Abstract

Understanding chemical concepts as a whole show that students can connect three levels of chemical representation. The three levels in chemical representation are related and reflected in students' mental models. A teacher must know the student's mental model as a reflection of learning. This research aims to develop an instrument for students' mental models on voltaic cell submaterials using the prediction-observation-explanation (TDM-POE) mental model diagnostic test. The method used in this research is the research and development method using the Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) development model. The instrument was validated by five validators consisting of four lecturers in the Department of Chemistry Education and one chemistry teacher at school. Validity is determined by content validity response. Then, the instrument was tested on class XII students who had received learning about voltaic cells. The instrument consists of four questions for four concepts: voltaic cell construction, calculating standard cell potential values, voltaic cells in alkaline batteries, and corrosion phenomena. Each question consists of 3 stages, namely, the first stage contains questions about predicting phenomena (predict), the second stage contains video or image observations (observe), and the third stage contains detailed explanations (explanation). The validation results show that the validity of the TDM-POE instrument obtained a score of 0.99, which is categorized as valid. So, the TDM-POE instrument can be used to understand chemical concepts.

Abstract

This training activity aims to improve the pedagogical competence and professional competence of junior high school science teachers in Bantul Regency in compiling teaching modules using the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) approach to equip PCK (Pedagogical Content Knowledge) for science teachers in Bantul Regency (MGMP) in implementing the independent curriculum. This activity was attended by 30 junior high school science teachers in Bantul Regency. Training activities were held offline on Wednesday 26 July 2023 at SMP N 1 Pleret. The preparation stage was carried out by coordinating with the Bantul Regency Middle School Science (MGMP) in determining the time and location of the training. The evaluation stage is carried out during the training process. Based on success indicators, this service program can be implemented well. Each science teacher actively participates in compiling teaching modules using a STEAM approach. The science teacher responded very well to the activity and provided suggestions for improving further training.

Abstract

In this modern era, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational context has brought significant benefits to teachers and students. One widely used artificial intelligence type is large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. This study aims to capture the current research trend related to the use of ChatGPT in the context of science education. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database to analyze current research trends on ChatGPT and Science Education. A total of 74 documents published in 2023-2025 were collected. Rstudio, OpenRefine, VOSviewers, and Microsoft Excel were utilized to analyze the data. It is perceived that Goethe University Frankfurt, National Cheng Kung University, Technical University of Munich, and University College London are the most productive affiliations, with eight publications over the timespan. Moreover, the USA is the leading country, with 51 publications, as one of the high-yielding countries. Citation analysis was carried out to define the most impactful author. It is known that Grant Cooper from Curtin University is the most impactful author. To sum up, this study contributes to presenting current research trends related to the use of ChatGPT in science education that might provide insightful information for future research.

Abstract

Besmart UNY is a platform developed by UNY to increase the intention to use information systems in learning. This study aims to (1) determine the effectiveness of using besmart e-learning for the ease of lectures for UNY Science Education students, (2) find out the advantages and disadvantages of using besmart e-learning in UNY Science Education student lectures, (3) how to overcome weaknesses or problems in the use of learning media through besmart. This research is a qualitative research with a survey research method. The subjects of this research were Science Education students at UNY undergraduate level in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 who were selected using a selection technique of 70 students. The results of this study are (1) besmart is effectively used in science education student lectures at UNY, (2) its advantages are facilitating the learning process, learning is more effective while its weaknesses are frequent errors, changes in appearance so that sometimes data or assignments that have been collected are lost, and difficult in looking for classes, (3) how to overcome weaknesses, namely improving the besmart system, adding and developing features.
