Abstract

Abstract

Solar energy is a renewable energy source (EBT) that will never run out. One utilization of solar energy is as a source of solar-powered public street lighting (PJUTS). Public street lighting aims to assist the public when traveling and improve road safety at night. This research will focus on planning solar-powered public street lighting located in Sikeben Village, Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang Regency, which is a provincial road with a width of 5 meters and a length of 3950 meters. At night, several points on the road have minimal lighting, potentially increasing the risk of accidents and crime. Additionally, at some other points, lighting is already installed, but it still relies on the PLN (State Electricity Company) as the power source. The planning of solar-powered public street lighting (PJUTS) requires 158 lighting points with 24 Watt LED lamp loads. With a pole height of 7 meters and a distance of 25 meters between poles, the lighting intensity is calculated to be 6.72 lux manually. According to applicable standards, the value of illumination intensity is 3-7 lux. The solar modules used have a capacity of 75 Wp. PJUTS operates for 12 hours a day and can continue operating for 3 days without solar energy source. The total cost for this solar-powered public street lighting is Rp 1,224,500,000.

Abstract

The MG.07 Substation in Matang Gelumpang Dua is located in the PT. PLN (Persero) Customer Service Unit Matang Gelumpang Dua Area Bireun, supplied by the Bireun Main Substation with a feeder capacity of 280 A. The MG.07 feeder supplies transformer PSG.039, loaded at 103.4% of its 250 kVA capacity. The standard load for a transformer is 80% of its capacity. The solution to address this issue is to install an insert transformer to distribute the load from PSG.039. According to data from PT. PLN (Persero) Area Bireun in 2023, the annual increase in electricity usage in Matang Gelumpang Dua Bireun is 8.3%. Therefore, using a 250 kVA insert transformer with an initial loading percentage of 26.8%, it will be able to accommodate the increase in electricity usage for the next five years, with a total loading percentage after five years of 68.3%.

Abstract

Public street lighting plays an important role in enhancing safety and comfort in urban areas. However, the use of conventional energy for public street lighting significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. This research aims to study the optimization of solar energy usage in public street lighting systems to reduce urban emissions. The methods used include energy efficiency analysis, case studies of solar energy-based public street lighting implementation, and environmental impact evaluation. The results of the study show that the application of solar energy technology in public street lighting can increase energy efficiency by up to 30% and reduce CO2 emissions by 25% compared to conventional systems. In the case study of public street lighting in the city of Binjai, the reduction in carbon emissions reached 99.96%. Additionally, this study also identifies key factors affecting the success of implementation, such as technical design, initial costs, and government policy support. Therefore, optimizing solar energy-based public street lighting not only has the potential to reduce negative environmental impacts but also supports sustainable urban development.
