Abstract

Halal certification is a crucial component in the food and beverage industry, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within this sector. Certification influences the formulation and ingredients of food items, consequently enhancing customer awareness of products that adhere to food and halal standards. The Halal Information System (SIHALAL) is a platform intended to optimise the halal certification process for MSME food and beverage enterprises. MSME participants in the region continue to have challenges in accessing and inputting data into the SIHALAL portal. This community service program aims to enhance the comprehension of MSMEs in Panempan Village about the assistance offered by MSME stakeholders in the halal certification registration process via the SIHALAL application. The methodology used include interviews and direct observation, including multiple phases: issue identification, planning, and execution. This community service program resulted in support for halal certification and the identification of halal items to enhance MSMEs' awareness in Panempan Village on the significance of acquiring halal certificates in the food industry. Support services for NIB registration and halal certification use the SIHALAL application. Two MSMEs achieved halal certification with the SIHALAL application throughout the certification process.

Abstract

The ideology and socio-political viewpoints of writers significantly shape text and language products. Hence, students engaging in literacy tasks, such as reading and writing, should approach them with a critical mindset, considering various perspectives rather than accepting information uncritically. Critical literacy pedagogy addresses these requirements, aiming to cultivate critical literacy skills in students with the guidance of teachers, who themselves must possess critical thinking abilities and literacy. This study explores English teachers' perceptions and grasp of critical literacy pedagogy. Sixty teachers participated, responding to questionnaires comprising both closed and open-ended questions, alongside brief interviews. The data obtained, quantitative and qualitative, were analyzed through mathematical computations and coding techniques respectively, revealing teachers' positive attitudes toward critical literacy pedagogy. However, this enthusiasm wasn't consistently reflected in its implementation due to cultural beliefs and insufficient teacher knowledge. Consequently, the study recommends professional development opportunities for teachers to enhance their understanding and proficiency in incorporating critical literacy pedagogy, particularly within EFL contexts.

Abstract

In academic writing, cohesion plays a crucial role in creating clarity and flow. However, students often struggle to use cohesive devices effectively, which can impact the coherence of their writing. This study explores the use of grammatical cohesive devices in pros and cons essays written by students in the Marine Science study program to assess their effectiveness in conveying the writer’s intention. It aims to examine how these devices; references, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction are employed to convey the writers’ intended meaning. Moreover, this study also identifies the most frequently used types of grammatical cohesive devices. Using qualitative content analysis approach, the researchers analyzed 80 essays to identify the frequency and effectiveness of each cohesive device. The findings reveal that reference (62.50%) was the most frequently used device, followed by conjunction (34.38%), while substitution and ellipsis were rarely employed (1.56% each). These results indicate that students primarily rely on pronouns, pointer words, and conjunctions to link ideas and maintain the flow of their arguments. This study highlights the need for more structured instruction and additional support to help students improve their use of cohesive devices. The results also contribute to the development of cohesion theory, particularly in the context of student writing, and suggest future research directions. Further exploration of underutilized devices like substitution and ellipsis, as well as the use of cohesive devices in other text types, could enhance understanding of student writing and inform teaching strategies to promote stronger cohesion and clarity in student essays.

Abstract

Today’s education aims at creating lifelong learners. Therefore, education emphasizes creating independent students who can regulate their own learning. Through case study design, this present study was intended to seek in-depth information about teaching quality dimensions that promote self-regulated learning to the primary age students at one English learning community, Rita Home Library. The data was obtained through interviews and observation from both teachers and students. The data was analyzed by coding and theme analysis. The findings showed that setting challenging goal and task; engaging students in learning through metacognitive strategy; implementing clear rules and procedures; managing disciplinary and providing clear deadline; providing meaningful feedback; seeing mistake as a part of learning; being care and open to student’s need and emotion were found to be the predictors of teaching quality that were promoted by the teacher to the primary students at Rita Home Library.

Abstract

This study explores gender representation in Madurese folktales using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). By analyzing two selected folktales, The Origin of the Madurese People and Menak Sanaya, the research examines textual, discursive, and sociocultural dimensions to understand how gender roles are portrayed and their implications on societal perceptions. The findings reveal a recurring pattern of patriarchal ideologies where male characters are depicted as dominant, protective, and decision-makers. In contrast, female characters are relegated to subordinate roles, often portrayed as passive and reliant on male intervention. These representations reflect traditional Madurese societal values and contribute to the reinforcement of gender hierarchies. The study highlights how narratives serve as tools for intergenerational transmission of cultural norms, shaping collective consciousness and perpetuating gender stereotypes. Insights from this research emphasize the need for critical engagement with cultural narratives to foster discussions on gender equality.
