstract

Fresh vegetables can be a source of transmission of worm infections to humans. The behavior of washing fresh vegetables that are not good by housewives and sellers of fresh vegetables in food stalls becomes large in transmitting worm infections if there are worm eggs that are still attached to fresh vegetables. The most common contamination found in fresh vegetables were eggs of the intestinal nematode Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) as well as non-STH and trematodes. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sanitation hygiene and contamination of non-STH worm eggs in fresh vegetables at food stalls in Semarang City. This type of research is an observational study with a cross sectional approach. Based on the results of laboratory tests, from a total of 165 samples examined, eggs of non-STH worms with species of Fasciola sp and Toxocara sp were found in 45 food stalls selling fresh vegetables. Based on bivariate analysis, there was no significant relationship between personal hygiene (p = 0.071) and environmental sanitation (p = 0.334) on contamination of non-STH worm eggs in fresh vegetables in food stalls in Pedurungan District, Semarang.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a contagious disease that must be watched out for because it causes high mortality rates in several countries around the world. Public knowledge, especially traders, about COVID-19 is important as an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which is increasingly widespread so that people are able to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle in their daily life. The aim of the research is to conduct a survey of public knowledge about COVID-19 with three indicators, namely knowledge of the disease COVID-19, knowledge of prevention of COVID-19, and knowledge of how to spread COVID-19 so that they can obtain an overview of public knowledge related to COVID-19. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study with cross sectional design in the community of traders in the Ganesha housing market, Semarang City. The number of samples was 33 people who were determined by total sampling technique. In this study, a questionnaire was used as a data collection tool, with data analyzed descriptively (univariate analysis) presented in the form of a frequency table. The results showed that in general the respondents' knowledge about COVID-19 was in the good category, namely 82%. The results of the knowledge survey from the three indicators were 82% knowledge of the COVID-19 disease followed by the category of how to prevent COVI-19 by 79% and the mode of transmission of COVID-19 which was 70%. It is hoped that there is still a need for continuous education to the community so that people's knowledge can be actualized in the attitudes and behavior of the local community, and as an effort to prevent COVID-19, the application of clean and healthy living habits (PHBS) in the community must be done by getting used to using hands with soap. or hand sanitizer after each activity, and implementing health protocols.

Abstract

Worm infections are one of health problem in developing countries. The most infected worm parasite is the Soil-Transmitted Helminth group. The worm infected disease is generally associated with socioeconomic factors as well as clean and healthy living behaviour. Humans can be infected after ingesting food contaminated by worm eggs for A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura or through skin penetration by hookworm infective larvae. The work type of brick making is closely related to STH infection because related to the soil as the main raw material of bricks. This study aims to determine the level of infection intensity, infection risk factors, and the main risk factors of STH infection in the brick maker in Central Java Province. This research is observational research using a cross-sectional design. The results of this study indicate that the degree of intensity of STH infection in brick maker in Central Java Province is categorized in mild infections with STH infecting worms, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Hookworm and mixed infection (Ascaris and Trichuris). Risk factors associated with STH infection in brick craftsmen in Central Java Province were knowledge of STH (OR: 4.7 in 95% CI 1.2 - 17.5; p = 0.022) and environmental Sanitation (OR: 7, 3 95% CI 1.9 - 27.5; p = 0.002). The main risk factor that has the most influence on STH infection in brick craftsman in Central Java Province is environmental sanitation (OR: 5,7 95% CI 1,5 - 22,0; p: 0,012).
