Abstract

This article aims to reveal the exclusion and inclusion strategies and the differences in the use of reporting strategies onthe news of the Al-Syifa Hospital attack on Republika, Aljazeera, and BBC News online media using Van Luwen's critical discourse analysis theory. The type of research used is a qualitative method. Data sources are taken from Republika online news media entitled Pasukan Israel Kepung 3 Rumah Sakit di Gaza dan Mengebom kembali RS Al-Shifa, Aljazeera net entitled Al-Jazirah Nit Tarshadu Awdhaa'uhu, Hakadza Yabdu al-Mustasyfa al-Indunisiya bi Gazzah tahta al-Qashfi, and BBC News entitled “Israeli Militarry Looking into Reports of Gaza Hospital Blast”. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques, namely data presentation, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the news strategy used on Republika online media is an exclusion strategy with passivization and nominalization, and an inclusion strategy with differentiation, abstraction, nomination categorization, and nomination identification. Aljazeera uses exclusion strategies with passivization and nominalization techniques, as well as inclusion strategies with abstraction, nomination categorization and dissociation techniques. BBC News only uses exclusionary strategies with, passivization nominalization, and clause replacement techniques. The use of news strategies on Republika and Aljazeera media contrasts sharply with the use of strategies in the BBC News media, which only uses exclusion strategy. The use of these strategies shows that Republika and Aljazeera online media support Palestine, while BBC News online media support Israel.

Abstract

This research aims to provide information related to Indonesia's norms, identity and response to the Myanmar conflict. The discussion will focus on the causes and role of Indonesia. Indonesia has an interest in this conflict, apart from the 1945 Constitution in maintaining world peace, the issue of this conflict is also within the Southeast Asian region which if not resolved quickly will affect regional security. The problem of Rohingya refugees in surrounding countries will become a new problem for the region, including Indonesia. The number of Rohingyas killed and displaced due to this conflict until 2019 has always shown a significant increase. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research model approach based on constructivism theory in analyzing problems empirically. . This theory emphasizes that state identity is shaped by values and norms that exist in structural (international norms) and subsystemic (local norms) areas.  The qualitative approach used in this research is a type of literature study whose data sources are analyzed from books and journals related to research on the Indonesian government's diplomacy efforts in mediating humanitarian conflicts in Myanmar. The findings of this study indicate that Indonesia through its diplomatic relations will not remain silent to see this conflict drag on.Keywords: Indonesian Response, Myanmar Conflict, Constructivism, Diplomacy

Abstract

Defamiliarization is the study of how the literary work becomes strange and foreign, differs from the others. This qualitative descriptive study uses Victor Shklovsky’s Defamiliarization theory to see the opposition characters created by Najib Mahfudz in Awal dan Ahir. The result of this study is that Najib Mahfudz creates unique characters such as Nafisah, a mother who was abandoned by her husband in the face of social and economic situations with her four children after the revolution in Egypt. The protagonist characters such as Samirah, Hasanain, Husain, Nafisah, Bahia and Farid Affandy, represent the typical characters created by Mahfudz along with his social and psychological situations. Likewise, the Antagonist characters are so uniquely created by Mahfudz. The social situation, political economy and psychology of Egyptian society also colour the distinctive characters of the story. The characters created by Najib Mahfudz both from the antagonist and the protagonist are very interesting structurally, the characters built by both protagonist and antagonist are not directly related but meet in other forms of social relationships, which is different from other novels in terms of generally. Najib Mahfudz seems very good at making different characters so that it appears that these characters come to life in front of the reader.

Abstract

Caricatures are not merely visual humor but function as powerful instruments of socio-political critique. This study analyzes three caricatures by Osama Hajjaj that depict the condition of Syria following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Guided by Roman Jakobson’s semiotic framework, the analysis applies six language functions: addresser, addressee, message, context, code, and contact to explore the layered meanings embedded in Hajjaj’s works. Jakobson’s model is relevant for visual texts because its communicative functions operate through both verbal and non-verbal signs, allowing caricatures to be interpreted as structured messages. A qualitative approach was employed, with primary data obtained from caricatures published on Hajjaj’s Instagram account and secondary data drawn from scholarly literature and credible news reports. The results demonstrate that Hajjaj’s caricatures transcend mere satire of Assad’s leadership; they articulate broader grievances regarding foreign intervention, systemic repression, and the uncertainties surrounding political transition. Furthermore, the visual narratives reveal how caricatures can simultaneously criticize power structures and express collective resistance. This research contributes to the field of semiotics by expanding Jakobson’s framework into the analysis of political caricatures and provides new insights into visual communication in Middle Eastern contexts. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on Syrian-themed caricatures, a topic rarely examined in previous research, and in its analysis of the interaction among Jakobson’s functions to reveal the ideological dimensions within Hajjaj’s works.
