Abstract

The growing interest in Living Qur'an Studies (LQS) among scholars in Indonesia highlights its potential as a dynamic approach in Qur'anic studies. LQS emphasizes the interaction between Qur'anic teachings and lived experiences, integrating sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature, and interpretation studies. Despite its promise, applying LQS consistently in academic research remains challenging. This study evaluates the quality and implementation of LQS in publications from Islamic Religious Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in the Sulawesi region. Through constructivist analysis, which explores how knowledge is actively shaped within academic discourse, this research assesses trends, methodologies, and challenges affecting the sustainability of LQS research. The findings highlight three key outcomes: (1) a growing trend of LQS adoption across four PTKIN institutions, (2) inconsistencies in methodological application, and (3) structural and conceptual challenges hindering the continuity of LQS. This study offers practical recommendations to improve the quality of LQS research, encouraging better methodological alignment and broader impact. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to advance LQS as a relevant field that bridges Qur'anic studies with contemporary societal contexts.

Abstract

Christian Prince’s (CP) presence on YouTube opened a new chapter in Christian opposition actors who act as cross-theological debaters between Muslims and Christians who, for the previous two decades, were only dominated by Muslims. Through the narratives on YouTube, this Christian apologist tries to convince the public that the Qur’an contains contradictory statements as the holy book for Muslims. In response to such an issue, this research aims to investigate the construction of CP’s interpretation, which highlights the authenticity of the Qur’an. Qualitative content and thematic analyses and the framing approach developed by William A. Gamson were employed. Findings suggest that the representation of CP’s understanding of the Qur’an verses uses a decontextualization approach. Also, the vast knowledge of the Arabic language and literary translations further strengthen the narratives to convince the public of the allegations. However, instead of considering the historical context in understanding the scientific meaning of the Qur’an, this Christian apologist uses literal meaning as a framing device. This phenomenon has shown that cross-theological debates only provoke persistent inter-religious hatred and resentment. Therefore, such debates are inclined to trigger the propaganda of religious extremists.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether or not revivalism ideology exists among academics in Islamic higher education institutes in the province of Southeast Sulawesi. It is accomplished through the use of an exegetical reception approach of their understanding of the Āyāt at-Taḥkīm (Quran chapter al-Midah [5]:44-47). Data was gathered by combining survey technique development with in-depth interviews. The collected data was analyzed using a philosophical and phenomenological hermeneutic approach to assess the academic communitys understanding of Āyāt at-Taḥkīm. According to the survey results, Āyāt at-Taḥkīm is very popular among academics higher education institutes in Southeast Sulawesi. Most of the academic community’s information comes from religious studies on social media. They acknowledge and accept these verses as the foundation for the legitimacy of kaffah enforcement of Islamic law as the foundation for Indonesia’s political system. Meanwhile, the interviews show that most informants label those who disagree with the discourse with theological labels (kāfir and thāgūt). As a result, even though these characteristics have not reached an extreme level, their comprehension is included in the revivalism ideologys characteristics.
