Abstract

Abstract: Mastering listening skill has been a great burden for intermediate to upper-intermediate students in Indonesian EFL context. The absence of real life exposures to native speakers of English strengthens student’s reluctance to frequently practice listening to English. Therefore, this paper will propose the listening logs applied in an extensive listening class to enhance student’s autonomy in improving their listening skill. The article will begin by highlighting some challenges faced by students in Listening class and some possible strategies to deal with them will be presented further. Later, relevant theories on extensive listening and learner autonomy will be discussed. Next, the author will introduce the listening logs followed by the procedures on how this is planned, implemented and evaluated. This paper offers an alternative for teachers to promote students’ in and out of class learning regarding their own pace and interest in extensive listening practice.

Abstract

Abstract. The crucial presence of instructional materials at English classes, especially English for Specific Purposes, has commonly been approved. ESP materials provide exposure to the genres needed by the students, including those at Islamic Education Department. It is, therefore, inevitable that the textbook meets some criteria for the success of the program. In this paper, the writers evaluated an ESP textbook institutionally prepared for students of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty at IAIN Tulungagung. The analysis in this qualitative descriptive research was based on Cunningsworth’s and Miekley’s checklists for textbook evaluation. The book was evaluated on the category of aims and approaches, design and organization, content, skills, topic, methodology, vocabulary and grammar, exercises and activities, attractiveness of the text and physical make up, context, and practical considerations. The results showed that almost all categories are marked as adequate. It is indicated that the textbook mainly focused on vocabulary enrichment. Some recommendations for textbook improvement and revision are given at the final part of this study, particularly those related to the challenge on the advanced of technology.Keywords. Abstract

To participate in global academia, expert and novice researchers are strongly encouraged to publish their academic papers in international journals. Hence, a remarkable ability to produce quality academic writing, which includes knowledge of linguistics features, is a necessity. This paper aimed at exploring lexicogrammatical properties focusing on grammatical intricacy and lexical density deployed within the introduction sections of research articles (RA) published in four international journals in the Asian region. The corpus of 40 introduction sections of RAs was analyzed based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics framework. The results of this study highlighted the structural complexity indicated by the use of paratactic and hypotactic clauses which led to lexically dense academic writing. Some pedagogical implications and recommendations related to the findings were discussed further in this article's final part. Abstract

In research articles published for international reputable journals, the crucial role of abstracts to attract readers, especially reviewers or editors, is not in doubt. The article is expected to not experience direct desk rejection due to non-impressive and persuasive lexical choices in the abstract for further reading. This paper proposes a corpus study to scrutinize ideational grammatical metaphor (IGM) from the abstracts of successfully published articles in four applied linguistic quality indexed Scopus journals (Q1 and Q2) managed by Asian countries. The data were analyzed based on Halliday’s SFL framework focused on the realization of IGM in nominalization and lexical density. The pattern of IGM examined was on the transference of process and quality nominalization through morphological derivations. The findings show that the shift from process to thing dominates the other with many variations of suffixes within the words. In addition, the abstracts’ lexical density results ranged from 45 to 72 percent. Thus, it is suggested that English teachers consider raising students’ awareness of nominalization to produce lexically dense but informative texts in their academic writing classes.
