Abstract

Abstract— The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of variables, which were derived from the Fraud Pentagon framework, on earnings management. Beneish M-Score was used to measure earnings management, which serves as a proxy fraudulent financial reporting. The independent variables consist of financial target, financial stability, external pressure, personal financial need, nature of industry, effective monitoring, change in auditor, change in director, and CEO duality. One hundred and sixteen publicly traded manufacturing companies were examined for the period 2016-2018 (n=348). Our balanced dataset was analyzed using fixed-effects panel regression. Our investigation finds that financial target, external pressure, personal financial need, nature of industry, change in auditor, and CEO duality significantly affect fraudulent financial reporting. Meanwhile, financial stability, ineffective monitoring, and change in director do not significantly affect fraudulent financial reporting. Abstract

This paper attempts to investigate the effects of (i) corporate governance on accounting conservatism, and (ii) accounting conservatism on earnings management. The internal corporate governance mechanisms included were managerial ownership, institutional ownership, audit committee size, and number of independent commissioners. 119 publicly-traded manufacturing corporations were observed for a time period of 5 years (2012-2016, n=595). The data were analyzed using panel regression. This study finds that the number of commissioners negatively affects accounting conservatism, and that accounting conservatism negatively affects earnings management. It is found that the more conservative a firm reports its finances, the less likely the management would manage its earnings. Whereas other variables were found to be insignificant regressors of accounting conservatism.

Abstract

Tax avoidance is the lawful minimization of income tax by employing legal methods. This study aims to assess the effects of top management characteristics and capital structure on tax avoidance, measured with Effective Tax Rate (ETR). Our panel data comprise public manufacturing corporations, observed from 2010-2015 (n= 452). Based on our panel analysis using random effects model on EView, we find that tax avoidance: (i) is negatively influenced by independent directors (ii) is positively affected by foreign directors; (iii) is influenced by capital structure, measured with firm leverage, and (iv) positively affects current profitability, measured with Return on Equity. Meanwhile, the influence of female directors are found to be nonexistent. We also offer empirical evidence that board of directors’ characteristics influence tax avoidance through financing decisions. The findings of this study suggest that firm capital structure determination is motivated by the intention to avoid taxes. Abstract

Abstract

Kata kunci: intellectual capital, human capital, structural capital, relational capital, kinerja keuangan                                             AbstractThe purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of intellectual capital on financial performance, which was measured with the return on assets. The components of intellectual capital follow the Modified Value-Added Intellectual Component (MVAIC) model, which consists of Human Capital, Structural Capital, Relational Capital, and Capital Employed. This study uses a sample of fifty-nine publicly listed Indonesian manufacturing companies, which were examined for the period of 2015 – 2018 (n=236). The dataset was analyzed using fixed effect panel regression on Eviews econometrics package. Based on our regression, we find that human capital, structural capital, and capital employed positively impact financial performance. Meanwhile relational capital does not significantly influence financial performance. Keywords: intellectual capital, human capital, structural capital, relational capital, financial performance

Abstract

The paper examinse whether Indonesian corporations manage their earnings through real activities and accrual accounting during their initial public offerings. We also investigate the effect of this IPO earnings management on earnings persistence in the subsequent period. Seventy-three non-financial IPOs during 2014-2017 were taken as research sample. Afer a series of statistical analyses, we find that companies that went public committed both real and accrual earnings management to inflate income figures in their IPO year. Furthermore, we also find that accrual earnings management negatively affects earning persistence, whereas real earnings management positively affects earnings persistence. Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the herding behavior of the companies that invested in IDX LQ45 Index during 2014 through 2016. Herd behavior is the tendency of investors to follow other investors’ actions in the market. LQ45 was chosen as it comprises the most heavily-traded stocks of the Indonesian Stock Exchange. This research used Vector Autoregressive model to determine the effects of size and market return on the herding behavior. The Granger causality test suggests that there are dynamic interactions: (i) between size and herding behavior; and (ii) between market return and herding behavior. In addition, Variance Decomposition and Impulse Response reveal that market capitalization (size) has variable of the greater role in defining herding behavior, compared to that of market return.
