Abstract

Frenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove or eliminate the frenulum, either the labial, buccal, or lingual frenulum. An abnormality of the thickened and tight lingual frenulum of the tongue that results in limitation of tongue movement is called ankyloglossia. This limitation can causes speech problems. A 25-year-old woman with tongue problems, immobility and difficulty in pronouncing certain letters. The tongue cannot cross the vermilion lip line. The choice of surgical treatment is frenectomy under local anesthesia using the dual hemostat method. Frenectomy as a treatment option for ankyloglossia gave good results without complications and was continued with speech therapy rehabilitation.

Abstract

The role of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria can lead to the occurrence of aggressive periodontitis. The bacterium infects periodontal tissue with its virulence factor. Antibacterial administration such as chlorhexidine mouthwash is one of the treatments for periodontal disease due to bacteria. Long-term use of chlorhexidine can cause irritation of the oral mucosa, burning sensation, changes in taste perception and the appearance of stains on the teeth. One alternative is to gargle the guava leaf extract water. The antibacterial effect of guava leaf extract is obtained from its chemical compounds, namely flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, ethanol and tannins. This research aims to know the potential of water guava leaf extract (Syzygium aqueum) in inhibiting the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria.  A literature review by reviewing research articles from Science Direct and Google Scholar using the keywords "Syzygium aqueum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans".   Guava leaves contain many derivatives of compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. The content of these compounds can be used as antibacterial because they are effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria.  Water guava leaf extract (Syzygium aqueum) can inhibit the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria.

Abstract

Triterpenoids are compounds with highly diverse chemical structures and exhibit interesting biological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. The matoa plant (Pometia pinnata), belonging to the genus Pometia from the family Sapindaceae, has been used in traditional medicine and shows potential as an antibacterial agent. The purpose of this research was to isolate and determine the chemical structure of triterpenoids from the peel of the matoa fruit (P. pinnata) and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The ethyl acetate extract from the peel of P. pinnata demonstrated significant antibacterial activity. In this study, a triterpenoid compound was identified, and its chemical structure was determined using spectroscopic methods, including UV, IR, MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 2D-NMR, as well as by comparing data from the literature. The compound was identified as a cycloartane-type triterpenoid known as 24-methylenecycloartanol. The compound was then tested for antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The test results showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 500 μg/mL for both bacteria, which was categorized as very weak

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is an inflammation of the periodontal tissue characterized by loss of attachment and gingival enlargement. Periodontal diseases such as periodontitis that cannot be treated with non-surgical therapy, surgical therapy is performed, namely curettage which aims to eliminate bacteria and gingivectomy helps visibility and accessibility so that it will reduce periodontal inflammation. Case: A 21-year-old female patient came to RSGM UNIMUS with complaints of enlarged gingiva on the upper and lower front teeth and redness on the upper left back teeth, since 1 year ago, clinically there was gingival enlargement on teeth 12,21,31,32,42,43 and redness accompanied by periodontal pockets on the mesial and distal parts of teeth 26,27. Case Treatment: The treatment procedure carried out in the initial phase was scaling, then after control it was continued with periodontal surgery, namely curettage and gingivectomy because the results of the evaluation of pocket depth and gingival enlargement did not decrease. Discussions: The results of treatment after two weeks after scaling have not changed, after two weeks after periodontal surgery showed good condition with mild complaints. Conclusion and Suggestions: Gingivectomy and curettage treatment can quickly reduce periodontal inflammation.

Abstract

Gingival enlargement can occur due to many factors, ranging from systemically caused plaque to hormonal disorders, due to medications, orthodontic treatments and genetic diseases. This case report aims to describe the management of gingival enlargement using conventional gingivectomy. A 35-year-old male patient came to the hospital with complaints of rounded gums of the upper jaw. The patient reported no pain in his gums. One month after scaling and root planing, the patient underwent a gingivectomy on tooth 12. Evaluation three weeks after the procedure revealed no inflammation, reduction in enlargement, and improved oral hygiene. The determination of etiological factors is crucial in determining the appropriate actions for managing gingival enlargement. Gingivectomy is a procedure to eliminate gingival enlargement and make it easier for patients to maintain oral hygiene. To prevent recurrence in the future, patients need supportive periodontal therapy, which they should undergo regularly DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v5n2.p141-150
